294: RoxCodes — Building Dreams and Letting Go

294: RoxCodes — Building Dreams and Letting Go

Rox (@RoxCodes) recently sold his SaaS thumbnailtest.com. But he's pretty conflicted about the sale. What was promised to be a moment of joy and celebration quickly turned into doubt, grief, and confusion.

Today, I talk to my friend Rox about the emotional complexity of giving up something you hold dear, how to move forward, and what it means to level up even further after a successful exit. Rox opens up and talks candidly about the weight on his shoulders, the pressure, and the expectations.

"Surrender" is the operative term here. If you ever wondered just how nuanced the sale of a business can be and how a founder has to struggle their way through it, this one's for you.

The OpenAI Controversy: Unveiling the Ethical Dilemmas and Potential Threats in AI

The OpenAI Controversy: Unveiling the Ethical Dilemmas and Potential Threats in AI
Good morning from OWITH.ai: the podcast that gives you only what's important to hear in AI and tech world. Today, we will discuss the controversies surrounding OpenAI, a prominent artificial intelligence company.OpenAI has recently come under fire for its partnership with Axel Springer, with allegations of illegal use of authors' work and even The New York Times (NYT) to train its language models. These actions have raised concerns about the company's ethics and data acquisition methods, as consent seems to be lacking.Furthermore, OpenAI has been involved in multiple lawsuits, including one with Microsoft, accusing them of copyright infringement. The lawsuit claims that OpenAI copied millions of articles without paying licensing fees, potentially damaging the relationship between media organizations like NYT and their readership. The impact of OpenAI's actions on American media and democracy is a major concern. If OpenAI continues to use stolen data to compete directly with media outlets like NYT, it could undermine the quality of news and influence elections. Additionally, the rise of AI-generated content poses a challenge for tech giants like Google, who struggle to keep up with its sophistication. The influence of OpenAI's co-founder, Sam Altman, is also under scrutiny. Altman's close ties with Microsoft and his return to OpenAI have cast a shadow on the company's reputation. Ongoing investigations by the UK Competition and Markets Authority into the partnership between Microsoft and OpenAI add to these concerns. Accusations of mass copyright infringement and deceptive practices are alarming for the development of AI.Accountability is crucial in this situation, not just for Microsoft, Altman, and OpenAI, but for various industries as well. Proprietary models trained without permission and based on illegal practices can have significant consequences, including for coding. The profit-driven nature of OpenAI's operations and the ethical concerns associated with using illegal or inappropriate training data must be addressed. In conclusion, the controversies surrounding OpenAI raise important questions about ethics, accountability, and the impact of AI on society. It is crucial for companies like OpenAI to prioritize transparency and responsible practices to ensure a positive and sustainable future for AI.

    Episode Introduction

Welcome to another episode of the Redefining Society Podcast, where your host Marco Ciappelli plunges into the depths of the complex, dynamic relationship between technology, privacy, and cybersecurity. This episode takes you on a thrilling journey, narrating the story of Tom Kemp, an active participant in the tech industry, with investments across privacy, cybersecurity, and consumer and enterprise-oriented companies.

Kemp's involvement isn't limited to just business; he's been heavily engaged in the realm of public policy, using his expertise to shape laws like California's Proposition 24, the California Privacy Rights Act, and the California Delete Act. He's even penned a book, Containing Big Tech, which examines the implications of the unchecked growth of tech giants on our privacy and security.

This compelling conversation traverses through multiple layers of the privacy and cybersecurity sphere. Marco and Kemp address the game of "whack a mole" played by lawmakers trying to regulate a rapidly evolving industry. They discuss the path-breaking GDPR law in Europe and question if the United States is lagging or catching up with international norms.

Kemp also delves into a sobering exploration of how our personal data is weaponized against us, leading to identity theft, cyber attacks, and even manipulation of our behaviors. And perhaps most disturbingly, how the accumulation of our data can potentially violate our Fourth Amendment rights and could be used to discriminate against us.

Marco and Kemp challenge you, the listener, to think deeply about how data is collected and used. They reveal the intricate webs woven by data brokers and tech companies that use "dark patterns" to lure consumers into sharing their information. The conversation scrutinizes the deceptive nature of agreements and asks the daunting question: can we really take back our privacy?

These thought-provoking insights are a wake-up call for consumers and businesses alike, inviting us to reflect on the inevitable risks that come alongside the undeniable benefits of technology in our society, our daily lives, and businesses. The Redefining Society Podcast dares to explore the boundaries of privacy and cybersecurity, challenging the status quo, and forging a path to a more secure future.

So tune in, soak in the insights, and join the conversation. Share this episode with your network and don't forget to subscribe to the Redefining Society Podcast. Let's redefine society together, ensuring privacy and cybersecurity for all.

    About the Book

Technology is a gift and a curse. The five Big Tech companies―Meta, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, and Google―have built innovative products that improve many aspects of our lives. But their intrusiveness and our dependence on them have created pressing threats to our civil rights, economy, and democracy.

Coming from an extensive background building Silicon Valley-based tech startups, Tom Kemp eloquently and precisely weaves together the threats posed by Big Tech:

    - the overcollection and weaponization of our most sensitive data

    - the problematic ways Big Tech uses AI to process and act upon our data

    - the stifling of competition and entrepreneurship due to Big Tech's dominant market position

This richly detailed book exposes the consequences of Big Tech's digital surveillance, exploitative use of AI, and monopolistic and anticompetitive practices. It offers actionable solutions to these problems and a clear path forward for individuals and policymakers to advocate for change. By containing the excesses of Big Tech, we will ensure our civil rights are respected and preserved, our economy is competitive, and our democracy is protected.

Momentum is building - so where now?

Momentum is building - so where now?

This week, we talk about a crucial third force in this discussion - beyond state and business: civil society - groups of citizens advocating for human and democratic rights and for the good of societies.

But, it's not easy for civil society's voice to be heard in the face of extremely powerful and notoriously secretive companies with huge budgets for lobbying and influence in very high places. Emily Hart is joined by experts from two top consumer rights organisations - one from each side of the Atlantic: Vanessa Turner of BEUC and Camila Leite Contri of the Brazilian Institute of Consumers Protection.

A global debate is coming: legislators and regulators in different parts of the world will need to adapt emerging regulatory tools and concepts to their own context and markets. What can we learn from the process of negotiations around the Digital Markets Act in Europe and how can it be replicated in other contexts? Is it even the right template? How can we weave together a global civil society to make sure that people's voices are really heard in this growing conversation?

    Big Brother vs Big Other

    Big Brother vs Big Other

The 20th century birthed ‘Big Brother’ - an omnipresent surveillance state - but the 21st century's digital surveillance capacities have created a ‘Big Other’ - online corporations watching us more closely than any state apparatus ever has - the difference is, we’ve put Big Other in our own pockets and homes.

Emily Hart is joined by Luis Fernando García, Executive Director and co-founder of Mexican digital rights organisation R3D, and Tomaso Falchetta, who leads Privacy International's global policy engagement.

They'll be digging into issues of online privacy and surveillance - how much do we even know about the data being collected on us? Why does it matter to our human rights and democracies? What can we do?

    Hope on the Horizon

    Hope on the Horizon

How do the titans of tech limit and manipulate our freedom of expression online?

Today we're talking about bringing Big Tech down to size - and using regulation to do it. Emily Hart is joined by Argentinian free speech expert Agustina del Campo and ARTICLE 19's Maria Luisa Stasi, who leads the organisation's work on law and policy for digital markets - they'll be digging into Europe's Digital Markets Act - the most ambitious legislation so far to tackle the issues of power concentration and anti-competitive behaviours in digital markets.

Emily Hart is joined by Carolina Botero of Colombian digital rights campaign Karisma and regulation expert Dr Liza Luffdal Gormsen - they'll be looking at regulation, and talking about whether the models currently emerging in Europe can work in other contexts, given the radically different factors at play.

Meta: mínus 24 procent. Amazon: mínus 19 procent. Microsoft a Alphabet: shodně mínus 8 procent. Uptime: Why time's up for mindless scrolling

If 'too much information, too little time'  is the great problem of our age, this business has a 5-minute solution.

Patrick Walker is a veteran of the 'big tech' scene having held senior positions with Facebook and YouTube. But he was moved to go it alone to address the issue of sheer volume of content, and 'hack knowledge' to provide users with briefer and more positive online experiences. Thus, Uptime was born.

In an episode full of fantastic insight and advice, Patrick talks about the importance of pausing when egos might dictate otherwise; how taking time to recruit ensures you capture people "whose purpose becomes their profession"; and having the confidence to "follow your bliss". Plus, in our latest community poll, we reveal the stress-levels of our listeners!

Unpacking Apple's health care efforts and digital health's overall maturity

Unpacking Apple's health care efforts and digital health's overall maturity

Tech giants like Apple and Alphabet, the parent company of Google, have been trying to push into health care for some time now. But pursuing health care as a business is hard. Recent news of Google reorganizing its health team and Apple struggling to create primary care services illuminate how difficult it can be for companies - even those with deep pockets and resources - to break into the health care industry.

To discuss the recent Apple news as well as the maturity of the digital health industry, Health Affairs' Jeff Byers welcomes Brian Dolan, founder of digital health news and market research publication Exits & Outcomes, to Health Affairs This Week. Dolan is a veteran journalist in the health tech space and shares his insights from his reporting on Crossover Health's partnership with Apple.
