    Gather Shoppe Brings Artists Together

    Gather Shoppe Brings Artists Together

Our guest today is a hero in the Bloomington, Indiana community of artists.

Armored with her hand crafted leather notebooks, she started by venturing out and attempting to make a living as an artist.  As so many heroes do, she experienced perils, hardship, and moments of doubt.  Then she realized that she should band together a collaborative community of artists.  Ultimately, she started a brick and mortar store bringing together all of their work into one location.  Talia Halliday owner of Gather Shoppe, a retail art store in downtown Bloomington Indiana, is a purveyor of art and crafts.  She’s a leader who has rallied every artist together in a epic battle of art versus evil.  And she set down her sword to take a quick moment and tell her story on this episode of Scratch.

Special thanks to Talia Halliday for taking the time to share the Gather story with us

    Mentioned in the episode:

    Rocky IV-VI / Raquel Stecher

    Rocky IV-VI / Raquel Stecher

Raquel Stecher once again joins James on the podcast to complete their conversation about the Rocky series with bits and baubles about Rocky IV, Rocky V, and Rocky Balboa. How much of a role does nostalgia play in the enjoyment of the Rocky films? And does that even matter when sitting down to enjoy a film franchise? As we weave our way through the decline of Rocky, we talk Dolph Lundgren's unholy bench press, the inexplicable creative decisions behind Rocky V, and the sweet and sentimental coda to the franchise. We play the inaugural "Hot Minute of Cinema Shame" game and wax romantic about training montages.

    Let's face it.

We've ALL sent a 16 paragraph email and that moment after we've  hit the send button on this potentially life-changing email, we've wondered silently to ourselves:

"Should I have sent that? Was that a little too much?"

(Spoiler: YES, IT WAS TOO MUCH, NOW I WANT TO THROW MY LAPTOP LIKE A DISCUS INTO A LAKE)

I'm so selfishly excited about this episode of Become More Compelling Radio that I can barely contain myself.

My guest Talia Koren (@thetalillama) and I talk about how to reach out to influencers in a way that respects their time and makes it 10x more likely that you'll receive a response.

This is especially helpful if you want to:

    • Pitch media to get your side business off the ground.
    • Get a new job in a new field.
    • Reach out to an expert and ask for advice.

The skill set of being able to reach out to people in an effective way is a force multiplier for your life. Learn it and use it.

    In this episode you'll learn:
12:26 - How most people approach media outreach and what you can do instead.
24:10 - How to reach out to individual influencers.
41:22 - The structure of a good outreach email. (Subject line, body, PS)

Talia also has a free resource for BMC listeners: 3 Teardowns of standard media pitches.

    Rocky with Justin Golak

    Rocky with Justin Golak

    Movie Meltdown - Episode 369

This week we are joined by our special guest co-host comedian Justin Golak, as we discuss one of his favorite movies - Rocky. We look at not just the movie itself, but also it's impact on pop culture - and just how much we actually remember based on how much Rocky has seeped into the public consciousness. Plus we also look at how this first installment fits into the long-running series that will continue over the next 40 years.

And as we discuss Stallone-adjacent characters, we also mention... comedy or baseball, cable the way it used to be, arm wrestling is the thing, reading comprehension, Ghostbusters 2, organized crime, garblyness, it's very different going back and rewatching it now... having not seen it in years, how do you fight you, creating a rig for the scene, the sub-genre of boxing movies, Survivor, escaping Cleveland, music video culture, Cobra, drinking raw eggs, on VHS taped from TV, I want to be better, Thunderlips, being weird and awkward, Over the Top, three pages of dialogue in ten seconds of body language, spattered with training, running with your girlfriend up the stairs, at every turn... he makes a different choice, Copland, going heel, it's essentially an origin story... but you didn't know that if you didn't know there's be sequels, novelizations, outsourcing the property, Apollo Creed, being literal, Irwin Winkler, forceps, Ruskies, office sign dialogue, Batman Begins, this is like a thing everyone will do forever now, losing the right way, getting your hands bloody, that's a real person and all art is drug-fueled from the beginning of time.

Spoiler Alert: Spoilers for Rocky... and the entire franchise. You have been warned.

"I'm a huge fan... it's the only thing I geek out about... it's like my Star Wars."

Episode 9: Rocky IV and Masters of the Universe (Dawn of the Dolph)

Episode 9: Rocky IV and Masters of the Universe (Dawn of the Dolph)
It seems a shame that at the dawn of his career that the very intelligent, athletic, and talented Dolph Lundgren was handed roles that didn't fully utilize his arsenal. However, he did the best he could with what he had, and we couldn't be more pleased. This particular evening, under the flickering lights of the all-night Nighthawks Cafe, Matt and Trevor discuss two films from Lundgren's early career: ROCKY IV and THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE. One a generation-defining exercise in American propaganda during the Cold War, and the other a notorious attempt to cash-in on a commercial property that would help to bankrupt a production house.
Full disclosure, we chose two Dolph Lundgren movies from our past, as a way to satisfy a listener request. Unfortunately, after re-watching these films, we feel that Dolph might have gotten the raw end of this deal, since these movies truly fail to encompass a truly remarkable human being. So, we'll probably be seeing a DAY OF THE DOLPH episode sometime down the road. We'd like to give the man his due... Because, man. We don't want this dude angry with us.

The 95th edition of the T100P features the ultimate underdog story before the series turned into amusing self-parody. Sly Stallone's signature role made him a huge star, something he wouldn't have achieved if he didn't write his own script with such authenticity. He was a DIY kind of guy.
