News & Reviews: Nightmare Alley, Uncharted, Mass, Reacher, The Tender Bar & The Last Thing Mary Saw

It's been a little while but News & Reviews finally returns with a solid crop of reviews of the latest in films and TV series. We also round up some recent trailers and the Oscar nominations that were announced last week.

We talk about noir thriller 'Nightmare Alley', video game adaptation adventure 'Uncharted', quiet drama 'Mass', recent George Clooney directed coming of age memoir 'The Tender Bar' and puritanical horror 'The Last Thing Mary Saw'. Andy also rounds up season 1 of both 'Reacher' and 'The Book Of Boba Fett'.

Andrew and Jerry Save the Streets!

Andrew and Jerry Save the Streets!

It's tough to balance the interests of public safety with the need for real criminal justice reform--and because politicians only want simple answers, the frequently get their solutions wrong, with devastating impact. Andrew and Jerry are joined by David Safavian, General Counsel for the American Conservative Union, for a deep-dive into just how to strike that balance--keeping communities safe while properly reforming a criminal justice system that is in dire need of change.

But they start with a discussion of the strange place free speech is in--from the unfolding Joe Rogan controversy to the attacks on recent AJSTW Guest Ilya Shapiro, circling back to their conversation with Eugene Volokh from last week and talking about Ira Glasser's appearance on Bill Maher's program, talking about the ACU policing the language of potential clients--instead of defending the principles of everyone's speech.

Then we're joined by criminal justice expert, David Safavian for a wide-ranging conversation about criminal justice reform and policing in America.  What needs to be done, why so many people get it wrong, and just what that means for America.  Plus, we get a preview of CPAC, happening in Orlando, FL later this month.  Andrew and Jerry share CPAC memories--and after David leaves, they talk about one of Jerry's favorite books and a movie Andrew is enjoying, "The Tender Bar".

Herman’s Hermits & The British Beat featuring Peter Noone

Peter Noone has been delighting audiences all of his life. A born entertainer, Peter went global with Herman’s Hermits when he was just fifteen years old, selling more than 60 million records and scoring seven gold records. Peter served proudly on the front lines of The British Invasion, with The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Tom Jones, Cream, The Rolling Stones, Dusty Springfield and so many more. Peter’s first person accounts, in full character dialect, are deliciously delivered.

Plus Fritz and Weezy are recommending Maid on Netflix and The Tender Bar on Prime.

    Scream (2022)

    Scream (2022)

We’re sharpening our knives this week for our long-anticipated review of the latest Scream film, or Scream 5 unofficially. This is the first of the franchise to not be directed by Wes Craven, as we instead of the filmmakers behind Ready or Not. Is this meta slasher whodunnit as much of a scream? And afterward, we discuss George Clooney’s latest directorial effort, The Tender Bar, which is based on the memoir by J.R. Moehringer and stars Ben Affleck, Tye Sheridan, and Lily Rabe.

One line from Affleck's over two-hour interview with Howard Stern went viral, causing even bigger problems for him and the filmmakers.

To repair the damage caused by his comments regarding his ex-wife, Jennifer Garner, Affleck must spend the rest of the publicity tour in damage control mode.
