SPECIAL ANNOUNCMENT- Pastor Brian Podcast Season 6 coming the Fall . . .

SPECIAL ANNOUNCMENT- Pastor Brian Podcast Season 6 coming the Fall . . .

Hey, y’all! This is Pastor Brian at the Pastor Brian Podcast, just letting you know a little about the end of Season 5 and the beginning of Season 6. I had always intended to end Season 5 of the Pastor Brian Podcast with the Easter episode. However, in a truly bone-head move, I didn’t mention that at the end of the episode (but in the crazy ramp up from the end of Lent to the beginning of Easter I somehow, in mind, thought I did). Thus, many folks, very politely, through email and in-person, asked when the next episode was coming out . . . and I realized I never actually mentioned that at the end of the Easter episode! Again, so sorry if you have been listening and thought maybe I quit the podcast game or accidently died. No, all is well, we are just taking a break to refocus and book new guests for next Season . . . which will be Season 6!

Thus, I wanted to share what the Season format will look like for the Pastor Brian Podcast! The new 6th Season of Pastor Brian Podcast (which consists of a monthly interview of lay people and clergy doing amazing but often unseen ministry) will begin in September 2022 and go through Easter 2023 in April. Then we will take four months off (just like this summer). I have so many exciting ministries I want to share with you . . . this Sixth Season is going to be fantastic! I can’t wait until September . . . and I will look forward to praying with ya!!!

You Can't Be Serious With Kal Penn

You Can't Be Serious With Kal Penn

    It's a reunion!

Twenty years after being his production assistant on a film set in Austin, TX, Kal Penn and I get a chance to sit down and catch up about it all.

Kal Penn, is an American actor, author, academic lecturer and former White House staff member in the Barack Obama administration. You may know him from television shows such as House, Designated Survivor, Sunnyside, and How I Met Your Mother. He is also recognized for his performance in the film The Namesake and of course the Harold and Kumar series ( I personally still love Taj Mahal Badalandabad). Penn has taught at the University of Pennsylvania in the Cinema Studies Program as a visiting lecturer

We talk about it all from our first impressions, to those fantastic middle school years, to his job as a farmhand right before he went to UCLA. He talks about the meaning behind the Brown Catch-22, his journey with stereotyping in Hollywood, his experience going to India with President Barack Obama, and why he needed a mini-fridge in the White House.

We of course bust out with some Gujarati (our native Indian language) which Kal definitely schools me on.

His new memoir, You Can’t Be Serious, is out and it’s a fantastic read! There just wasn't enough time to give a shout out to all the uncles and aunties we loved growing up.....

You Can't Be Serious With Kal Penn- Teaser Trailer

You Can't Be Serious With Kal Penn- Teaser Trailer

Hey guys! Just wanted to really quickly to let you know that we've got a very special conversation coming out this week!

Twenty years after being his Production Assistant on a film in Austin, TX, I got a chance to sit down with my old pal with Kal Penn to talk about his book, You Can't Be Serious, and breadth of work throughout his career

We touched on so many important topics, including his time at the White House and the challenges he faced as an Indian-American in Hollywood.  My conversation with Kal was uplifting, funny and real.  I wanted to give you just a little teaser today to get you excited because I definitely am!

The full episode will be coming out tomorrow, July 20th, so before then, make sure that you're subscribed wherever you're listening to my voice right now, and that you tell a friend about the show so they can listen too.

Also,  I'll be doing a giveaway for Kal's book, "You Can't Be Serious", so stay tuned all week for content surrounding the interview!

Enjoy the clip and be sure to listen to the full episode on Wednesday and also be sure to rate and review the podcast!

Our Last Drive-In Communion of the Year at Gary Church! SUPPLEMENTAL- Sunday, June 6th, 2021

Our Last Drive-In Communion of the Year at Gary Church! SUPPLEMENTAL- Sunday, June 6th, 2021

Welcome to our Last Drive-In Communion of the year at Gary Church! This is a Supplemental Episode made for the Gary Church congregation taking Holy Communion . . . from our vehicles in the parking lot! The sacraments are a gift God gave to empower us by the Holy Spirit to faithfully live as disciples of Jesus Christ. We made this podcast so folks can still hear the words and prayers of Holy Communion as they are being said at the same time as Pastor Brian and Pastor Chris in the parking lot, even though we are in separate vehicles. If you are not a part of Gary Church you are still welcome to listen to the prayers . . . they are scriptural and powerful. However, as you know, this does not make any bread or juice/wine around you at the time you listen to this the sacrament . . . that’s not how it works! Yet, we would love to partake in this Holy Meal with you if you are ever in Wheaton, IL on a Sunday.

E5 High Rise - AYR & Cresco earnings, Gen Z share of wallet & geriatric millennials, and how high tax rates creates looping

This week we get into the weeds with AYR and Cresco to see how their earnings might pan out.  We talk about Gen Z share of wallet in an adult use world, plus a Sunnyside retail X YouGov study that shows 25% of Americans now consume cannabis. Lastly we get into a side effect of high tax rates known as 'looping'. As always there's never a dull moment in our break down of the cannabis market and the players in the space. 56 - Tim Kitchen, Dennis Scanland

56 - Tim Kitchen, Dennis Scanland

This episode Let’s Meet For A Beer becomes Let’s Meet For A Cider when Sunny Cider cofounders Tim Kitchen and Dennis Scanland join the show. We discuss how an urban farming company and a home cidery project evolved into a community centred Cidery making traditional 100% fruit cider using apples grown in communities across Calgary.

Tim and Dennis first got to know each other as neighbours, living just down the block from each other in Calgary’s community of Sunnyside. Dennis had an urban farming company called Dirty Boys, which later morphed into YYC growers. For those who aren’t familiar, urban farming is the practice of growing vegetables in other people’s “donated land,” which in this case meant a quarter acre of land spread across many front and back yards in Calgary. These vegetables would then be sold to restaurants or farmer’s markets, with the owners of the land being compensated with a share of the harvest, or “the rent was mostly vegetables” as Dennis put it.

As part of the urban farming business Dennis got his hands on literal tonnes of apples and he and Tim would start out making cider in Tim’s garage as a hobby, and they tell us that their first couple batches of cider didn’t turn out all that great, but with after friendly advice they learned the trick to making that cider better, patience. By 2017 they’d be collectively harvesting 20,000kg of apples around the city and thought if there was this much fruit available they might as well make a go of it and turn this into a proper cidery. After two years and a surprise visit from the AGLC, they’d open the doors of Sunny Cider in May of 2019.

Regular listeners of the show and supporters of Calgary’s brewing industry will already be familiar with community being a common focus in the space, but Sunny Cider is unique in that their community project came first, and they built the cidery from there. While Sunny Cider may not be located in it’s namesake community of Sunnyside, they continue to source a huge portion of their fruit from communities across Calgary, working with community centres to create fruit drop offs so they can get their hands on the amazing apples, pears, and other local fruits that make for great cider. Tim sums up their approach perfectly: “I didn’t set out to make great cider, it came as a result of working to make a strong community"
