Inspired by John Law: The End of Banking

Inspired by John Law: The End of Banking

John Law was perhaps the only economist who could actually put his theories into practice. With dubious success; the bubble he created in 18th century France, in part with the help of his Mississippi Company, burst spectacularly. Jürg Müller, Senior Fellow and Head of Research “Infrastructure & Markets” at the think tank Avenir Suisse, is nevertheless fascinated by the mathematical talent and analytical skills of the Scotsman, who notably also succeeded as a gambler and made it into the highest political circles as a convicted murderer.

Jürg Müller explains to host Hannah Wise how John Law turned debt into money and how this principle still shapes the financial world today. As co-author of the book The End of Banking, he has extensively studied the “wiring” of the banking world and developed a proposal on how future crashes could be prevented.

    Market Systems: Finance vs Manufacturing

    Market Systems: Finance vs Manufacturing

Today's episode is all about the pricing and bidding system used in the precast concrete restroom industry. Since I come from a quantitative finance background I also cover open vs closed auctions where I briefly discuss the stock exchange in comparison to dark pools. The precast concrete restroom industry is closest to dark pools however there are only bids placed with no ask. You end up with one customer requesting bids based on product and project specifications.

Most small manufactures and specifically precast companies use cost plus. Cost plus is the easiest way to price however it is very inefficient. It's just the product cost to manufacture plus a margin and there is typically a set margin. The high freight costs in precast prevent competition however in the restroom business they have been able to add enough value to the product to make it feasible to ship all over the country including Hawaii.

While I was working in the restroom business we set up automation to get the base costs more quickly and efficiently and then went above and beyond by building models for supply and demand using wins and losses from past bids.

Inspired by Albert Einstein: The Need for Trust

Inspired by Albert Einstein: The Need for Trust

In a way, Albert Einstein could see into the future. That fascinated Sita Mazumder even before she started kindergarten. For the Swiss IT economist and entrepreneur, he still embodies the ability to leave the beaten path. As a professor of business and IT at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Sita Mazumder conducts research on artificial intelligence at the interface of business and society and develops sustainable business models for the digital age.

She explains to host Hannah Wise what “digital” means for the old economy in particular. She emphasizes openness to FinTechs – and the importance of trust. Today’s technology-based customer journeys are based on trust more than ever. Cryptocurrencies are a case in point. Is this an opportunity for trustworthy companies like SIX?

022 - Stonks, Elon Musk, Gamestop, Doge, tech journalism and... metal! with Alex Wilhelm (TechCrunch)

022 - Stonks, Elon Musk, Gamestop, Doge, tech journalism and... metal! with Alex Wilhelm (TechCrunch)

The last few weeks have been crazy on the stock market, or should we say "stonks" market? The WallStreetBets movement against hedge funds, making GameStop skyrocket to an unthinkable price per share, made the front pages of all the newspapers and media outlets around the world. That caused a huge uproar and most trading platforms stopped trading on certain stock to avoid these so-called "unregulated" trades from "altering the market", which, in turn, caused WSB people to turn against the trading platforms, too.

If that weren't enough, politicians and highly-influential people added fuel to the flames, allowing the battle to rage on even longer.

Amidst all of this, Elon Musk is having the time of his life, trolling everyone, adopting the meme culture, proving he's embodying the current zeitgeist and riding the wave of this controversy like no one else is doing. By the end of it, he will have gained thousands, if not millions, of adepts of his cult.

In this episode, we talk to the man, the myth, the legend, Alex Wilhelm (Senior Editor at TechCrunch) and our friend Josh Feldberg about what happened a couple of weeks ago, and try to shed some light on it all.

We talked about the role of tech journalism in all this nonsense, but we also talk about clickbait, the madness of the crowds, memes, the mixing of politics and economy, stonks and not as much as we wanted, but also talk about metal towards the end of the episode.

Join us in an episode with the guest with the best radio voice we've ever had, a lot of profanity and unfiltered and highly blunt opinions on this and that.

Inspired by Margarete Steiff: The Will to Make It Happen

Inspired by Margarete Steiff: The Will to Make It Happen

Who isn’t familiar with the button in the ear of teddy bears and other cuddly plush animals? Margarete Steiff founded a stuffed-animal company known the world over. For a girl born in the mid-19th century, such a career was anything but predestined, all the more so since she was diagnosed with polio in her infancy. But her disability never deterred her from fighting for her education and achieving true mastery as a seamstress.

Andrea Weidemann, the director of the Swiss Finance Museum in the SIX headquarters building, has a flair for entrepreneurial stories like these. She describes to host Hannah Wise how she brings historical securities to life in the first and only finance museum in Switzerland – a country known for its banks – and explains why financial literacy is so important.

Inspired by Jeff Bezos: The Power of Risk

Inspired by Jeff Bezos: The Power of Risk

Jeff Bezos has repeatedly succeeded in branching out into adjacent sectors. The online bookseller Amazon was transformed into a media store, and from that into a marketplace for everything imaginable and later even into a supplier of cloud hosting services. Amazon accomplished that by constantly building on what it already had in place.

The Financial Information business at SIX is in a similar position. Sam Sundera, the Head Future Business in the respective business unit tells host Hannah Wise where SIX, too, has opportunities to make inroads into adjacent sectors, and it, too, can build on its achievements – with  ESG data or historical corporate actions data in the cloud, for example.

Inspired by Johan Cruyff: The Way to Play

Inspired by Johan Cruyff: The Way to Play

Aspects of the way Johan Cruyff played and coached are still visible today on many club and national soccer teams. He was a technically gifted player who did things with his feet that nobody else could. But what really set him apart was his understanding of teamwork and his leadership skills.

His abilities found expression in his conceptualization of “total football”, a system under which any outfield player can adopt the role of any other player. Under this philosophy, defenders, for example, also take over as attackers. SIX CEO Jos Dijsselhof tells host Hannah Wise how he internalized this type of culture in which collaboration is more important than individual talent and how it is lived at SIX.

Jerry Bowyer: NASDAQ Has Gone Woke

Jerry Bowyer: NASDAQ Has Gone Woke

The NASDAQ has gone woke. The stock exchange where investors can trade shares of mostly tech companies has put forward a set of rules that—if approved—will put arbitrary identity politics quotas on all the companies traded on their platform.

Those quotas could include having two board members who “self-identify” as women or as LGBT … or as part of an “underrepresented minority.”

The truth is no minority is more underrepresented in big tech than conservatives. Woke capital is obsessed with sexual and racial minorities. But not viewpoints minorities such as conservatives. Actual diversity does not matter to them. Identity politics comes first, always.

In addition to being a stock exchange, NASDAQ is also a publicly-traded company itself. That means that it, too, is beholden to its shareholders. Maybe it’s time for those shareholders to get involved and demand an explanation for a decision which will likely drive customers to the competition.

#42. Investment strategies evolve, but is your portfolio stuck in a foregone era?

In this episode, Trishul and Aaron discuss how investing has evolved over the years. From the notion of partial ownership as an investment to the first stocks, stock exchanges, and stockbrokers to the mutual funds and ETFs of today. They consider how incentives influence behavior and how, in the past, fee structures may have influenced investment professionals to the detriment of the investor. Diversification and asset allocation are paramount when investing, so how do mutual fund and ETF securities help with all this? When looking at managed and pooled investments, what components are vital, and which aspects are just fancy marketing techniques at play?

NEW YORK CITY: Babylon the Great. Permanent decline. Gun violence. Pit.

I’ve been preaching … about Babylon the Great, one of the great images from Revelation. Is it an image of New York? Let’s talk about it. (Bible condemns sin, warns of consequences)

I’ve been reading … New York’s in a decline that may never reverse itself. Exactly how surprising is that, from a Biblical perspective? (Nothing is forever)

I’ve been hearing … a man was shot and killed at a memorial to gun victims. Really. (bad people do evil b/c they can)

I’ve been playing … Pit. The chaos of the stock exchange might make for an exciting afternoon, but it’s no way to live your life. (pray for peace)
