Easy Tips to Boost Student Participation (& Building Classroom Community!)

Imagine If you could increase student participation & build classroom community… at the same time.

    Sounds lovely, doesn’t it?

So often, teachers focus on teaching the content that our curriculum requires, but we often forget a very important core element of teaching.

    Relationships

Students learn best when they have a genuine relationship with their teacher and their classmate. If we fail to set that foundation, we are passing up incredible opportunities for learning and growth in our classroom.

    Imagine with me.

You are working on teaching a new concept with your students and instead of having the same three students engaging in your classroom discussions, you have nearly the entire class interacting with one another.  And, as a bi-product of that student participation, you begin building a stronger classroom community.

This learning utopia is within reach.  Trust me.

Let me share several strategies to help you increase student participation so that you can reap the benefits it will provide for your classroom.

And, as a bonus: you may just become the coolest teacher ever!

3 Ways to Use Bulletin Boards With Students

3 Ways to Use Bulletin Boards With Students

Who doesn't love a good bulletin board display?

But - I just might love a good bulletin board set a little too much.

I’ve been guilty more than once of creating a bulletin board more for ME than for my students.  I loved the finish product.  I loved seeing the display up in all its glory.  But - I rarely actually used a bulletin board for my STUDENTS’ benefit.  I rarely referred to the bulletin board to reinforce student learning.

When I was in the classroom, I would obsess over every detail on my bulletin board. One year I made a particularly nice display that I was proud of, but when I made a reference to my bulletin board one day, one of my students asked “What bulletin board?”

    Ouch! That hurt. Bad.

But - it opened my eyes to the real purpose of a bulletin board.  The bulletin board should be used to teach, to be referenced, and to reinforce what your students are learning.

Today, I have three ideas to share with you. Ideas that will make bulletin boards have a bigger impact in your classroom by engaging students in learning.

In this week’s episode you’ll learn how to STOP just creating pretty bulletin boards that serve no purpose, and get more mileage out of your bulletin boards that result in real student learning.

    Attendance in EFL Classrooms

    Attendance in EFL Classrooms
This is our third episode, and our topic is attendance. We started with a CNN news story with the title of "Students with good attendance can win a new car." We talked about how many classes students were allowed to miss. We raised the question of what constitutes attendance. Also, we talked a little bit about rewarding participation, and this seems to be a topic worth returning to in more concrete detail in the future.
