    Episode 31: 1996 - The English Patient

On this episode of 'Revisiting the Oscars' we're headed back to the 90s for 1996 - the year of Euro 96, the release of Trainspotting and the split of the original incarnation of Take That!

On this year's episode we're treating patients who may or may not be English in The English Patient, arranging a kidnapping of our wives to collect a ransom in Fargo, maintaining deep secrets in Secrets & Lies, starting our own sports agency in Jerry Maguire and trying our hand at piano in Shine

We also discuss the differences between the US and the UK through the prism of plastic/paper bags, and we have a belting Corrie reference for you all. No spoilers!

    S01E25 - The English Patient (1996)

Welcome to Season 1 of Snubs & Dubs! This season we are covering the 69th Academy Awards, featuring the films of 1996.

On Episode 25, we're finally talking about the winner of the 69th Academy Award for Best Picture, Anthony Minghella's The English Patient. The sweeping expanses of the Sahara are the setting for a passionate love affair in this adaptation of Michael Ondaatje's novel. A badly burned man, Laszlo de Almasy (Ralph Fiennes), is tended to by a nurse, Hana (Juliette Binoche), in an Italian monastery near the end of World War II. His past is revealed through flashbacks involving a married Englishwoman (Kristin Scott Thomas) and his work mapping the African landscape. Hana learns to heal her own scars as she helps the dying man.

‘Truly, Madly, Deeply’ with ‘Model Minority’ Director and ‘ER’ Actor Lily Mariye

This week’s episode is an utter delight. We are joined by director and actor Lily Mariye to discuss Anthony Minghella’s Truly, Madly, Deeply. Both the guest and this movie could be described similarly; delightful, thoughtful, and inspiring. Lily talks about the process of casting and how she gets emotional when an actor perfectly delivers the material. She even gives April a little acting lesson and teaches her not to luxuriate in her emotions, but rather move between them and let them crash into one another. Lily elaborates on her directing strategy of taking ideas from anyone on set, even the craft services person. And lastly, she explains the deeper meaning of why she always wears lipstick when directing.
