Then Is Now Episode 54 - Eddie Braun

Then Is Now Episode 54 - Eddie Braun

Here on Then Is Now, we strive to discuss pop culture of the past (THEN) and how it relates to the present (NOW). Today's episode is the perfect example of that! On September 8, 1974, daredevil Evel Knievel attempted to leap the mile-wide chasm of the Snake River Canyon in Twin Falls, Idaho, on his specially engineered rocket motorcycle. His parachute malfunctioned and opened on take-off, causing the rocket to float to the bottom of the canyon, landing on the riverbank directly below his launch ramp (If he'd gone into the river, his safety harness probably would have drowned him).

Over 40 years later, a highly talented and prolific stuntman, Eddie Braun, who idolized Kneivel ever since he was a kid, attempted to re-create the launch over the Canyon and finish what the legendary stunt rider had started. Eddie's amazing story has been chronicled in a documentary that airs on Disney+ July 23rd of this year, 2021, and we had the good fortune to have him on the show!

We go deep behind the scenes into the life of a stuntman, and Eddie tells some great stories about his career in Hollywood and what exactly stuntmen do! In almost every movie and TV show we see a stuntman, yet at the same time, we don't! This is one interview you won't want to miss!

Gimme Three - Stunt Films w/ Luci Romberg

Gimme Three - Stunt Films w/ Luci Romberg

Some of the most underrated and under appreciated artists that work in cinema are stunt performers. Not only does their work involve immense creativity and technical knowledge, but they also put their bodies on the line; not in the metaphorical way, they literally put their bodies on the line. So during Oscar week, we want to give some love to the department that the Academy has ignored for yet another year - the Stunt Department.

We bring you another one of our patented Gimme Three Episodes; Gimme Three Stunt Films. Helping us out with this kick-ass (pardon the pun) theme is Luci Romberg. An accomplished stunt woman a national champion gymnast. Luci has worked on dozens of films as a stunt performer including Thunder Force, Bird Box, Spy, The Conjuring, Zombieland and Ghostbusters.

Luci and host Nicholas Ybarra each give us three movies that blew their stunt-loving minds. Next time you’re watching a film or a television show, keep an eye out for the stunt work and give them a round of applause. They’ve more than earned it.

Enjoy the episode! Let us know what your favorite stunt films are!

Today we dive into one of the most interesting movies we've ever covered! A movie that spun off a made up character in a true story and gave that character their own movie. We also discuss Rami Malek and how confused we are about him and of course the incredible martial arts in this movie! This is a CAN'T MISS EPISODE!

    Ip Man w/ iLram Choi

New series alert! It's the martial arts extravaganza Ip Man! Today we are joined by iLram Choi (the Amazing Spider-Man, Star Trek, At World's End) stuntman extraordinaire, he dishes on how he and the other two Spider-Man stunt doubles were integral to the swinging style of your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, and how different the showdown between Spider-Man and Uncle Ben's killer would have been without him. We also discuss Sammo Hung, Movie Fu, and whether or not a stunt category should be added to the Oscars.

    #52 - Director Ray Austin

    #52 - Director Ray Austin

You can count on one finger those industry professionals who have transitioned from a career as a stuntman climbing the faces of Mount Rushmore in Hitchcock’s North by Northwest to that of Hollywood’s “go-to” television director.

That man is Ray Austin, whose work as a director includes episodes on every hit TV series from the 1960s to the present day.

In this incredibly entertaining conversation with Bob & Suzanne, Ray shares intimate stories of his wartime childhood and the events leading to his lifelong relationship with legendary film star Cary Grant. You’ll be infused with Ray’s unmatched energy and work ethic as he recalls his early conversation with Alfred Hitchcock that revealed his own ambition to someday replace Hitchcock in the director’s chair.

Ray created and coordinated the amazing stunts for such epics as Cleopatra and Spartacus, and worked as an actor in classic films like The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner. More acting followed in TV series like The Saint and The Avengers, which only whetted his appetite for calling the shots from behind the camera. You’ll hear how Ray’s athletic prowess and charismatic personality were matched by a keen writing ability that soon won him his first directing gigs.

The life and career of Ray Austin—with more than 300 directing credits ranging from The Saint and Black Beauty to Magnum, P.I., The Six Million Dollar Man, Highlander, Spenser: for Hire, and The New Zorro—and with a pantheon of show business celebrity friendships ranging from Cary Grant to TV’s iconic producer Quinn Martin--is nearly the stuff of fiction.

Today, Ray—the bona fide holder of an historic feudal Irish title as The Baron Raymond John DeVere-Austin—is the renowned author of Find Me a Spy, Catch Me a Traitor as well as the Beauford Sloan Mystery Series, a page-turning trilogy which includes The Eagle Heist, Dead Again, and Your Turn to Die (all great reads now available at Amazon.com).

The story of Ray Austin’s life and career is an inspiring and compelling piece of Hollywood history, the likes of which will never be seen again. It’s a conversation you don’t want to miss!
