Janice Kapp Perry has composed 3,000 songs and hymns beloved by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Jesse is a country singer and songwriter from Hastings, Michigan. He grew up  in Hastings and was fortunate to be able to spend much of his time in the woods and on the water, which is where most of his inspiration comes from.

Sleekcast, 2 kausi, Suuret IT-johtajat ja ajattelijat, Ilkka Niemi, Software Sauna Croatia & Macedonia. Ilkka vetää ohjelmistokonsultointifirmaa nimeltä Software Sauna Kroatiassa.  Siviilissä Ilkka harrastaa voimailua, golfia ja yleisesti liikuntaa, sekä penkkiurheilua. Purjehduskärpänen on iskenyt Adrianmeren rannalla. Aiemmin Ilkka veti Solteqin bisneskehitystä Puolassa ja lomareissulla Kroatiassa ihastui ja tutustui maahan.

Yrityksen +30 tekijää ovat lähes 10 eri kaupungissa. Asiakkuuksia on esim. Suomessa, Ruotsissa, Hollannissa ja Saksassa. Ilkka kokee pohjoismaiden olevan kotimarkkinaa. Suomalaisen silmin Software Sauna on suomalaisjohtoinen it-konsultointifirma, joka tekee englanniksi ja etänä. Ajatuksena oli jalkauttaa suomalainen työntekijä- ja johtamiskulttuuri Kroatiaan ja palaute tästä on ollut hyvin positiivista. Läpinäkyvyys, matala hierarkia, työntekijöistä välittäminen ja rakentava palaute ovat tekijämarkkinassa selkeä kilpailuvaltti. Asiakkuuspuolella myyntivaltit riippuvat täysin asiakkaan tarpeista. Suomeen päin Kroatiasta saa kustannusvivun ja Keski-Eurooppaan päin skandinavinen laatu sekä kulttuuri ovat valtteja.

Nyt 4v myöhemmin Ilkka on yhä tyytyväinen Software Saunan perustamiseen. Korona toi oman kriisinsä, mutta lopulta pandemia helpotti etätyön myymistä. Asiakkaiden silmät aukesivat, ettei työtä tarvitse tehdä 5pv/viikko Pasilasta. Ukrainan kriisi taas katkaisi koodin tuonnin Venäjältä ja Valko-Venäjältä, mikä muuttaa osaltaan Euroopan ja koko maailmankin IT-skeneä. IT-alan kova kysyntä rohkaisee tekijöitä siirtymään freelanceriksi, mikä taas kasvattaa tarvetta friikkuvälittäjille. Markkinan kehittyessä firmojen pitää siis kehittyä mukana. Ilkan kokemus friikuista on että hekään eivät ole pelkän rahan perässä vaan etsivät juuri itselleen hyvää projektia, asiakkuutta ja työnantajaa.

Yrityksen perustamiseen Ilkka sai paljon neuvoja muilta startup-yrittäjiltä. Erityisesti rohkeus yrittää on välittynyt koska “tuokin pystyy”. Ilkka tuntee ylpeyttä niin jokaisesta uudesta työntekijästä kuin asiakkaastakin. Kasvu ei ole helppoa eikä itsestään selvyys. Myös maantieteellinen laajentuminen niin Suomeen kuin Makedoniaan tuntuu hyvältä.

Podcastissa vihjaillaan Saunalla aloittavan myyjä myös Suomessa. Tämä realisoitui elokuun 2022 alusta kun Joona Komulainen aloitti Suomen liiketoimintajohtajana. Paikalliseen front-officeen siis panostetaan, vaikka koodi onkin kansainvälistä. Tämä auttaa myös asiakkaita, jotka kasvattavat omaa IT-kyvykkyyttä, kun heitä voidaan konsultoida läheltä.

IT-alan Ilkka näkee yhä isona juttuna. Pandemia pakotti joka yrityksen panostamaan digitaaliseen läsnäoloon ja tämä kasvattaa alaa entisestään.

Sleekcast, Kausi 2, Suuret IT-johtajat ja ajattelijat, Harri Sieppi - Witted Oyj. 

Harri on kotoisin Rovaniemeltä. Tosi lappalaisten mielestä Rovaniemi on Etelä-Suomea. Harri lähti heti aikuistuttuaan Etelään. Vaihtoehtoina olivat Oulu ja Helsinki, joista Harri päätti mennä perille saakka, eli Helsinkiin. Siviilissä Harri asuu Lauttasaaressa, harrastaa lenkkeilyä ja hiihtoa (Espoossa), sekä pyörittää perhe-elämää.

Harrilla on levoton mieli, jota hän rauhoittaa kirjoittamalla ajatuksia ja ideoita ylös. Talendin erilainen tulokulma tietotyökonsultointiin oli yksi tällainen ajatus. Harri sparrasi ajatusta Laurin kanssa, joka lupasi hankkia idealle rahoituksen Reaktorin perustajilta. Talented perustettiin 2016 muutama kuukausi ennen kuin Harrin esikoinen syntyi. Tämä todellinen ruuhkavuosiasetelma ei ollut hyvä, mutta siitä selvittiin. Talented parantaa yritysten taitoja. Tätä tehdään monilla tavoilla konsultoimalla ja myymällä osaamista asiakkaille. Tätä ongelmatiikkaa ratkaistaessa on luotu tuhansien osaajien verkosto, perustettu Mavericks provisiopalkkakonsultointiyritys.

Witted Oyj:n tarina palaa ajassa muutaman vuoden taaksepäin kun pohdittiin Talented konsernin tulevaisuutta. Yritys kasvaa orgaanisesti hienosti. Kasvu nähdään tärkeänä yritykselle, koska se auttaa tarjoamaan enemmän mahdollisuuksia sekä työntekijöille että asiakkaille. Samoin nähtiin että markkinassa on vähän keskikokoisia yhtiöitä. Markkinassa on pieniä ja isoja yhtiöitä, mutta keskikokoiset eivät pärjää. Pörssilistauksessa nähtiin monta etua; osakkeesta tulee kauppaväline yrityskauppoihin, tytäryritysten yhdistäminen emoon ja seuraavaan kokoluokkaan siirtyminen ja luodaan samalla yhtenäinen laadukas brändi sekä asiakkaille että työntekijämarkkinaan.

Henkilöstölle pörssilistautumisessa tärkeintä oli yrityksen läpinäkyvyyden säilyttäminen. First Northin säännöissäkin listataan sama läpinäkyvyysvaatimus. Tämän läpinäkyvyyden korostamiseksi jo Witted listautumisprosessin aikana päätettiin tehdä blogia ja podcastia  Tällaisessa projektissa kannattaa listata edut ja haitat. Jo nyt Harri kuitenkin kokee, että he ovat kohottaneet profiiliaan selkeästi pörssilistaus-projektin myötä.

IT-ala on mennyt parempaan suuntaan. Hankeet onnistuvat paremmin, ymmärretään mahdollisuudet ja tiedostetaan  mitä IT:llä halutaan saavuttaa. Harri kutsuu IT:n ostamisen muuttaneita yrityksiä suunnannäyttäjiksi. Yritykset, kuten Reaktor, Futurice, Vincit, Solita ja Gofore. Nyt kun yritykset ymmärtävät IT:n mahdollisuudet ja kilpailuedun, niin yritykset ovat alkaneet panostamaan IT:hen. Tämä luo IT-alaan “talent war”:in.

IT-talon tulee opetella toimimaan yhteistyössä ja harkita erikoistumista. Erikoistumista voi sitten tehdä mitä erilaisimmilla tavoilla. Voi keskittyä tiettyyn asiakaskuntaan, voi keskittyä tiettyyn teknologiaan tai voi keskittyä tiettyyn työntekijäprofiiliin. Voi ajatella että globalisaatio tulee vielä rikkomaan rajoja siitä kuka ja mistä IT:tä hankkii. Pandemian luoma markkinahäiriö ainakin vahvisti tämän globalisaatiosiirtymän hiljaista signaalia tuomalla esimerkiksi jenkkiyritykset vahvemmin skandinaviaan. Samalla työtä pyritään kuitenkin koordinoimaan yhä entistä fiksummin huomioiden aikavyöhykkeet ja etäisyydet.

IT-ala on yhä tulevaisuuden ala. IT-järjestelmiä on yhä enemmän koko ajan, ja tämän myötä on yhä enemmän ylläpidettävää ja päivitettävää.

Tänään Sleekcastin "Suuret IT-alan ajattelijat ja johtajat" -kauden vieraana on Mavericks Software Oy:n perustaja ja toimitusjohtaja Jouni Jaakkola.  Jounilla on kotona 5 ja 8 vuotiaat lapset, joiden hoidosta alkaa vähitellen nyt vapautumaan resursseja.  Mutta tilanteen tasoittamiseksi he ostivat omakotitalon, jota nyt rempataan. Jos aikaa olisi, niin Jouni harrastaisi golfia. Ehkä ensi kesänä sitten taas 😀

Mavericks on 2019 perustettu, helsinkiläislähtöinen kokeneiden IT-konsulttien provisiopalkkayritys. Mavericksin kasvu on ollut hyvää ja yrityksessä on jo lähes 100 työntekijää. Mavericksin mainetta kuvaa hyvin, että IT-alalla  provisiopalkkamallista käytetään usein nimitystä "Mavericks- malli". 2022 alussa Mavericks meni pörssiin osana Witted Megacorp Oyj:ta. 

Provisiopalkkamalli on äärimmäisen tasa-arvoinen, koska palkka määräytyy suoraan asiakastyön, ei työntekijän ominaisuuksien, perusteella. Tällä mallilla kyetään maksamaan selkeästi markkinatasoa korkeampaa palkkaa ja toisaalta käydään avointa keskustelua asiantuntijoiden kanssa seuraavasta asiakastoimeksiannosta. Palkkakeskustelu on suoraviivainen, koska palkka määrittyy suoraan asiakkaan maksaman tuntihinnan perusteella. Neuvottelu käydään siis suoraan asiakkaan kanssa. Provisiopalkka -skenessä Mavericks on tehnyt toiminnasta valtavirtaa ja he ovat markkinoineet mallia hyvin aktiivisesti. Mallia on ollut myös helppo markkinoida, koska mallilla on mahdollista maksaa tasa-arvoisesti todella kovaa palkkaa. Mavericks mallilla voi sanoa olevansa “IT-alan Robin Hood”. 

Mavericksin provisiomallista työntekijät eivät lähde enää toiseen konsultointiyritykseen. Malli on siis täydellinen konsultointimalli kokeneelle konsultoijalle. Konsultit kuitenkin toisinaan lähtevät tuoteyrityksiin ns. aidan toiselle puolelle.

Mavericksin idea lähti ajatuksesta, että Talentedin freelancer välityksen ja Reaktor, Vincit tai Gofore tyylisten Great Place to Work -työpaikkojen välissä ei ollut vaihtoehtoa. Korona nosti etätyön valtavirraksi, joka etäännytti ihmiset fyysisistä työpaikoista, jolloin Great Place to Work -tarjoomaa on ollut vaikea aidosti ylläpitää. Näin provisiopalkkaan keskittyvä malli on muodostunut konsulteille erityisen houkuttelevaksi.

IT-alalla on paljon muutoksia. Konsultin ja asiakkaan suhde on muuttunut. Konsulttitaloilla ei ole enää niin suuri rooli työnantajana ja inhouse tekeminen kiinnostaa konsultteja nykyään enemmän. Perinteisillä yrityksillä on ollut haasteita yrityskulttuurin kanssa verrattuna GPTW -yrityksiin, mutta opit ovat vähitellen menneet perille. Etätyö on lisääntynyt ja tämän myötä Europpalaiset, Aasialaiset ja Amerikkalaiset yritykset ovat myös tulleet Suomen markkinaan. Osaajasota on kuumaa IT-alalla. Talenttimarkkina ratkeaa siihen, missä IT-osaajat haluavat olla töissä. Tässä kuitenkin toistuu sama aaltoliike kuin yritystenkin kanssa, että vuorotellen inhouse tekemistä lisätään ja sitten taas outsourcetaan.

IT-alalla palkat suhteessa käytyyn koulun määrään ovat todella kovat. Kysyntä osaajista on yhä kovempaa. Ala tarjoaa jatkuvasti monipuolisempia työtehtäviä. Kyseessä on yhä tulevaisuuden ala!

Tyler Cowen, an American economist, columnist, blogger, and author, was supposed to come on to talk about his new book, but before that, we had to talk about the pressing issues on hand. The Fed, the inflation, and possibly the recession! Of course, Tyler is cautiously optimistic about all of it!

Then we went on and talk about his new book, Talent: How to Identify Energizers, Creatives, and Winners Around the World! What is talent, and how do we identify one? Talent is no longer just better at something than anyone else. Nowadays, talent is more than that! Talent is as Tyler put it, able to identify the social structure that you're in, and figure out how to fit in!

In this episode of the "In Black and White" podcast, hosts Dr. Terrance Dean and Scot Kirk talk to Dr. Donna Ford, distinguished professor in the College of Education and Human Ecology at Ohio State University, about school programs designed for gifted students and why many children of color are missing out.

Ford said too often Black and Brown students are far more likely to be overlooked and excluded for gifted programs compared to white students. She also said teachers need to have higher expectations for all the children in their classrooms regardless of the students' backgrounds. 

Ford also discussed how the COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately impacted students of color, exacerbating already existing inequalities in our education system.
