#35 - Embracing Discomfort: Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable

The topic of race and racial discrimination continues to remain a pressing issue in modern society particularly in schools for both students, teachers and leaders. As discussions surrounding racism and microaggressions become more prevalent, it is crucial for white people to not only participate in these conversations but also to be comfortable with the inevitable discomfort that comes with them.

It’s time to have some “real talk” about embracing discomfort and empowering white allies in the fight against racism in our schools and districts.

In this episode, we will be exploring:

    1. The importance of white allies being comfortable with being uncomfortable when discussing topics like microaggressions, racism, and discrimination against Black people in the workplace.
    2. Tips and resources for white allies to better understand the Black experience and strengthen their allyship.
    3. Practical actions white allies can take to help create a truly inclusive work environment that supports and uplifts Black colleagues.

Join me as we navigate these critical conversations, and together, learn how we can break down barriers and champion change in our schools for both our amazing educators, leaders and ultimately, our students. Let's get started!"

#34 - Real Talk About MLK Day

#34 - Real Talk About MLK Day

Today is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, better known as MLK Day.  Many people will post their favorite MLK quote. Some white allies will even join in marches around the country remembering the legacy of Dr. King, usually quoting from his  "I Have A Dream"speech. Today is often filled with remembrance, but in too many spaces and places just more talk.

It’s time to have some “real talk” about the misuse of Dr. King’s quotes as it pertains to moving the needle to anti-racist schools and communities.  We all can learn so much if we examine Dr. King’s legacy which unapologetically embraced action to create equity  moving from “more talk” to “real talk”.

In this episode you will learn:

    • How MLK Quotes are used to undermine his legacy.
    • The difference between “more talk” and “real talk”.
    • Tips to move from awareness to action on MLK day and beyond.

#33 - Tips to Prioritize Student Athlete Safety

#33 - Tips to Prioritize Student Athlete Safety

Injuries are a common occurrence in sports, especially in the NFL where players can be seriously injured in front of a large audience. This was the case for Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, who collapsed on the field during a Monday Night Football game against the Cincinnati Bengals on January 2, 2023. It was immediately clear that this was a serious and potentially life-threatening situation. Athletic trainers and paramedics worked feverishly to stabilize Hamlin on the field before transporting him to the hospital. Fortunately, at the time of this recording, Hamlin is making a miraculous recovery.  This particular incident has brought to the forefront the question of safety for football players and athletes in general from the professional level all the way down to K12.

It’s time to have some “real talk” about how important it is for schools to prioritize the safety of their athletes and have a comprehensive support plan in place to prevent and address any injuries that may occur.  In this episode we will discuss how to protect our student athletes to help you advocate and or review, depending on your current role in education, current practices in your district.

    Dr. Jeff Horton: Courageous Conversations

    Dr. Jeff Horton: Courageous Conversations

This episode is a look inside what it takes for leaders to have courageous conversations with their stakeholders across the community. In this conversation we answer these questions and more:

    1. How can you transform hurt to hope?
    2. What role do accountability and vulnerability play in the superintendency?
    3. Can active listening and open conversations change a district’s story and even its finances?
    4. How can you give your community a reason to believe in your schools and your district’s future?

Dr. Jeff Horton joined GFW School District as superintendent months before the pandemic arrived, schools closed, and change was forced upon businesses and organizations. This is a story of transformation and rallying support to change a community that had 81% voting “No” on a past bond referendum to supporting a new operating levy in less than 50 days and 63% voting “Yes.”Join the conversation to start thinking differently about how you can shape your community’s perception of your district.

Bridging a gap in the conversation around innovation – about the US education system with Doug Roberts

Bridging a gap in the conversation around innovation – about the US education system with Doug Roberts
Doug Robers, who started out as a teacher, has worked in and with the US education system in a wide variety of roles over the years. Based on his accumulated experiences, he founded the Institute for Education Innovation in 2018, which he still manages as CEO. In the podcast “School must go on,” Doug Roberts talks about the unique structures in the US education system, and the background and work of the Institute for Education Innovation. – “We aim to bridge a gap in the conversations around innovation” – Doug Roberts talks about two different groups: On the one hand the district leaders who are working hard to try to find the most creative and innovative solution to problems, and on the other hand, entrepreneurs and founders of organizations who are similarly working to provide creative and innovative solutions to challenges. “It can be hard for them to find each other, partially because our process of buying and selling in K12 is somewhat antiquated”, Doug explains. “So what if we create a robust and sort of level playing field, democratized ecosystem where any company or nonprofit or other organization, regardless of its size, experience, influence, investor backing or not, can have access to districts that are trying to solve the problem that they're working on.” It’s not necessarily about doing business, Doug says, it’s about learning what’s out there and then figuring out how you can improve what you are currently doing. “Overall it’s a community of people who are curious and engaged in trying to get better at what they do.” – Building relationships instead of only doing business – “You can't come to the Institute for Education Innovation and just think about profit”, Doug explains. “What you want to think about is growing your organization and growing your relationships.” The companies that do best, he says, come in with a focus on listening, on building relationships and on working the problem. “So, if you’re a solution in search of a problem, that’s going to be tough. If you know that there’s a problem and you're looking at the problem and trying to provide a solution to it, our members will see that, identify it and then try to work with you to figure out how you can solve the problem on the ground in their place.” Doug observed that in the end relationships are much more important than the business. “But if you go and build the relationships and listen and take the right approach, the business comes.” – The importance of superintendents – “We do have a unique thing here in the fact that our schools are governed by local boards of education who hire a superintendent who then runs a school system”, Doug says. He thinks the business acumen of these superintendents is not appreciated enough. “They see all the different angles to work in a district. They are running a hundreds-of-millions budget, and managing all the complex operations with thousands of people reporting to them. They have to be over these large bureaucracies, organizations and civil servants and we all kind of know what a school looks like.”, Doug emphasizes. “And it's the entrepreneurial aspect of superintendent work that we try to help people understand that it is a big part of their jobs.” So, the superintendent is the right place to start the conversation, Doug Roberts says, but also the hardest person to reach in the school district because of the massive operations they have to run. “But anything that's kind of enterprise level, you really need the district Leadership team on board, and that's where we help.” Doug Roberts also talks about the procurement and purchasing process, the current state of tech, and past and future development.
