Recentering Black Horror: A Panel Discussion

Recentering Black Horror: A Panel Discussion

Audra Russell speaks with horror authors Sylvester Barzey, Michelle Lane & Steven Van Patten.

There's a misconception that Black horror authors only recently came on the scene after Jordan Peele's debut horror film. But Black people have been on the horror scene along.

We have a great time discussing Black authors in the horror space, expectations for the future, diversity in horror, and making stories believable (because we all know Black folks ain't going to investigate not one sound out in anybody's darkness LOL!).

A truly thought-provoking, honest, and funny conversation about Black horror.

    The Laughing Black Vampire

    The Laughing Black Vampire

Audra Russell chats with award-winning author Steven Van Patten.

Brooklyn native Steven Van Patten is the author of the critically acclaimed Brookwater’s Curse trilogy, about an 1860s Georgia plantation slave who becomes law enforcement within the vampire community.

Steven's short fiction includes contributions to nearly a dozen horror anthologies, including the Stoker Award nominated New York State of Fright. A collection of short horror and dark fiction stories entitled Hell At The Way Station, published by his company Laughing Black Vampire Productions and co-authored by celebrated storyteller, Marc Abbott, hit shelves in 2018.

Steven and I had a great time talking about his book, Brookwater's Curse, revealed some behind-the-scenes info about how he did his research and discussed the importance of Black writers and characters in the horror genre.

So grab your favorite beverage, sit back, and enjoy!
