The Politics of Fighting for Black Students (Ft. Councilmember Isaiah Thomas)

The Politics of Fighting for Black Students (Ft. Councilmember Isaiah Thomas)

Isaiah Thomas discusses the intersection of education and politics, emphasizing the need for increased funding and support for schools.

He shares his personal journey in education, highlighting the impact of mentorship and programs like Freedom Schools. Thomas emphasizes the importance of teachers and mentors in shaping the lives of young people and calls for higher wages for educators.

He also discusses the role of the federal government in education and the need for systemic changes in how schools are funded. Thomas concludes by urging listeners to participate in elections and support candidates who prioritize education.

    Takeaways

    • Mentorship and programs like Freedom Schools can have a profound impact on young people, shaping their future aspirations and instilling a sense of service.
    • Teachers and mentors have the power to make a lasting impression on students, not just through academic instruction, but also by how they make students feel.
    • The intersection of education and politics is crucial, as elected officials have the power to allocate resources and make decisions that directly impact schools and students.
    • Higher wages for educators are necessary to attract and retain talented individuals in the teaching profession.
    • The federal government should provide more funding and support for education, including addressing capital deficits and investing in innovative approaches to learning.
    • Changing the funding model for schools, particularly by increasing resources and making education a top priority, can lead to better outcomes for students.
    • Individuals should participate in elections and support candidates who prioritize education and are committed to improving the education system.

The WORST Non-Teacher Advice Ever Given

All aboard the "Hot Mess Teacher Express"! We Choo-choo-ing our way into another funny and informative episode where Jess Smith derails some of the WORST advice non-teachers have ever given.

Ever been told to "just quit" if you're not feeling the teaching vibes? Or how about the classic, "Just be stricter!" to magically fix all student behavior issues? Jess dives deep into these pearls of non-wisdom.

And hey, have you tried not spending money on your class? Or maybe just making teaching more 'fun'? Oh, and while you're at it, why not get a side hustle to cover the bills? Because, apparently, that's easier than just paying teachers more! 🤣

Hop in as we journey through the wacky world of non-teacher advice and discuss the, uh, "unique" solutions the public thinks we educators should adopt. Spoiler: We might need a few laughs to get through this one!

Didactic Cafe: We Need to Talk About Teacher Pay

Didactic Cafe: We Need to Talk About Teacher Pay

It has been said that if you have not seen a 20% pay raise over the last two years, you are behind the cost of living increase.  I don't know of a single teacher who has seen anywhere near that.

Educators have notoriously been underpaid, but the problem is reaching an apex of danger.  What happens when quality teachers cannot afford to stay?

    We will all suffer.

Politics Wednesday: Greg O'Connor and Nicola Willis clash over teacher settlement

Labour MP for Ōhāriu Greg O'Connor and National Party Deputy Leader Nicola Willis join Nick Mills for Politics Wednesday.

This week they debate Michael Wood's temporary suspension from his position as Transport Minister, new vaping laws, and primary teachers voting to accept the latest Ministry of Education collective agreement offer.

Chris Abercrombie: PPTA Acting President on the upcoming teacher strike

Chris Abercrombie: PPTA Acting President on the upcoming teacher strike

With less than a week to go until a nation-wide teacher mega-strike, unions say the potential to call it off is in the Government's hands.

The primary and secondary school unions have both voted on industrial action after faltering negotiations.

It means that more than 50-thousand educators will be picketing on Thursday.

PPTA Acting President Chris Abercrombie told Heather du Plessis-Allan that the offered payrise was a lump sum of six-thousand dollars over two years.

Abercrombie says any resolution before Thursday requires the Government meeting their demands.

        2. It seemed revolutionary to me anyway to write articles like this in 2019, and now I’m on a reasonably popular podcast about this very type of thing. If these states were up in 2020, they’ll be up in 2024. And we will give way more fucks than we did in 2020.

Dr. Kelli Joseph: Cutting the Budget in Three Years

Dr. Kelli Joseph: Cutting the Budget in Three Years

When Dr. Kelli Joseph began her superintendency at St. Helena Parish School District, she had her work cut out for her. The Louisiana district was facing a multitude of challenges, from a $1.5 million budget deficit to a desegregation order to a fight for local control. The problems looked almost insurmountable—but Joseph and her team were determined not only to solve them but to grow in the process. And that’s just what they did.

Since Joseph’s start in 2011, St. Helena has passed two tax increases—the first in 20 years. They’ve boosted teacher pay by more than 25%, balanced their budget, and taken back their middle school from the Recovery School District. Now, Joseph is Louisiana’s current Superintendent of the Year.

In this episode, we talk with Dr. Joseph about her dedication to progress in the midst of a crisis and how she and her team balanced cuts with growth.

    Episode 025 -- Tibbens -- COVID-19 & Subs, Pay, Appreciation, & Grades

    Episode 025 -- Tibbens -- COVID-19 & Subs, Pay, Appreciation, & Grades

This episode of the ClassCast Podcast features host and teacher Ryan Tibbens discussing four topics in relation to COVID-19 and school closures: 1) the need for more substitute teachers and blended learning, 2) teacher pay and new responsibilities, 3) Teacher Appreciation Week 2020, and 4) Grading.  In each section, Tibbens identifies problems or concerns that all community stakeholders should consider and offers insights and solutions.  In Part 3, Teacher Appreciation Week 2020, he takes a more personal approach than most ClassCast clips by thanking many of his own teachers and explaining their impacts on his life.
(Note: The four clips cut from this episode do contain some additional commentary and information that did not fit into this full episode's upload. Most content is the same, but additional details, particularly in Part 3, are available in the highlight clip.)

    Clip 025.2 -- Tibbens -- COVID-19 & Teacher Pay

    Clip 025.2 -- Tibbens -- COVID-19 & Teacher Pay

This clip from ClassCast Podcast Ep.025 features host Ryan Tibbens addressing the current problems facing teachers' compensation, largely resulting from the COVID-19 social distancing and business closures which seem likely to set off a recession. Many plans for reopening schools next year call for staggered schedules, more teacher cleaning duties, increased technology dependence, blending learning, and more -- and that's not even considering the health risks many teachers will face. Teachers, school boards, and tax-payers should all be cognizant of the pressures on teacher compensation and how those changes may affect both the short and long-term strength of the profession.  With budget cuts coming, most teachers remember pay freezes, furloughs, and other problems from a decade ago; but the current changes in education may require different administrative and fiscal plans if teachers are going to be asked to do even more in the course of providing education and safety for the nation's youth.

The End of Average Teacher Salary at CCSD Could Be A Utopia - Or a Nightmare

The End of Average Teacher Salary at CCSD Could Be A Utopia - Or a Nightmare

Nevada Succeeds' Brent Husson says schools with lower income kids are paying more for their teachers than schools in wealthier areas. It's called Average Teacher Salary, and the new Nevada education funding formula may tie teacher pay to "actual" salary. That, says Husson, means a possible reshuffling of teachers.

He also says it's the way schools should be - with a mixture of experienced teachers mentoring newer teachers in a collaborative atmosphere.

Currently, Husson explains in the first half of this Nevada Voice podcast, when schools pay teachers based on an "average," the schools with higher paid teachers aren't charged what their staff actually costs. But schools with lower paid teachers - who tend to be less experienced - are charged more in their budgets than what their teachers make.

    Husson says that's plainly unfair.

Former CCSD asst. superintendent and interim CFO, Eva White (who was a finalist for the superintendent's job last year) says that there have been schools in Vegas where experienced teachers mentored brand new teachers. And it can work, if schools are willing to do it. But she tempers Husson's vision of utopian, collaborative school cultures by point out the hurdles the district will need to jump in order to get there.
