 In 1972 a seven-year-old boy named Steven Stayner was abducted while he walked home from school in Merced, CA. His case drug on and went unsolved for so long, most people gave up any hope that Steven would ever be found alive. In 1980 Steven Stayner was found...alive. For over seven years-from age seven to the fourteen-the boy had been held captive by a child predator named Kenneth Parnell. You're probably asking yourself, Merced is over 150 miles from Bakersfield...almost a three-hour drive...why is this a Notorious Bakersfield story. This is the Bakersfield connection to that story.

We got a wild one today. Today's Suck is really three Sucks in one. There is the abduction of Steven Stayner, the backstory of a notorious pedophile, Kenneth Parnell, and the story of serial killer, Cary Stayner aka the Yosemite Killer. In late 1972, Steven was abducted on the way home from school, at the age of seven, and he wouldn't see his family for another seven years. And that entire seven years, he'd be assaulted by Parnell. And then, after escaping, he'd move back into the room he shared with his older brother, Cary. And years later, Cary Stayner would become a serial killer in Yosemite Park, where the Stayner kids often vacationed. A lot of moving parts in this story, and I think they all come together to form a compelling tale that also involves Bigfoot. Seriously.

Steven Stayner was just 7 years old when he was abducted on December 4th, 1972. He spent the next 7 years living with a vile paedophile named Kenneth Parnell. Parnell, kept Steven for these years, moving around California, enrolling Steven into various schools under the name of Dennis Parnell.
Parnell struggled to hold down a stable job, kept on the move and abusing Steven. He made several attempts with Steven to abduct other children, only to have them fail every time. Recruiting another person to abduct a child, Parnell abducted 5 year-old, Timothy White, in 1980.
Steven, being determined to spare Timothy the same fate he had endured, escaped with him in the middle of the night. They went to a police station and explained their stories.
Kenneth Parnell was arrested the next morning.
Steven, once returned to his grateful parents and family, had a hard time readjusting to his new life.

The Story Of The Years-Long Abduction Of Steven Stayner And The Crimes Of His Serial Killer Brother Cary Stayner

In 1972, 7 year old Steven Stayner was abducted by Kenneth Parnell and held captive for more than 7 years, passing him off as his son.  When he was getting too old for Parnell’s taste, he abducted 5 year old Timothy White.  But Steven was not about to let Timothy suffer the same fate as he had, so he took Timothy and escaped.  Both boys made their way home, and Steven was hailed a hero.  But life wasn’t easy for Steven, trying to fit back into his family after so much time.  And as it would turn out, the most resentful of in the wake of Steven’s return was his own brother Cary.  Years later, Cary would embark on a violent journey, in some kind of twisted way to link himself to crimes more infamous than the one his brother was a victim of.  WARNING:  This episode contains details of child sexual abuse, sexual assault, rape, violent deaths, with many graphic details that may not be suitable for all listeners.  Listener discretion is advised.
