    Howl's Moving Castle (2004)

    Howl's Moving Castle (2004)

With the impending release of Hayao Miyazaki's The Boy and The Heron (2023), we've decided to kick off a short series of anime film discussions to ready ourselves for the visual feast Studio Ghibli is sure to serve up. What better way to start that than with a Hayao Miyazaki joint? Join Dixon, Ryan, and John as journey into the waste and the war-torn lands of Howl's Moving Castle (2004) to discuss and discover the motifs and meaning in this fantastical love story. What's up with the wizard war? Does a pretty girl's heart just taste better than other hearts? Why is everyone able to cast spells without knowing the means to break them? The Afterthoughts crew is going to do their best to answer these questions and more as they cobble together the core reasons Howl's Moving Castle may still be roaming around in the minds of film lovers today.

Princess Mononoke - Exploring the Universal Problem of Death

Princess Mononoke - Exploring the Universal Problem of Death

    MOVIE DISCUSSION:

Happy Ani-May! Melanie and Melvin kick things off this month by discussing Hayao Miyazaki's adult animated feature: Princess Mononoke

    Topics:

    • (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 38-minutes discussing comments made about forgiveness in last week's Fireproof episode, as well as a further deep-dive into what God expects from His people regarding the concept (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)
    • Melanie and Melvin open by discussing adult nature of Princess Mononoke: political intrigue, warring factions, violence, etc.
    • Princess Mononoke sports deep, nuanced characters with incongruent mutual goals. This leads each character to be simultaneously relatable and at odds with the audience, depending on how the audience interprets each figure.
    • Despite all reasons for aspiration and conflict, everything dies under the weight of death. The end of Princess Mononoke explores this idea in particular.

    Grave of the Fireflies

    Grave of the Fireflies

Well fuck. Grave of the Fireflies absolutely ruined us. It's sad and now we are sad and you are probably also sad. Despite the heavy subject matter, we managed to have a good time and laugh a little. The film is an undisputed masterpiece as beautiful as it is emotional. Studio Ghibli definitely took an opportunity to present something singular and unique in their catalog with this story of Japan in WW2 and they succeeded - it's a must watch film. Watch it once, cry your eyes out, and never watch it again, but listen to us go through it on this episode and commiserate with us!

SPOILER ALERT!!!Save this episode for later if you want to experience this show without a high-energy, often heated, very thorough discourse on it's high and low points. We cover each Anime from top to bottom, leaving no stone unturned.

    Princess Mononoke

    Princess Mononoke

It's the legend Hayao Miyazaki's birthday this month so we're covering two of his most revered films starting with Princess Mononoke. It's a masterpiece and arguably transcends it's origin as an anime. This movie is filled with beautiful artistry and storytelling, deep characters and themes, epic action, and the perfect amount of whimsy. It's hard to find a bad thing to say about it and this is why Miyazaki is a legend whose films are timeless. If you haven't seen this movie yet, you fucked up. Watch it and then join us as we have a blast going over it meticulously.

Episode 240: The Game Awards 2: Electric Boogaloo
That's right, we got a lot more sequel announcements at The Game Awards then anyone may have expected! And we aren't done with awards, as the Golden Globe Nominees were announced as well, and it looks like were in for an interesting ride. Meanwhile what the hell is going on at DC, James Gunn seems to have a massive amount of possible or not possible leaks on his hands. Meanwhile, the FTC is now the third regulatory body to "look deeper" into the Microsoft acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

017: You Have Utterly Stunning Toe Cleavage

017: You Have Utterly Stunning Toe Cleavage
If there was even a moment that you thought Brooke McEldowney wasn't a weirdo, we offer up this six-pack of excursions into the world of Edda's "toe cleavage." It starts off super-weird, with Edda sitting on the sidewalk so Amos can gawk at her feet. After thirty years of knowing each other, this toe cleavage thing comes as a surprise to Edda, because that totally makes as much sense as anything else in this strip. A cop threatens to take them in, and eventually someone files a court order against Amos to keep him from publicly lavishing affection on Edda's toes. It does NOT stop him from gawking at them in front of his children, however. So that's cool. Finally, when the kids are asleep, Amos asks permission, but somehow the thrill is gone for Edda. In other words, just a normal week in this godforsaken comic. The Chickweed strips we discuss this episode: Amos gawks, then a cop shows up, then a cop admires Edda's toes too right here (https://twitter.com/9chickweedRAGE/status/1599453229892644865?s=20&t=WCsns7mc4wUrv5DOSySydw). The Wind Rises (2013)

Derek, Paul, Mel and Perry discuss the 2013 Studio Ghibli Film The Wind Rises. They talk about the best moments of the film and some of the deeper themes they connected with. Hayao Miyazaki films are none for being as thought-provoking as they are beautiful. They will also leave you with a couple questions you can ask your friends and family to engage in a meaningful conversation about the film.
