Episode 26 - Trouble And Her Friends

Episode 26 - Trouble And Her Friends

This episode we recap and review the novel Trouble And Her Friends by Melissa Scott.  Imagine what you thought the internet would be like in 2060, but you're imagining it in 1994.  The glorious dream that died a slow death throughout the mid aughts is alive and well in this book that, though it may not get everything right, does really capture a certain vibe that some of us dearly miss. Also, it's super gay!

The High Tech Low Life Podcast is a retrospective of cyberpunk fiction across all forms of media. Film, Television, Literature, Games, and Music are all on the table. In each episode we will revisit the property, it's influences, it's prescience, and enshrine it in the chrome and neon halls of Neo Valhalla.

McKenzie Wark on Writing on Raving, Transitions, and the Techno Dancefloor

McKenzie Wark on Writing on Raving, Transitions, and the Techno Dancefloor

McKenzie Wark is an Australian born writer, critical theory professor, and trans-femme techno raver currently living in NYC. Her latest book, Raving, thinks deeply about dancing, dissociation, drugs, bodies, and identity as McKenzie, recently transitioned, navigates the queer ravespaces of Bushwick, Brooklyn. On the line from Berlin, we talk about experimenting with language and writing, bodies and the beat, smart vs. stupid drugs, the intersection of transness and techno, Kathy Acker, cultural theory, and McKenzie's extraordinary journey from growing up in an Australian mining town to dancing on the bleeding edge of the NYC underground. Hosted by Vivian Host (aka DJ Star Eyes). For more info and extras, visit Ravetothegrave.org or Instagram @ravetothe.grave.

How We Got Here — Part 1: On the History of the Web

What is Web3, and why should we care about it? Will it be the digital revolution that brings the internet back to its decentralized and democratic roots? This week, internet expert (and Postlight CEO) Gina Trapani joins Rich and Paul to chat about their experiences with different iterations of the web and break down how it ended up so siloed, control-driven, and centralized. Will Web3 save us? Stay tuned.

    9. The Internet, I guess

    9. The Internet, I guess

One big thing we learned with this episode is that the internet was not a singular invention but an evolution - just like so many other curious foods, sports, holidays, and developments of history. Needless to say, the internet has become an integrated part of our daily lives. It is extremely powerful, mainly because it is open-sourced and cannot be totally shut down. As the old cliché goes, "with great power comes great responsibility." The Internet has come a long way, and who knows where it will take us in the future.

    Finding Your Voice

    Finding Your Voice

What does it mean to sound more like yourself?

    • Voice teacher Daisy Press guides us through some pretty unusual vocal exercises.
    • Maya and Bosco Kante are the founders of ElectroSpit, a family business devoted to helping people sing like robots. They tell us how an ungainly vintage instrument and a disappointing performance with Kanye West inspired them to create it.
    • As a teenager, people told Ionnalee that she had a good voice… for singing backup. She started the mysterious Iamamiwhoami project to find her artistic edge and reconnect with the way she sang as child.
    • What would an AI want to sing about? Botnik Studios uses predictive text to create new creative works. Hear a preview of The Songularity, their forthcoming album of computer-aided pop songs.
    • Daisy Press does a voice lesson with our coworker Maura Lynch, who sings in the indie rock band Blush. Can Maura add some vocal pizzazz to her favorite Karaoke song?

The Internet of Things and You

The Internet of Things and You
The buzz: Things. Your POV on The Internet of Things and M2M (machine to machine) technology: Real or vapor? Now or futuristic? Listen up! Companies that fail to implement M2M will fall behind their competitors, say a majority of IT decision makers in six countries surveyed by Harris Interactive for SAP. The experts speak. Don Peppers, Peppers & Rogers Group: “When devices begin to join the Internet of Things in vast numbers (as will happen over the next ten years), they won’t just talk to you, they’ll talk to each other and they’ll begin to make smart decisions themselves. Lights, thermostats, and door locks will ‘learn’ your habits and begin adjusting automatically.” Benjamin Wesson, SAP: “Sometime in 2008, the number of 'things' connected to the Internet exceeded the number of people on earth (Berg Insights 2012). Indeed, every time you turn on your car, the car is capturing telemetric data to be analyzed later by service personnel.” Join us for more on The Internet of Things and You.
