Luke #5: Luke 1:39–56, Mary Visits Elizabeth & The Magnificat

Luke #5: Luke 1:39–56, Mary Visits Elizabeth & The Magnificat
Mary, now pregnant, leaves Nazareth to visit her relative Elizabeth who is living with husband Zechariah in Judea. As Mary enters the home of Elizabeth, the unborn child “leaps” for joy thus indicating the miraculous events unfolding. Mary then sings a song of praise known as The Magnificat, the word that comes first in the Latin version of the Greek passage.

    Pray the Magnificat

    Pray the Magnificat
Join us in praying the Magnificat. Taken from Luke 1:46-55, the Magnificat is Mary's canticle, a song of praise and surrender in response to Elizabeth after the child leapt in her womb. My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, he has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel for he remembered his promise of mercy, the promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children forever.

030: When the Word of God Dwells Richly In You

Mary, the mother of Jesus, is esteemed for her faith in hearing the word that she would carry the promised Messiah.  But also consider that she was carrying the Word which was from the beginning in her womb as mentioned in John 1. Given this, it seems natural that she would accept God’s word concerning her with faith. For her to carry Jesus she had to first accept the written word.

Mary’s faith was already rich and full by her response: let it be to me according to your word. Even her cousin Elisabeth praises her faith in God’s word. Mary was blessed because she believed there would be a fulfillment of the word spoken to her. Mary’s trust in the word didn’t start at the moment the angel came to her. Instead, she had years of storing up the word, trusting it, letting it richly dwell in her. Her song of praise, known as The Magnificat in Luke 1:46-55, is a testament of her trust and dwelling in the scriptures.

Portraits of Christmas: Mary - A Portrait of Humility

Portraits of Christmas: Mary - A Portrait of Humility
So, why Mary? Why did God choose Mary to be the earthly mother of His Son, Jesus? Honestly, there are a LOT of non-biblical ideas about who Mary was. On the one hand, she is under-appreciated - some churches never mention her. Yet, she was "highly favored" among all women and deserves special recognition. On the other hand, she is over-appreciated - some churches exalt her to a position never intended for her. She is not to be worshiped or prayed to or... In fact, her life was marked by HUMILITY. Give a listen and learn!
