“The Banshees of Cranberry” PIT@WAS 11/09/22

Tonight, your Penguins visit the Washington Capitals for what is surely “just another” must-win game, because what game isn’t, when you’re in the midst of a historical, longest-in-the-Mike-Sullivan-era, epic-ass losing streak? Do I feel better? Yep, I do. Thanks for letting me try out some words. And now that I got that off my chest, exactly what *was it* were we talking about? Oh, right. The Caps. Yeah, they convincingly defeated the Edmonton Oilers a couple nights ago, even on a night when Connor McDavid did Connor McDavid things.

So, do I expect the Penguins to go into the nation’s capital and defeat the team who sent EDM home with their tails between their legs? Nope. And don’t mistake my tone, here: I’m not giving up on these Penguins, not even for this season. Far from it. But to turn this ship around, while inserting into your lineup names like *Big Jeff Carter, Teddy Blueger, and Fillip Hallander, not to mention major D-pairing shuffling… Let’s just say I’d be happy with a game where the Pens play hard, leave it all out on the ice, and heck, I’ll even make a bit of a prediction here: Take home a loser’s point. That, to me, would be a step in the right direction. If, by hook or by crook the Penguins can eek out the W you won’t hear me complain. Longest episode notes ever? Check. My first - if inadvertent - stab at ‘writing a teeny tiny piece’ on this team, in 103 episodes? Yup. That, too.

Episode 76: Trae Crowder, Corey Ryan Forrester, Drew Morgan Interview (Middle Of Somewhere After Show)

We hope you had a chance to listen to the table read for Middle of Somewhere written by Andrew Reich (Friends) and the WellRED crew aka Trae Crowder, Corey Ryan Forrester, and Drew Morgan. In this episode, Andrew sits down with the guys for a deep dive into the development of this pilot, including an expansive conversation about some of the more controversial story ideas that the studio and network nixed. They break down how studios pair showrunners with talent, how the news cycle can affect projects for better or worse, and the challenges of getting authentic Southern characters on TV. Enjoy it and thanks for listening!

#6 - Rick Rosenthal (film director & TV producer) at White Water Films

#6 - Rick Rosenthal (film director & TV producer) at White Water Films

Rick Rosenthal (Transparent, Bad Boys, Halloween II) discusses wearing multiple hats in both film and television, and the efforts of his production company, White Water Films.

    We talk about:

    • Selling vs. Not Selling Scripts
    • Bonding in Television vs. Film
    • Producing vs. Directing in Television
    • Working on ‘Transparent’
    • Script Notes and Editing for the Long Haul in Television
    • Improvisation and Mapping Out Seasons in Television
    • “Is this Story a Movie or a Series?”
    • Today’s Movies and Budgets
    • Producing vs. Directing in Film
    • Investing in Productions and Setting Expectations
    • Balancing Film and TV Projects
    • Casting Big Names
    • Building and Maintaining Relationships

    Quotes from the show:

"You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make a duck wear a saddle. I thought that sort of summed up Hollywood well for me."

“Television needs… to sort of look at the way novels are structured and layered, and [how] things are set up and developed over time. Most television hasn’t been like that.”

“Your role as a producer… is to make sure that the ship doesn’t hit the rocks, or at the very least, doesn’t hit the rocks under full steam. Yet, at the same time, you have to give a certain amount of creative freedom to get dangerously close to the rocks.”

“Investing in the movie business is this strange combination of buying a painting and going to Las Vegas.”

“If you do good work, that’s what it’s all about. It is about good work, but it’s also about understanding the advantage of having really strong personal relationships with people.”

“…If you really care bout the process, then the outcome will take care of itself. Even if it doesn’t appear to be the outcome you want, you don’t know that outcome, that loss as it were, isn’t pushing you to a greater level of process.”
