    Black and Asian Solidarity (March!)

    Black and Asian Solidarity (March!)

What does Black and Asian solidarity look like during this time when “Black Lives Matter” and “Stop Asian Hate” are household terms? I talk with dancer, writer, and organizer Rohan Zhou-Lee about one vision of Black and Asian solidarity through community building in the Blasian March, a product of their purposeful organizing across different identity groups. We share our thoughts and experiences, and criticize various aspects of white mythology. In doing so we discuss language as an extension of colonization and tool of resistance, inspiration for creative thinking, ways to cultivate safety, and individualized solutions vs communal and structural solutions. Follow Rohan’s amazing work on their IG, twitter, and FB @diaryofafirebird and @blasianmarch.

Robin Chan: The GOAT | Angel Investor, Climate Change, Venture Capital, Uber, Twitter

Robin Chan: The GOAT | Angel Investor, Climate Change, Venture Capital, Uber, Twitter

Robin Chan is a serial entrepreneur, angel investor, and one of my best friends. Last year, we co-founded Goat Capital, a $50 million seed fund. He has been an early investor in some of the biggest companies around the world from Silicon Valley to China, including Uber, Square, Twitter and XiaoMi.

Robin is someone I really admire beyond his business acumen and success. In this conversation, we talk about when we first met while I was still working on Justin.TV, investing in climate change, and meeting Jack Dorsey for the first time. We discuss learning to put yourself in uncomfortable situations, becoming a student of the world, and constantly asking questions. One thing I’ve learned from Robin is the importance of creating an environment focused on giving to others, with no expectations attached. You’ll learn to focus on building meaningful relationships instead of transactional connections.

You can find Robin on Twitter and Linkedin.

Odunayo Eweniyi: Breaking Barriers | Nigeria, Women in FinTech, Challenging Expectations, Forbes Africa 30 Under 30

Odunayo Eweniyi is an inspiring and refreshing ambassador for female founders around the world, and I’m very excited to bring you her story. The co-founder and COO of Piggy Vest is a Nigerian business executive and activist. Her accomplishments have earned her recognition in Forbes Africa's list of 20 New Wealth Creators in Africa 2019, Bloomberg 50 2020, and Time 100.

Beyond her accolades, Odunayo’s entrepreneurial journey was born out of determination and bravery to make a positive change for the world. As we explore her entrepreneurial path, you’ll learn the importance of not internalizing failure, projecting calmness in the face of stress, accepting imperfection, and the strength of patience. She is a reminder to the world that you don’t need to be a ‘tech bro’ from Silicon Valley to be a successful founder – you just need the right vision, unflinching determination, and a strong heart.

    Ep 7 - Christopher Wright

    Ep 7 - Christopher Wright
An amazingly insightful podcast and one of our best yet! This week we introduce our friend Christopher Wright to the podcast. A teacher and student simultaneously who teaches Elementary school level children and is going for his Master's Degree. Chris grew up in Los Angeles but was brought up in mostly predominantly white schools in his early childhood, so we discuss how that's molded him and his outlook on life. There's some deep discussion about the concept of "School to Prison Pipelines" and how education in America is systematically divided by race and ethnicity and how it effects the Prison system in turn. The idea that if you're fighting for any human rights, that you should be fighting for all human rights, and the concept of "picking and choosing" is irresponsible and false cries for change. Conversation about the recent Red Table Talk about Asian and African American unity and how that would be beneficial to America. The idea that pinning minorities against each other as being the "bread and butter" that White America has thrived on since it's founding fathers formed this country. Asking the question of why White people tend to defend and get angry when discussing that history and systematic oppression, or even start to cry, rather than have a conversation about American History and what we can do to change the system? Also as to how and why White American's think it's logical to tell people of color to "go back home" when getting in arguments? Indigenous people are the only ones that didn't immigrate.... There's some discussion about Blacksploitation and Kung Fu films and while they were great representation in the media for people of color who had no representation at the time, it also set them up for stereotypes that White Americans cling to and still don't understand. Also about the Colorism (Racism within your own race) that happens and how it's detrimental to equal rights everywhere. Give it a listen as there's a lot of great conversation happening!!

Welcome to Progressive Opinions of Color (POC), a podcast that creates space for people of color in conversations about economics, politics, and culture. Your hosts are Nancy Wu and Sonya Natarajan. Nancy is an Asian American woman, an economist, and a huge politics and policy nerd. Nancy triple majored in Economics, Government (Political Science) and Gender Studies at Dartmouth and has a Master’s in Development Economics from Oxford. She works as an Economist full time and has previously worked in economic policy at the White House (under Obama, of course) and progressive think tanks. Sonya is an Indian American woman living in NYC. Sonya studied Economics and Math at NYU, and started her professional career working in economic consulting (where she and Nancy first met!). She then took a personal sabbatical to travel in Europe, spending the majority of her time in Madrid. She now works full-time as a strategy consultant, and part-time as an avid content consumer. She is passionate about politics, social justice, pop culture,  holistic wellness, and embracing diversity and progressive thinking in all of these spaces.

The goal of this podcast is to engage the state of the economy, and other pressing topics in politics, economics, and culture, all through perspectives inclusive of the lived experiences of people of color. Whether you're new to politics or already a huge politics nerd, we hope this podcast inspires community and conversation among us. Join us in reimagining politics and economics with underrepresented voices.
