    160. Sweet Little Lies: 3 Things to Think About Before You Tell a Lie

Our society upholds truth as a virtue, but as we strive to do the right thing in each moment, the question remains: is it ever okay to lie? In this episode of Spiritually Hungry, join us as we discuss the real truth when it comes to the lies we tell every day.

“Before you choose to tell the truth, think of yourself as the other person. If you do not, you are probably going to do more damage in your truth-telling than any benefit you are hoping to have.” – Michael Berg

Honesty and Faith: The Importance of Truth-Telling with Children about the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus

It might be controversial for some parents, but guiding your children toward a solid spiritual foundation is essential. Today I'm sharing my experiences telling my kids that Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny aren't real. As a result, it created a positive impact on my family. It's not an easy conversation to have for most parents, especially when your children are used to the gifts that come from a mythical figure. But stripping away the lies has deepened my children's faith in God and allowed us as a family to prioritize our faith over cultural norms.

It might seem like a radical episode to you, so my advice is to wait if you haven't felt compelled to tell them and pray about it. This is not a judgment. It's just my story. But if you have a conviction to tell your children or you are feeling like you're back and forth, friend, it might just be time to rip the bandaid off and stop serving the world.

So let's dive into the importance of truth-telling and prioritizing our children's faith in today's world.

“We live in a culture where truth has been devalued. Personal preference and opinion have been elevated above truth and objective reality. Beyond that, small instances of dishonesty have a tendency to lead to larger deceit… and if we are not mindful, it is easy to find ourselves being dishonest with ourselves, dishonest with others, and dishonest about others.

Gossip is often at the core of our daily dishonesty. Willingly or unwillingly, consciously or unconsciously, when we talk about others, we are often participating in a spiraling episode of dishonesty. Why do we do it? Not usually out of any malicious intent. More often than not, it’s because we simply don’t have the emotional energy to fight the battle or walk away, because we want to fit in and feel accepted, or because we don’t want to get on the wrong side of certain people. But all of this brings us to wonder how honest we are. So, let us ask ourselves three questions today:

    Am I honest with myself?
    Am I honest with others?
    Am I honest about others?

If the truth will set us free. Everything other than the truth will slowly but surely enslave us. Be mindful and take note of how honest you are with yourself and others today.”

    Telling the truth

    Telling the truth
Telling the truth sounds like a pretty boring subject. But actually, it is the most adventurous thing we do. Telling the truth means first finding the truth, and then being willing to engage with it to explore its meaning. And finally telling the truth means really telling it, with your mouth, with your body language, with your manifestations. Telling the truth to and about yourself is singularly the most effective way to open the door to the unconscious. But telling the truth is not necessarily what we think it is. Often we think that it is self-criticism, even harsh punitive criticism. We think it is self-effacement in front of others. We think it is blunt, criticism of others. The truth is, however, that telling the truth runs, much, much deeper than any of these more shallow renditions. Tune in today and find out how to tell the truth.
