My name is Isra Mohammed — Isra Mohammed's speech to Kenton School on Islamophobia post Paris attacks, Newcastle, UK, 2015

My name is Isra Mohammed — Isra Mohammed's speech to Kenton School on Islamophobia post Paris attacks, Newcastle, UK, 2015

Isra Mohammed's speech to her school in Newcastle, UK, went went around the world in December of 2015. She was a 15 year old student at Kenton School, Newcastle, and she'd been subjected to racist and Islamophobic taunts after the ISIS attacks on Paris, that killed 130 people and injured hundreds more. When her brother and sister were targeted, Isra decided she had to do something, and so arranged to address the whole school, to tell her fellow students about Islam, and to try to dispel myths and ignorance about the religion. One delivery of this speech (she gave a few) was recorded, uploaded to YouTube and went around the world as a viral sensation.

SIDEBAR - Supreme Court Permits Retroactive Punitive Damages Against Sudan in Terrorism Cases

SIDEBAR - Supreme Court Permits Retroactive Punitive Damages Against Sudan in Terrorism Cases
More than two decades after the U.S. embassies bombings in Tanzania and Kenya, some plaintiffs who alleged that Sudanese support of Al Qaeda contributed to the attacks have won the opportunity to obtain punitive damages against the government of Sudan. The Supreme Court decided 8-0 (with no participation by Justice Kavanaugh) in Opati v. Republic of Sudan that Congress intended to make punitive damages available on a retroactive basis when it updated the terrorism exception to the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act (FSIA) in 2008. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit (D.C. Circuit) had decided otherwise, invalidating $4.3 billion in punitive damages and halving the Opati plaintiffs’ award for the embassy bombings. Under Opati, the D.C. Circuit is to reinstate some or all of those punitive damages.

    Summer special: Murder on trial

In 2011, Boronika Hothnyang was accused of fatally stabbing her best friend, William Awu, directly in the heart.

But when police arrived at the scene of the crime, Boronika's apartment in Dandenong south-east of Melbourne, she was fast asleep.

Six men who had earlier been drinking at her place each gave detectives a very different version of events.

In this episode, Sarah Dingle uncovers new evidence that raises serious questions about the strength of the case against Boronika.

The Social Media Generation: A powerful uprising led by fed up young people in Sudan.

On Friday August 30, 2019, former Sudanese president Omar Al Bashir admitted in court that he had received $25 million in cash from the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed Bin Salman(MBS). Mr. Al Bashir is facing corruption and possession of foreign currency charges that could send him in prison for decades. Omar Al Bashir was forced out of office in April 2019 following a massive uprising led by many young people, and a violent response by the Rapid Support Forces(RSF), a police/military unit loyal to Al Bashir. After Al Bashir was deposed, a coalition government was formed between the military and opposition leaders with hopes of peacefully alternating power in preparation for free and democratic elections. Al Bashir was ousted after violent protests led by young Sudanese people many of the leaders of the protests were young women, and they used social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram to spread their message worldwide. Omar Al Bashir who spent nearly three decades as president, financed and supported the ethnic genocide of the populations of the Darfur region that saw over a million deaths and millions of refugees. The atrocities perpetrated by Janjaweed barbarians supported by Al Bashir caused the International Criminal Court to issue an arrest warrant against him for war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity in March 2009. Upon his arrest, millions of dollars in local and foreign currencies were found stashed inside his palace, meanwhile millions of Sudanese youth lacked jobs, education, food, potable water and electricity. This episode analyzes the root cause of issues in Sudan from its inception to independence, and through the multiple coup d’etats that culminated in Omar Al Bashir’s ascension to power, and his eventual demise.

Giving Sudanese-Australians a Voice in the Media

Giving Sudanese-Australians a Voice in the Media

The Australian Human Rights Commission has highlighted the discrimination experienced by African-Australians in contemporary Australia - through media representations, and the adverse effects of such discrimination.

A critical challenge for any society is the search for social justice, a core dimension of which concerns the promotion of belonging, a sense of feeling a part of society.

An innovative research based journalism training initiative for Sudanese-Australians has been developed to seek to promote social inclusion and belonging through mobilising the communicative power of the media.
