    Raven L. Veal, PhD

How do you define yourself? It's a question a lot of us will wrestle with at some point in life, and according to Raven L. Veal, PhD, understanding the answer to this is a critical part of design. She speaks from experience, too -- as both a design lecturer and a strategic design lead, she definitely did not get to this level of success without understanding her truth at a deep level.

We started off with a brief introduction about her work at Citi Ventures, and then explored her lecture work at the University of Texas and what she learns from her students. Raven also talked about her mom as her source of creative inspiration, and shared her thoughts on design research, future tech, the role of art, moral imagination, and spirituality in designing technology. Trailblazers like Raven definitely let me know that we're in good hands for the future!

S10.E6. Gilbert Cockton. Wild Challenges, Not Wicked Problems.

Have you ever considered how being human-centered might not be a good idea? How any centricity is a wrong focus for design? With Gilbert Cockton, a professor emeritus from the Northumbria University and the University of Sunderland, we discuss the need for a big picture to be able to strategically move forward with any project. We talk about the design approach in the era of post-humanism, the agency of objects, and a fetish of rationality creeping into the design profession. We underline the importance of the studio culture with design critics as a way to keep on bringing good work to the world. And we wonder whether evaluation does a good job for forwarding motion or perhaps not really.

    Cultural Forces with Grant McCracken

    Cultural Forces with Grant McCracken

Part 2 of Lee Sankey's conversation with anthropologist, strategist and author Grant McCracken. They discuss the potential impacts of COVID viewed through  anthropological and cultural lenses on things like the family, the city and the world of work. Grant also flags some left-field signals that he is tracking, such as competitive charcuterie boards and talks about his latest work on the artisan movement which he describes as having matured into a transformative force.

Grant is a pioneer in culture as a strategic and driving force in business success. Not organisational or corporate culture but "big C" culture. He has taught at MIT and Harvard and consulted with companies such as Nike, Netflix, Oprah and the White House. Here he explains why culture matters to business, discusses barriers to the broader adoption of culture as a strategic input since writing his book "Chief Culture Officer" in 2009 and some of the things we can start doing to incorporate culture in our thinking.

Talking Freelance with Jessica Hische, Lettering Artist and Author

Talking Freelance with Jessica Hische, Lettering Artist and Author

This week, Jessica (@jessicahische), lettering artist, author, and professional procrastiworker, talks about knowing when your freelance job is your full-time job. We get in the weeds with artist reps and making connections to people at places that want to hire you and, more importantly, work that people know how to hire for in the future. In the end, we agree to not worry about having your shit together in five years; it’s not a race to the top.

S1.E10. Aga Szóstek & Werner Puchert. OUTRO: Stepping Into The World of Transformational Design.

In the world of transformational design, we create the narratives which define how we live our lives. The role of design is to enable the positive change to happen. To facilitate and to coach it. But ultimately the work needs to be done by the users. By each of us. The role of business and design is to responsibly accommodate us once we are ready to take the first steps. To leap. To become an artist.

S1.E1. Aga Szóstek & Werner Puchert. INTRO: What’s Next For Design?

We find ourselves in a world bogged down in technology. It needs to change, we believe this change is inevitable. In fact, It is already happening under our noses and Design will be in the thick of it. We kick off with our podcast wondering: what is next for Design? Is the Experience Economy already here? Or did the world take another turn? What is the meaning of positive psychology, searching for happiness and addressing deep human needs? Will this become a discussion point in the boardroom? Will it ever?
