The Spirit of Harriet Tubman Is Back to Guide Us Now - Episode 60

We first became familiar with meditation teacher and visionary leader Spring Washam through Dan Harris’ book, 10% Happier. We then recently heard her on his Ten Happier podcast talking about her new book, The Spirit of Harriet Tubman: Awakening from the Underground and we were blown away. Thankfully Dan connected us –and we had the honor of speaking with Spring on this week’s podcast.

Spring is considered a pioneer in bringing mindfulness-based healing practices to diverse communities. She's one of the founding teachers at the East Bay Meditation Center, located in Oakland, California.

She received extensive training by Jack Kornfield, is a member of the Teachers Council at Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Northern California, and has practiced and studied Buddhist philosophy in both Theravada and Tibetan schools of Buddhism since 1999. In addition to being a teacher, she is also a Shamanic practitioner and has studied indigenous healing practices since 2008 which lead her to create Lotus Vine Journeys, an organization that blends indigenous healing practices with Buddhist wisdom in South America.

Spring currently travels and teaches meditation, retreats, workshops, and classes worldwide.

In this week's episode we discuss Spring’s life changing conversations with Harriet Tubman which dive into The Underground Railroad and how Harriet is now the conductor of a new state of consciousness in the world.

    Episode 7: The Outlaw Handbook

When it came to living on the edge, Marsha wasn't just a big talker; she really did walk a vanishingly thin line between fearless and reckless. We consider Marsha’s complicated and ultimately unsettled legacy, speaking with those whose politics she shifted and shaped, those whose artistic trajectories she launched, and those she left in the emotional — and financial — lurch.

International Women's Day Greetings Glocal Citizens! Did you know IWD was first celebrated in 1911? Commemoration of the date was the outgrowth of the suggestion by Clara Zetkin, a communist activist and advocate for women's rights at the International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen in 1910. Planet of the Apes (2001 Remake)
This week, we thought we'd go all out by delivering our longest episode yet (5 whole hours!) on a film that added next to nothing to the careers of everyone involved and the larger franchise that bears its name: 2001's Planet of the Apes! Listen to us lose our collective minds over the recent phenomenon of speed watching, listening, living, etc. before we turn our existential crises into sincere enlightenment. Thankfully, the recent trailers for Ridley Scott's forthcoming films The Last Duel and House of Gucci restored our spirits. Finally, we walk through the nine circles of developmental Hell it took to see our mediocre subject film make its way onto cinema screens. Join us as we express what Tim Burton's varied career has meant to us over the years, defame the toxic existence of one Mark Wahlberg, and find genuine appreciation in this film's iteration of ape makeup while ascertaining no real reason why this movie was made other than the continual questing of Hollywood to make a buck above all else. Toby Keith fans may even find themselves shocked to see a special surprise awaiting them...Trust us when we say it's *all* here in this very special episode, one way or another. Feel free to skip to 2:43:20 for the beginning of our audio commentary. Colson Whitehead: “The Underground Railroad”

    Colson Whitehead: “The Underground Railroad”

Nearly two decades ago, author Colson Whitehead began thinking about writing about the Underground Railroad. “I remembered when I was a kid, I first heard those words…I thought it was a literal train beneath the earth,” he says. He put pen to paper and the result was the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Underground Railroad. In it, the historic secret network of safehouses for runaway slaves becomes a make-believe set of tracks and tunnels beneath southern cities and towns. The book tells the story of Cora, a runaway slave who makes various stops along the railroad in her search for freedom. Whitehead recreates the terror black people in the pre-Civil War era faced. It’s an essential read to understand America’s past and present, according to The New York Times. In this episode, he talks about the novel and about the process of writing.

Episode 5: Colson Whitehead on History, Literary Theory, and Race Relations

Just after the release of “The Underground Railroad” in 2016, we had author Colson Whitehead in for one of our very first ScribdChats. The novel became an instant success, picked for Oprah’s Book Club, praised by President Obama, and then going on to win the National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize. In this episode, Whitehead sits down with Michael Cohen, a professor of African American Studies at UC Berkeley, to talk about this ambitious, expansive, and important novel.

“The Underground Railroad” is available now on Scribd.
