Fake It Till You Legislate It

Fake It Till You Legislate It

Deepfakes. Everyone has seen a deepfake by now, whether consciously or unconsciously. They’ve taken the digital world by storm and their rapid spread on social media is out of control. The latest victims that have fallen prey to deepfakes include A-listers like Taylor Swift, Joe Biden and Sachin Tendulkar. World leaders everywhere have been racking their brains trying to draft deepfake legislation that would curb the spread of disinformation. In the meantime, there are other pressing questions that warrant a discussion. Does the prohibition of deepfakes mean a clampdown on free expression? Also, will stricter legislation of deepfakes discourage innovation in the space of AI? For more on this, tune in with Rohan Pai and Bharath Reddy as they dive into the exciting, yet alarming, world of deepfakes and analyse the various legislative approaches designed to combat them on this episode of All Things Policy.

140 An In-Depth Discussion About the Ethics of AI-Generated Art (w/ Human Artist Sky Burkson)

140 An In-Depth Discussion About the Ethics of AI-Generated Art (w/ Human Artist Sky Burkson)

Miniature artist and video game connoisseur Sky Burkson returns to the show to fill in for Colette. And while we set out to talk about some video game news, we veer into a wide-ranging and deeply philosophical discussion about the artistic process, and the ethics of AI art, which has reared its head in nearly every industry — including video games.

We discuss the very purpose of (capital "A") Art, and the scenarios in which AI tools could ethically be used (if at all), including a model of regulatory transparency that might satisfy concerned artists...if the tech is even possible, given AI's current "black box" approach. Media literacy, the future of the Internet, and humanity's very purpose hang in the balance.

But spoiler alert: We do solve everything and save the world by the end of this discussion.

    Carl Bogan

    Carl Bogan

Artificial intelligence has been a running theme on the podcast this year, and I couldn’t think of a better person to talk shop about this with than the one and only Carl Bogan. Through his studio, Myster Giraffe, he’s created viral mashups that have racked up millions of views across social media.

Carl spoke a bit about his experiences as a visual effects artist, and then we went into a deep discussion about all things synthetic media — generative AI, deepfakes, media literacy, government regulations…you name it. But we didn’t just geek out about that! Carl told his story about how he got interested in visual effects, what motivates him, and where he wants his work to go in the future. This episode will definitely give you some food for thought!

Michael Osterrieder, CEO and founder of vAIsual, discusses how generative AI is disrupting the stock media industry

Michael Osterrieder, CEO and founder of vAIsual, discusses how generative AI is disrupting the stock media industry

Today’s guest is the co-founder and CEO of vAIsual, the company pioneering the use of generative AI to create synthetic stock media. All of those photos you see online and in print publications of people promoting products usually are human models posing in generic ways. Their pictures are sold by companies like Getty Images in marketplaces that are inefficient and limited in scope.

Michael Osterrieder and his partner Nico are legends in the world of stock media who realized there’s a better way. They created what they call an algorithmic camera and launched vAIsual last year to scratch their own catch. Michael is a serial entrepreneur and photographer based in Budapest and he’s out to test the limits of generative AI.

    Listen and learn:

    1. How growing up listening to heavy metal inspired Michael's career in visual media
    2. What are the challenges of using generative AI to create synthetic stock images of people
    3. How visual media content creation has evolved
    4. The ethics of generative AI
    5. What Michael describes as "the biggest art heist in history"
    6. How vAIsual extends human photos using machine vision and human labeling
    7. Can an AI be the owner of copyrighted material it produces?
    8. What is the definition of consciousness?

Algorithms, Synths, and the Modeling Agency of the Future

Algorithms, Synths, and the Modeling Agency of the Future

    Summary

Imagine a world where a creative director walks over to a workstations and says “We need a family, two parents and two kids, sitting down playing a game together.” The person at the workstation punches a few keys, adjusts a few things, and boom, out comes a unique image that is exactly what the creative director asked for. Not a mock up, not a set of casting photos. The complete image, ready for use because you already own the license. You paid to license the technology, the algorithm that uses an ever growing library of hundreds of thousands of images (which also have been properly licensed) to generate this unique imagery. Our guest for this episode, Mark Milstein is Chief Operating Officer of a company called vAIsual and with the tech they’ve developed you may not have to imagine this world much longer.

    Key Takeaways

    • vAIsual is a company that has created an algorithm and interface that creates entirely synthetic "models." These people do not exist in the real world, and are available for licensing without the legal considerations that come with hiring a real world model.
    • This technology can and will manifest in a lot of ways - SaaS, PaaS, and white label services are all in the future of this technology.
    • vAIsual shoots hundreds of thousands of images of real people every year. These individuals have signed model releases that release the rights of their biometrics to the company in order to be used as reference for the generations of synths.
    • The e-commerce photographer of the future may become something more of a synthographer, able to leverage their skills to generate content exactly in line with the creative brief.
    • This technology could allow for the extreme localization of content, allowing global brands to easily represent the various demographics they serve.

Synthetic Media: AI, Digital Humans & Deep Fakes (How It Will Change Hollywood): Interview with Victor Riparbelli, CEO of Synthesia

Synthetic Media: AI, Digital Humans & Deep Fakes (How It Will Change Hollywood): Interview with Victor Riparbelli, CEO of Synthesia

Prepare for your mind to be blown. If you aren't familiar with so-called "synthetic media," you need to be. Synthetic media in all its forms - AI-driven digital humans, virtual beings, deep fakes - will transform Hollywood (and our lives). They already are. But you haven't seen anything yet. Fearless media-tech innovator and entrepreneur Victor Riparbelli, CEO of Synthesia (one of the leading innovators in this new AI-driven video world), joins me to discuss Synthesia's technology today - and where synthetic media will go in the next ten years. This all raises questions about the meaning of "creativity" and the impact on the creative community (and impacts on our lives). What happens to the "soul" of creativity when all of us can create Hollywood quality movies from our bedrooms - and when real human actors are no longer needed to play the leading roles?  We discuss it all in this fascinating live CREATV University discussion. Deepfakes

    Deepfakes

On this episode of TMWYK we’re looking at the emerging technology known as Deep Fakes AKA Synthetic Media. This technology could be used to put your face into your favorite movie or for something more nefarious like making it seem like a political figure said something when they really did not. We’ll tell you a bit about it’s origins and science behind how it they are created, share some examples you can look up, and Michael and I will draft 5 deepfakes that Michael and I would like to create if we had unlimited deepfake capabilities. I promise you this is really us and it always will be, welcome to Tell Me What You Know.

    Oneindig creatieve machines

    Oneindig creatieve machines
