    Creating a Bridge to Transformation

    Creating a Bridge to Transformation

Rachael Osorio opens up our ideas of connection and transformation in this influential and inspiring conversation.

Growing up in a small town sparked Rachael's curiosity and desire to immerse herself in opportunities that opened up an understanding of the different ways people see the world. After graduating with an undergraduate degree in International Relations, she dove into the world of non-profits only to be greeted by a persistent tug toward the world of education.

She pursued a Masters degree in the Arts of Teaching and worked in school districts with vastly different cultures. Having worked in both charter and public schools, she began to notice the gaps that the educational system failed to address in each community. Her desire to do more fuelled her to leave the classroom not fully understanding what would come next. The next two years she dedicated herself to reflection and pursuing a personal goal of speaking Spanish.

She moved with her husband and two young children to Costa Rica for a full immersion experience. A beautiful country full of beautiful people and very different challenges, it was there that she realized a connecting thread in her experiences: "Many of us have a strong desire to help yet aren't taking into consideration the specific values and challenges that each community faces, whether they're neighboring cities or different countries. We think we have the answers from the outside, but becoming rooted on the inside reveals a very different perspective."

This fuelled her desire to become a Solutions Strategist but with a different angle. Now residing in Washington, DC, Rachael works with organizations and individuals to unveil solutions using the deep knowledge of the recipients of the help and the local community involved. Still very passionate about understanding different perspectives she enjoys getting to know the truths that each community holds.

Hold onto your hats, this conversation will have you thinking differently about how you approach your role in the community, and your investment in making relationships that are strong and vibrant for the well-being of more than just your immediate circle.

Wann geht man diesen Schritt?

Was kommt gut an, was eher nicht?

“Allyship Requires Risk”

    “Allyship Requires Risk”
What makes someone an ally? For Rosa, it’s learning to love queer people even though it was her gay ex-husband who hurt her the most. For Jean-Claire, it was ensuring a beloved gay uncle was properly remembered for all of who he was, rather than a “straight-washed” version of him. In this episode, Phil and Alex dive into the true meaning of being an ally, how it’s lost its meaning over time, and what meaningful allyship looks like in the real world.

#37: Nurturing the Important Relationships in your Life with Catie

#37: Nurturing the Important Relationships in your Life with Catie

Today we are talking with Catie, who by nature is such a nurturing woman. Catie’s kindness and love of taking care of others reflects in her marriage, parenting, grandparenting, and friendships. It all started when she devoted herself to helping her husband finish and succeed in medical school. Her love overflowed into raising her children, and children who were not biologically hers. Catie’s most current season (and maybe her favorite so far) is nurturing her grandchildren. Catie is a wonderful example of how to unapologetically be a supporter and a nurturer and leaning into the gifts that God has given her. Catie tells us that you do not always have to lead from the front, in fact sometimes the most important work is done behind the scenes. She is the kind of person we would all love to have in our lives, and I am lucky enough to have her be a part of mine. In this episode, Catie talks about a special friendship that she has poured into for many years despite the changing circumstances of her life. I hope this episode can encourage you to put the rewarding effort into your relationships.

    Episode Highlights:

    ●     Catie getting engaged in 3 weeks and married in 3 months

    ●     Helping her husband through medical school

    ●     Raising children who were not biologically hers

    ●     Catie’s relationship with her best friends

    ●     Leading from the back

#5 Mikayla Burkart’s Story: Discovering Who You Are and Choosing To Do What You Love To Do Instead Of What Everyone Else Wants You To Do

#5 Mikayla Burkart’s Story: Discovering Who You Are and Choosing To Do What You Love To Do Instead Of What Everyone Else Wants You To Do

In this episode Mikayla talks about her life and how her learning struggles shaped who she is today. Mikayla is an only child and has had a great childhood. She played a lot of sports growing up, with ringette being her main sport. Mikayla and I have known each other since we were young through ringette! We were never truly best friends until she came to Foothills Academy school!

Mikayla started experiencing mental health and different challenges in high school. She would never go to class and pretend that she was sick so she didn't have to go. After a lot of struggles Mikayla and her parents decided that she should get tested for learning disabilities. It turns out that she had a few learning disabilities like dyscalculia, ADD, a little bit of ADHD, and poor working memory. When she was tested they then looked into schools that would help her. She ended up choosing Foothills Academy in Calgary which made the world of a difference as the teachers understood and took time to get to know her.

Everything didn't fall into place magically once going to Foothills Academy School but it definitely helped her to learn with different tools. As she approached graduation she had decided that she wanted to be a nurse. Although she did not have the grades for it she did not give up. After graduating in 2018 she decided to attend Mount Royal, she ended up getting overwhelmed and dropped most of her classes. Then she decided to attend Bow Valley College for a nursing program but it wasn't going well either. Then to make the situation worse covid-19 hit and her motivation decreased even more. As she was feeling depressed and lonely she turned to her art. She realized that she was no longer happy doing school and decided to drop out. Now she's doing something that she loves and is planning on going to SAIT to pursue her natural artistic talents.

#4 Noreen Music’s Story: Bouncing Back After Life Shattering News and Redefining Job Security

#4 Noreen Music’s Story: Bouncing Back After Life Shattering News and Redefining Job Security

In this episode Noreen talks about her life and how her corporate role challenged her in many ways. Noreen has traveled the world but has always lived in Calgary. She is from a big family and is an identical twin. Noreen was planning on going down the path of natural healing but decided to change directions. She then got a corporate job and over time she climbed the corporate ladder as she was willing to take on difficult tasks and was always curious.

Once she was in a leadership role many issues she had faced previously became worse. Noreen discusses her struggles of being the only woman in the room. She tried to change herself to fit in but realized she just needed to be herself. Due to the way she was treated she had a very inclusive leadership style with her team. She didn’t hide her beliefs and stayed strong throughout her journey there. Then everything changed
 She was fired.

“Here I thought for so many years that having a job, being in the corporate world, was security but in a heart beat someone can decide that you are no longer useful. Give me your access card and business cards and don’t let the door hit you on the way out. Instantly you're done. Your whole life is shattered. Whereas doing something of my own that I pour my heart into and that no one gets to decide anything or the direction that my business goes. It’s my business and creation.”

Losing her job was devastating for Noreen. It took her many tears and lots of personal work to get to a place where she was okay. She decided that she was going to climb her second mountain differently than she climbed her first one. She decided to start her own business and she did it scared but she is so successful and would never turn back to the corporate world. Noreen is now a trained Professional Organizer and is the Owner of Organize My Space Calgary which specializes in home and office integration.

#3 Bridget Halfyard’s Story: The Impact Of Hockey And Not Letting Anything Steal Your Joy Through Tough Times

#3 Bridget Halfyard’s Story: The Impact Of Hockey And Not Letting Anything Steal Your Joy Through Tough Times

In this episode Bridget talks about the role hockey played in her life and her health journey. Growing up in a family that was very involved in hockey, the love came naturally. Bridget talked about her childhood and what it was like being the baby of five children in the family. She was born and raised in the Greater Toronto Area but eventually moved to Alberta. Her passion for hockey is evident throughout her story as she always played on a school team and even went to Switzerland for a year to play on a team!

Bridget discussed her love for learning and her education journey. She has a Masters Degree in Divinity from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor's Degree in English Literature from the University of Waterloo, then continued to Mount Royal University to become a Licensed Funeral Director in Alberta. Later in her life she became very ill. She was unable to work and could hardly get out of bed. The only thing that she was able to do was to assistant coach hockey in Cochrane for the female team (my team). After a lot of pain and talking to many health professionals she found out that she had a rare type of cancer. Bridget explains the challenges but also the great things that have come from all her health struggles.

Bridget also has so much love and compassion for those who are grieving as she has grieved many losses herself in her lift. She lost four family members very close to each other and experienced different types of grief with the loss of each of them. Her passion now is to share the life story of many as her role as a Funeral Celebrant and help others navigate through this difficult grievance time.

Throughout our conversation Bridget talks about her love for hockey, her healing process after her cancer, advice on how to deal with grief and so much more.
