An Unexpected Battle Over Banning Caste Discrimination

An Unexpected Battle Over Banning Caste Discrimination

California is poised to become the first state to outlaw discrimination based on a person’s caste. The system of social stratification, which dates back thousands of years, has been outlawed in India and Nepal for decades.

Amy Qin, a correspondent who covers Asian American communities for The Times, explains why so many believe a prejudice that originated on the other side of the globe now requires legal protection in the U.S.  — and why so many are equally convinced that it would be a bad idea.

Guest: Amy Qin, a national correspondent covering Asian American communities for The New York Times.

    Background reading:

    • The bill, recently passed by the California State Legislature, has led to intense debate among South Asian immigrants.
    • Meena Kotwal, a Dalit journalist, started a news outlet focused on marginalized groups in India, hoping that telling their stories would help improve their lives.

Ep. 829 - Kaepernick Says NFL Players Are Slaves But He Still Wants To Be One

Today on the Matt Walsh Show, race hustlers Colin Kaepernick and Ibram X Kendi both thoroughly embarrassed themselves over the weekend, exposing the emptiness and absurdity of their worldviews. It was a bad weekend for race hustlers in general, and we will revel in their self-immolation today. Also, Democrats in Virginia have all of the momentum going against them heading into the election on Tuesday, so they decided to resort to some good old fashioned fraud. And a Southwest Airlines pilot allegedly says "Let's go Brandon!" over the intercom on the plane, and this is apparently a crisis. Plus, rumors are swirling about Joe Biden's meeting with the pope. I feel duty-bound to discuss those rumors today.

    Starlight Tours

    Starlight Tours
In January 2000, the bodies of two First Nations men were found frozen in a remote area of Saskatoon, Canada. It was a place where nobody walked, especially in the winter. And then, a man named Darrell Night came forward and said he had been dropped off by police on the outskirts of town, but he had made it back alive. We speak with former police officer Ernie Louttit and reporter Dan Zakreski about the deaths of Neil Stonechild, Lawrence Wegner, and Rodney Naistus, and “starlight tours” within the Saskatoon Police Service.
