Wow that was fantastic! What a great conversation with Taylor Morden, writer director producer and as it turns out neighbor. His documentaries include “The Last Blockbuster”, “Ska In The 90s”, “Unstuffed: A Build-A-Bear Story”, and soon to be released I hope “Getting Lost” a lost documentary. We talked about how he got started making documentaries, how he writes, how he edits, reaching out to celebrities, how important the sound is and much much more. Nostalgia is the primary focus of The Last Blockbuster, a documentary ironically recently released on Netflix that covers all the bases of the rise and fall of an American corporate icon.

And while we try to convince people that laserdiscs really are the optimum way to watch a movie, we also mention… The Last Blockbuster, we are totally out of that, a beaded curtain, over there take a left fourteen down, and they can live broadcast it to the public access channels, I remember I was in Morocco, he’s why we had to put a limit on our free popcorn policy, the special room, Wet Wednesdays, the town drunk, Spanish Clint Howard, VHS, eat anyone who tried to break in, call the HR department, multiple old lady customers, your friend with the vest has to leave, both of them have to wear an overcoat, trying to explain to people how cool Jami Gertz is, Mom and Pop, a very loud curtain, very clean, there’s gum stuck to everything, he’s constantly sniffing the movies… and I don’t know why, don’t mess with him… just let him have his popcorn, breaking into the satellite feed, well nobody’s returning their tapes without rewinding them more than once, which movie stars are you ok going to the bathroom with, I didn’t even know I had this movie in stock, living lips and Sour Patch Kids.

The Last Blockbuster is an upbeat, fun-filled documentary about the rise and fall of a corporate giant and how the manager of a small town Blockbuster franchise manages to outlast the rest. Featuring interviews with comedians and celebrities Adam Brody (“The O.C.”, Jennifer’s Body), Ione Skye (Say Anything, River’s Edge), Doug Benson (“Getting Doug with High”, The Lego Batman Movie), Paul Scheer (“The League”, “Veep”), Ron Funches (Trolls, Bob’s Burgers) and director Kevin Smith (Clerks, Jay and Silent Bob).

The Last Blockbuster follows Sandi Harding, the manager of the world’s last remaining Blockbuster – located in Bend, OR – as she reflects on the store’s vibrant past and navigates the difficult task of keeping a video rental store open in the era of streaming. Taking us through the history and subsequent rise and fall of the franchise, the documentary reveals the real reason why Blockbuster went out of business (hint – it wasn’t Netflix), while celebrating the unique and defining culture it created in the ’80s and ‘90s.
