Hoop Heads | Kent State | Mike Klinzing | Stories from the Starters

Mike Klinzing is the Founder and Executive Director of Head Start Basketball.  He is a Licensed USA Basketball Youth Development Coach and a Positive Coaching Alliance Certified Trainer. Mike loves the game of basketball and he always has.  When you hear stories about the kid who was always playing basketball in the dark, in the snow, in the living room, that was Mike.  He kept a journal of all his practice sessions when he was a young player and pushed himself to excel at the game. Mike understands young players and is a great teacher of the game.  Mike believes young players will have more fun when they can play the game well and play it the right way. Oh, his side gig is Host of The Hoop Heads Podcast which covers a wide range of basketball topics relevant to coaches, players, and parents.  Listen in for interviews with personalities from across the basketball landscape.  Their line-up of podcast guests includes some of the top minds in the game across all levels, from grassroots to the NBA.

Paul Shirley : Paul talks about his novel Ball Boy, Iowa State, The Phoenix Suns, and His One Shining Moment | 19Nine Podcast

Paul Shirley : Paul talks about his novel Ball Boy, Iowa State, The Phoenix Suns, and His One Shining Moment | 19Nine Podcast

Today’s podcast is part of our ongoing series Tales from the Bench and even though our guest Paul Shirley later started for Iowa State and went on to play overseas and in the NBA I first heard about him from his writing which he did from the Phoenix Suns Bench. His first novel Ball Boy is coming out or may already be out by the time you listen to this. I ordered my copy on Amazon and you should do the same. It is a bit like a reverse Karate Kid and tells a story that has Paul's sense of humor and command for the written word. He also has other books and a Podcast called Stories I Tell on Dates. Oh yeah, you can also get yourself outfitted in Retro Cyclones gear. If you’re new to the Podcast leave us a rating and review on your favorite podcast platform and if you really enjoy it send a link to the show to a friend.

Stories from the Starters (The Chucker interviews former WCC POY Casey Calvary)

Stories from the Starters (The Chucker interviews former WCC POY Casey Calvary)

     Guest: Casey Calvary

    https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/casey-calvary-1.html

    Host(s): The Chucker

    • Around the turn of the century, Casey teamed with the likes of Richie Frahm, Matt Santangelo, and Dan Dickau in leading the Zags to three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances. That streak continues today, as Gonzaga has made 21 straight trips to the Big Dance, a mark only bested by Kansas, Duke, and fellow 19nine school Michigan State.

    • Casey was the 2001 West Coast Conference Player of the Year and followed that up with a professional career in Japan, France, Australia, and Spain.

    • 19nine excited to have Casey here to reflect on that run and Gonzaga’s ascent as a premier college basketball program.

    • Take The Kennel, your home court, off the table. What’s the coolest gym you played in?

    • Team you least enjoyed playing?

    • Team you took great pride in beating?

    • Most impressive opponent? (a specific player who impressed)

    • Most overhyped guy you played against?

    • Guy you’re most surprised didn’t carve out a more successful professional career?

    • One Gonzaga teammate described you as a mellow dude off the court, but a guy who would run through his own mother to get a rebound. How accurate is that assessment?

    • Coach Izzo at Michigan State plays the accordion. What’s something people would be surprised to know about Coach Few?

    • At 19nine, we recently released the Gonzaga’s 1999 shorts as well as the Zags’ 2001 joints. Which did you prefer?
