Living on Tree Time with Katie Holten

Living on Tree Time with Katie Holten

Katie Holten is an Irish artist and activist based in New York City whose work is inspired by the relationship between humans and the natural world. She’s spent the last several years working on a tree alphabet to translate the world in a way that might connect us more intimately with nature, where each letter corresponds with an indigenous tree species (there’s even a downloadable font). Earlier this year, Holten published a gorgeous book called "The Language of Trees: A Rewilding of Literature and Landscape." The book, which includes contributions from people like Winona LaDuke, Camille Dungy, and Ross Gay, is both an offering, a conversation, and a call to action.

On this week’s episode, we speak with Katie about the ways in which people can rebuild their connection with the land, repairing our broken language through nature and story, the Rights of Nature, the process of creating the language of trees, and the importance of art as a tool for social and political action.

Dyed Green is a project of Bog & Thunder, whose mission is to highlight the best of Irish food and culture, through food tours, events, and media. Find out more at www.bogandthunder.com.

James Bridle — The Intelligence Singing All Around Us

James Bridle — The Intelligence Singing All Around Us

You might want to take a walk with this one. It is big and full of brain food and an enlivening opening of imagination to possibilities that are emergent now: the notion of the “broad commonwealth of life” that we are “inextricably entangled with and suffused by”; the paradox that the more accurately you try to measure some things, the more unmeasurable they become; the way words we use all the time have kept our cellular belonging to the natural world alive, even as civilization forgot.

The technologist/artist James Bridle brings all of this into interplay with an intriguing, refreshing lens on our lives with technology — and with all that artificial intelligence is and might become.

You might not think of intelligence the same way again, or the truth of mythology, or the letters of the alphabet, or what it means to be human. And you will smile next time you access the place where your digital life is stored and realize what it says about us that we named it The Cloud.

James Bridle is an artist and technologist and author of the books Ways of Being: Animals, Plants, Machines: The Search for a Planetary Intelligence and New Dark Age: Technology and the End of the Future. Their writing has appeared in The Guardian, Wired, The Atlantic, and many other places. Their art has been exhibited around the world, including at NOME Gallery in Berlin.

Stresslevel senken mit Waldbaden! Shinrin Yoku (RH #78)

Was ist Waldbaden? Shinrin Yoku #1

Was ist Waldbaden? Shinrin Yoku #1

“And into the forest I go to lose my mind and find my soul!” (John Muir, 1869)

    The Elf of Plants

    The Elf of Plants

This week Vanessa from ‘The Mindful Narrowboat’ vlog got me thinking and so this week we begin to explore how our knowledge and (perhaps) attitudes to fungi are changing and leading us back to older ways of thinking about the environment and our place within it.

    Journal entry:

    “21st October, Thursday

    A Hunter’s Moon swinging high
     Across a highwayman’s sky
     Of racing clouds.

The streets of Birmingham run wet
     With the glittering jewels of
Brake lights and shop front signs.

    Later,
     A gull soars through the
     Thermal canyons and valleys
Under a sky of cut sapphire.

    Later still,
The Plough silently revolves over the boat
     Needle sharp shards of light
At the moment, tilting north. ”

    Episode Information

In this episode I read the following poems:
Emily Dickinson’s ‘The Mushroom is the elf of plants
    Sylvia Plath’s ‘Mushrooms’ ,
You can hear Sylvia Plath’s own reading of her poem here: Sylvia Plath reads ‘Mushrooms.’

    I also read excerpts from:
John Clare’s (1827) from ‘October’ in The Shepherd’s Calendar
Wendell Berry’s (2017) The World-Ending Fire: Essential Wendell Berry published by Catapult.
Robin Wall Kimmerer (2020) Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous wisdom, scientific knowledge and the teachings of plants published by Penguin.  It is also published in the shorter volume:  The Democracy of Species also published by Penguin as part of their ‘Green Ideas’ series.

I also refer to the works of:
    Suzanne Simard (2021)

    About Missing Witches

Amy Torok and Risa Dickens produce the Missing Witches Podcast. We do every aspect from research to recording, it is a DIY labour of love and craft. Missing Witches is entirely member-supported, and getting to know the members of our Coven has been the most fun, electrifying, unexpectedly radical part of the project.

These days the Missing Witches Coven gathers in our private, online coven circle to offer each other collaborative courses in ritual, weaving, divination, and more; we organize writing groups and witchy book clubs; and we gather on the Full and New Moon from all over the world.

Our coven includes solitary practitioners, community leaders, techno pagans, crones, baby witches, neuroqueers, and folks who hug trees and have just been looking for their people.

Our coven is trans-inclusive, anti-racist, feminist, pro-science, anti-ableist, and full of love.

If that sounds like your people, come find out more. Please know that we've been missing YOU.

Mycorrhizal Fungi - Dr. Suzanne Simard

Mycorrhizal Fungi - Dr. Suzanne Simard

Mycorrhizal fungi are critical to life on Earth. They have symbiotic relationships with surrounding plant life and are vital for the growth and health of forests. Today we are joined by Dr. Suzanne Simard, one most influential researchers on these fungi. Suzanne has largely contributed to the scientific acknowledgment to mycorrhizal ecology, as well as creating awareness about their critical role in local and global ecosystems.

As we learn more about these subterranean networks, their function in the world more and more vital. We are in an era where we are losing our forests faster than we can understand (let alone protect) what we truly lose from deforestation. Suzanne is sounding the alarm by proclaiming what we've discovered so far. We discuss what we do know about the vitality of mycorrhizal communities, current and predicted repercussions of disturbing them, and how we can support their restoration.

    Topics covered:

    • A dive into Suzanne’s personal and professional journey
    • Why old growth forests are imperative
    • What our world would look if we did not have mycorrhizal fungi
    • The function of mycorrhizal communities in local and global ecosystems
    • Dark septate endophytic fungi and other forms of fungal symbiosis
    • Suzanne’s book “Finding the Mother Tree”
