Michelle Lhooq investigates how counterculture is evolving in the age of platform capitalism, algorithmic oppression and drug legalization. 176: Maybe the next one, darling. | Crash (1996)

Finally I've stepped into the world of David Cronenberg films. It really is fitting that the first one I see and review is Crash from 1996. It was both me and Charles' first watch and we were enthralled. The exploration of subcultures I always find fascinating and this certain was that. We talk about the physical reactions to car crashes, how James Spader is THAT one, and constantly remind you that it's not the same film as that abomination that won Best Picture in 2004.

off-topic rants include: who we would like to see in the film now, Christopher Meloni, Coen films, the history of NC-17 movies

    Dr. Mijung Park

    Dr. Mijung Park

Enjoy the season one finale of “Mental Health Trailblazers, Psychiatric Nurses Speak Up,” where our host Indrias Kassaye will be interviewing Dr. Mijung Park, a tenured Associate Professor at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Nursing. Through years of analysis and education, Dr. Park’s research has investigated the meaningful roles that both casual caregivers and close family play in fruitful chronic disease self-management between culturally and economically diverse communities.

After a fateful encounter on a subway in Korea, Dr. Parks was inspired to work in a psychiatric mental health inpatient unit as her first job post-graduation. Growing throughout her career as a nurse scholar, Dr. Park views her role within the field as translating complex concepts of care and health into more understandable cross-cultural language to aid not just patients but loved ones in understanding the world of psychiatric medicine.

Over the course of this episode, Dr. Park and Indrias connect on subjects such as vertical cultural differences via generational modifications and acculturation relevant across minority communities, ways Dr. Park drew attention to her study findings on stress in living environments to collectively help policy makers think about city design in a context of health, and the personal impacts of anti-Asian sentiments not just historically but also in the age of the COVID-19 crisis.

If you want to understand Dr. Park’s concerns regarding the current practice of looking at entire populations as a unifying cultural group vs. unique subcultures, aspire to discover more about the model minority myth in its portrayal of Asian immigrant groups along with its stressful consequences for those who don’t fit the mold, or just hope to pick up recommendations for psychiatric and mental health nurses providing care for patients from ethnic minorities, then catch this episode now. 154 | The Entrepreneurial Mindset of the Pop-Punk Lifestyle | with Sam Dean

On the tail end of some major life changes, in 2006, at the age of 23, Sam Dean took every penny he and his wife had (and some they didn't) and bet it all on selling body jewelry to strangers on the internet.

Fresh off the memories of the "dot com bubble" and unknowingly walking towards the '08 Financial Crisis, Sam was continuously warned by family and friends that the internet and body jewelry are fads and won't be around forever.

15 years later it seems wild that anyone ever doubted the Ecommerce future, but Sam saw the writing on the wall.

With hundreds of thousands of customers, Plug Your Holes now ships 8-12k orders per month and employs over 2 dozen people in their Kansas City headquarters.

    Subculture Cannibalism

    Subculture Cannibalism

Dichotomies fascinate  me. Right now it seems to me that are living in  culture that seems to be made up of almost nothing else.  Part of this can be but down to the shift nature of  our culture.   Some of it is me noticing things that were already there, but the ways the puzzle pieces continue to change and yet still slide together is just short of a miracle.   Today I thought I’d look briefly at one of these contrasts; how subcultures  cannibalize the very people they should be supporting.

    Episode 9 - Michael Tullberg

Michael moved to Los Angeles in 1991 and built his career in photojournalism, documenting the city’s goth and industrial scenes as well as the celeb-studded upscale Beverly Hills party scene. Dissatisfied with the velvet rope mentality and unremarkable music, Michael found his way into the underground rave scene at just the right time, towards the end of 1995.

Los Angeles was ground-zero for North American dance culture. The city was unique in its abundance of talent, its unique venues, and entertainment industry tastemakers. What happened in LA set the tone for America’s rave experience for years to come and Michael creatively documented it like no one before or since.

    In this episode we discuss:

    • Why LA was the perfect launchpad for the US rave experience
    • America's Satanic Panic vs its Rave Panic
    • Joe Biden's controversial RAVE Act
    • Why mid-sized events have disappeared from LA
    • How the underground vets attendees in the digital age
    • The weigh of identity politics on rave culture
    • And much, much more
