    Day 56: Man’s First Sin (2024)

    Day 56: Man’s First Sin (2024)
Together, with Fr. Mike, we explore the nature of man’s first sin or our “freedom put to the test.” Fr. Mike unpacks the importance of us understanding that freedom is not the power to “do what we want,” but rather, the power to “do what I ought.” Though the story of the first sin is that of our first parents, Fr. Mike emphasizes that we still repeat the grave error of the first sin in our own lives by preferring our own perceived “goods” over the “goods” of our Creator and Father in heaven. Today’s readings are Catechism paragraphs 396-401. Day 54: The Fall of Man (2024)

Day 54: The Fall of Man (2024)
The Catechism introduces us to the Fall, beginning with the reality of sin and the mystery of evil. Fr. Mike highlights the fact that sin is not “a developmental flaw, a psychological weakness, a mistake, or the necessary consequence of an inadequate social structure,” but it is man saying, “not your will, but mine be done” to God. Today's readings are Catechism paragraphs 385-390. Episode 56: "Why We Need To Teach Students About Sin" with Mitchell Chase

Dr. Mitchell Chase joins Kyle to discuss the importance of teaching about the Fall to our students. Dr. Chase discusses his latest book "Short of Glory: A Biblical and Theological Exploration of the Fall." Together they encourage us not to shy away from this topic, but instead to help place it within the larger biblical narrative. Understanding the effects of the Fall and realizing our sinfulness helps us better comprehend and appreciate the grace, redemption, and justification offered through Jesus Christ.

The Garden of Eden w/ Pastor Jeff McCullough "Ground Zero"

The Garden of Eden w/ Pastor Jeff McCullough "Ground Zero"

Another great discussion! Pastor Jeff McCullough and Latter-day Saint Greg Matsen discuss the Garden of Eden.

A few months ago, I sat down with Jeff to ask him about his understanding of the Garden of Eden. It was obvious to me that this was an area that needed to be discussed and that it offers the framework to better understand many of the core differences in our theologies. We agreed to sit down and follow up on the conversation. This episode is that follow-up.

    We touch on: -

The beguiling of Eve - What does "death" mean anciently? - The Pre-Mortal World - What was the plan of God? - How does the Garden of Eden inform both God's Plan and the purpose of mankind? - At what point could Adam and Eve procreate? - The Tree of Life - The necessity for mankind to have Faith in Christ. - And much more!

The Fall / You're On the F**kin' Ride (Guest: Jessica Martin)

Performer, writer, director, and general cool human Jessica Martin sits down with us, to then take "The Fall," (2006) Based on “Yo Ho Ho,” (1981). Starring; Lee Pace, Catinca Untaru, and Justine Waddell. A fantasy/adventure gem Directed and co-written by Tarsem Singh (The Cell, Mirror Mirror), and produced (?) by Spike Jonze, and David Fincher (maybe). We get swept away in the discussion of storytelling via color coding, Lee Pace, the greatness of practical effects, and the sheer power of Blu-Ray (tm). A film that must be experienced directly to truly understand, but we take a swing.

Plot: In a hospital just outside of 1920s LA, an injured stuntman tells a fellow patient, a little girl with a broken arm, a fantastic story about 5 mythical heroes. Between his unstable mind, and her imagination, the line between fiction and reality blurs.

    Whetting Your Appetite

    Whetting Your Appetite

Desire is so fundamental to our nature that we often overlook its significance. Its guiding force. We are created - designed - to desire and to be satisfied.

Desire and satisfaction were part of Paradise before the fall. When God created the world and saw that it was good, he rested. When Adam and Eve worked the garden each day, they would stop in the evening and walk in the cool of the day beside the divine God of the Universe. And when they were hungry, they found satisfaction from taking the fruit of any tree in the garden.

    Except one, of course.

The serpent injected venom into Eve's desires and bent them toward the forbidden. Forget God and what He said, the serpent suggested, and become like him by eating from this tree.

Eve, having then entertained the idea of going against God's guidance, looked at the fruit of the tree. The Scriptures say she saw three things that she desired: she saw that the tree was good for food, pleasing to the eye, and desirable for gaining wisdom.

And so, in an attempt to satisfy those desires, she took the forbidden fruit. And ate it. And then gave some to Adam, who was standing next to her.

Adam and Eve abandoned their natural, divine provisions that would naturally meet their desires and grasped for something outside the realm of God's desire.

And yet, though we call this event the Fall - or Paradise Lost - what we find is God's desire only beginning to reveal itself. God came to the garden in the cool of the day to find Adam and Eve, desiring to walk with them. He called to them when he could not find them, desiring their presence. And once they confessed their sin, He covered their shame with animal skins that he sacrificed, desiring to relieve their shame. He handed down discipline and ejected them from the garden, but left them alive and well, desiring to continue to be a part of their lives. And the rest of Scripture is the story of God's divine pursuit - his holy desire - to win us back from doing the same thing over and over again - trying to gratify our desires with anything other than Him and His provision.

God's desire is us. And when we loosen our grip on the forbidden fruit and take our eyes off its deceptive appearances, we find that what we really desire ourselves is God. And when God's desires and ours converge, Paradise is regained.

The Transformed Life | Man Born Blind

The Transformed Life | Man Born Blind
We begin the new year with a new sermon series where we look at the impact Jesus had on the lives of people who came face to face with Him. As we study scripture, we see in John chapter 9 the story of the man born blind. And we learn that God’s eternal purposes in our sufferings are always more important than our understanding of the causes of our sufferings. In other words, Jesus cares deeply for those suffering, and He has compassion, and His purposes are eternal. We may not be able to understand why we are suffering, but we know the one who can make us whole again. We also learn about the spiritual blindness of the Pharisees and religious people and Jesus gives us a stern warning about being spiritually blind to Him. Paul David Tripp puts it this way - “Spiritual blindness isn’t like physical blindness. When you’re physically blind, you know you’re blind, so you compensate for this significant physical deficit. But spiritually blind people are not only blind, but they are also blind to their own blindness. They think they see well, so the spiritually blind person walks around with the delusion that no one has a more accurate view of himself than he does” Are you making the hurting a point of discussion? Have you given your suffering to Jesus? Do you believe that He knows you and has compassion for you? As always, we’d love to connect with you to pray for you or answer any questions, so reach out. EP 96 | Human Beings: Made in the Image of God (Our Doctrinal Statement) | Redeeming Truth

Human Beings. We teach Adam and Eve, the parents of the entire human race, were real people who were created in innocence, without sin and with the capacity, desire and mandate to glorify God in all things. All human beings, whether in the womb or out, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or level of health, are images of God and are, therefore, inherently valuable and worthy of respect and protection. All human beings begin to exist as individuals at the moment of conception. Thus, we strongly oppose abortion and euthanasia as well as all kinds of research and procedures that destroy unborn children. We teach that while the highest goal for humanity is still to glorify God, in Adam’s sin the whole human race fell, inherited the guilt of his sin and a sinful nature, becoming spiritually dead, enslaved to sin and alienated from God so that all people are now sinners both by nature, inclination, choice and action. We teach that humanity is guilty before God, completely infected by sin and incapable of saving himself from his depraved condition, leaving every human that has ever lived (except for Jesus) hopelessly lost and destined for God’s wrath for their sins. This understanding leads us to reject all concepts of universal salvation. We also teach that for those who are trusting in Jesus for their salvation, at the moment of physical death their souls go immediately to heaven and remain there in sinless, conscious bliss until their resurrection when their souls and bodies are reunited forever. For those who do not trust in Jesus for their salvation, at the moment of physical death their souls go to hell and remain there in conscious misery until their souls and bodies are reunited at their resurrection. At that time, they will be judged, found guilty and cast into the Lake of Fire, eternally separated from God in conscious punishment. We reject all forms of reincarnation, purgatory, soul sleep, spirit prison and annihilation as well as anyone remaining on earth in a different form or getting a second chance to be saved after death.
