Not The Song You're Thinking Of

Not The Song You're Thinking Of

Episode 230: This week's episode is a very special one, as Joe and Kari welcome their first international guest to the podcast: Listener Dom from New Zealand! Dom has been kind enough to suggest some of the segments that we've brought to you on HRT80s, and this week, we get to know the man behind the ideas, and what exactly he loves about music from the 1980s.

Then we invite Dom to discuss one of his segment ideas: Not the Song You're Thinking Of, which takes a look at songs that have the same title as huge hits of the 80s, like "Freedom", "I'm Your Man", "Trouble" and "The Power of Love". You don't want to miss this episode!

His first full length record, In Your Blood is set to drop June 23rd accompanied by a blowout solo show at @monarchtavern in Toronto. Be sure to check Castle Frank out, an outstanding songwriter! Our featured track (one of my favs) "Just Kids" plays at the end of our chat. 🤘

    Blancmange

I’m so tall, I’m so tall. This episode is all about the comeback and consistency. It’s incredible to think that since they reactivated, Neil Arthur has recorded 10 albums as Blancmange in just over a decade. Beginning as a duo (with Stephan Luscombe)  at the dawn of the eighties, their lo-fi experiment electronic pop inspired Mute Records’ Daniel Miller to call them “The Maiden Aunts of Techno”.  Those timeless mega anthems, synonymous with that era like Living On The Ceiling followed, before they called it a day. Then, all of a sudden, 11 years ago, the project materialised again. Paul caught up with Neil, a true eighties survivor on something of a creative roll now.

Blancmange’s new album Private Life is available on London Records.

1988! An Historic Year When Pop Expands: Our Top-12 Songs!

1988 is a wild year in music. Most of the big names that defined the 1980s are taking a break, leaving the door open for a number of new faces to break in and help define the sound that'll take us into the 1990s. This is a year of rap, of freestyle- and house-inspired dance, of alternative rock, and of off-centered mainstream pop.

Join Tim and Chris as they pick their top-12 songs of 1988. These are nominees for the prestigious Hall of Songs, the hall of fame for songs that currently includes 72 songs. Listen to the episode, then vote for your Hall of Songs picks at hallofsongs.com.
