PART 2: Legendary singer/songwriter LAMONT DOZIER (June 16 1941 - August 8, 2022)  of Motown Records and Holland-Dozier-Holland fame wrote some of the most iconic hits in pop music history. Music journalist A. SCOTT GALLOWAY stops by to help pay tribute.

PART 3: Singer/Songwriting giant KIPPER JONES (co-writer of Brandy's "I Wanna Be Down" , "Baby" & "Best Friend") stops by for the first time to join a panel with JANINE COVENEY & JULIANA JAI BOLDEN to discuss the public kerfuffle between. Kelis & Beyonce and the delicate balance between artistry & royalties.

In Episode 10, Dr. J and Sir Fred light up the podcast with Motown history, hitting Scott over the head with the Supremes, Barry Gordy, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and Rare Earth among many others. Sir Fred ties in the subsidiary labels with speak of Sun and Schoolkids Records as well, and a Dick Wagner easter egg at the end of the Episode as we ask the audience to chime in.

RARE & SCRATCHY ROCK 'N ROLL_095 – "THE FIRST FIVE YEARS OF MOTOWN RECORDS – 64 HIT SINGLES" –

The Motown Sound helped define the music of a generation during the company’s heyday in the 1960s and early 1970s. The Motown family of labels has been celebrated in television specials, stage musicals, and Hollywood movies. 

You may recall that “Rare & Scratchy Rock ‘N Roll” episodes #4 and #5 presented a two-part alternative history of Motown Records – with little known stories about one of the biggest hit-making studios in popular music history. Now, we’ll revisit the five-year period that encompassed its founding in 1959 through 1963 – just before its explosive growth and domination of the rock charts for more than a decade. 

Some early Motown releases featured emerging superstars. Others were performed by acts that subsequently faded into obscurity. The Beatles named one of these budding performers as their favorite female singer. 

Motown charted 64 rock and rhythm & blues singles from 1959 to 1963, and you’ll hear them all right here.

This week Beth and Kelly discuss the current controversy surrounding the June 28th resignation letter from Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy.  Was his hand forced? Did his son lend Trump billions? Were the Russians involved? Do liberals need tin foil hats? We talk about all this and more! 

Host Cynthia Bemis Abrams puts on her leadership professor cap to wax enthusiastically about the 90 minute of video of one of the most significant concerts of the 20th century. In the early 80s, budding paid-cable channel Showtime courted new subscribers with novel streaming opportunities like Diana Ross in concert in Central Park. Cynthia breaks down Ross' on-stage leadership during a torrential rain storm and how she handled the crowd, their exit from the park and her promise to return the next day. Cynthia asks, where were the lawyers?

Motown legend Lamont Dozier meets with Simon and Brian in Liverpool to discuss the writing of songs like 'Where Did Our Love Go', 'Baby Love', 'Stop! In The Name of Love', 'You Can't Hurry Love' (The Supremes); 'Heatwave', 'Nowhere to Run', 'Jimmy Mack' (Martha Reeves & The Vandellas); 'Baby I Need Your Loving', 'I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)', 'It's the Same Old Song', 'Reach Out, I'll Be There', 'Bernadette' (The Four Tops), and the Phil Collins smash 'Two Hearts'.

Episode 3 – 60’s Motown

In celebration of the 50^th Anniversary of the Motown Record Label, we thought we’d take a look at some suggestions from the Motown catalogue from the 1960’s.

In this episode we features songs from the Motown greats… The Four Tops, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell, the Temptations and one of my personal Motown Favourites Heaven Must Have Sent You by the Elgins.

We will return to the Motown label again later this year in celebration of the 50^th anniversary. With tunes from Smokey, Lionel, The Commodores to name a just a few.
