124 – Kurt Baker (Kurt Baker Combo, Kurt Baker Band, The Leftovers)

If you're a fan of the power-pop genre, you're almost certainly also a fan of Kurt Baker. Over the past dozen years, the singer and songwriter has released a bunch of great records under his own name (and using the "Kurt Baker Combo" and "Kurt Baker Band" project names as well). He has also toured regularly, earned a spot on Steven Van Zandt's Wicked Cool Records label and relocated from Portland, Maine, to Madrid, Spain. As impressive as his solo career has been, it's only the tip of the iceberg.

Recently, Baker spoke to My First Band host Tyler Maas about living in Spain for the past eight years, the process of making his latest album (After Party — out now!) and his performance plans after an isolated year-plus. Of course, the conversation also turned to Baker's musical past, including his early bands in Maine, playing and promoting shows at a formative local all-ages venue called The Well, and really going for it in his teens and early 20s with his band The Leftovers. Along the way, the power-popper talked about his first European tour, playing with The Queers and Tommy Stinson, and the time his band blew three amps just minutes before opening for The Offspring.

My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. Music used in this episode comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers") and Kurt Baker ("I Like Her A Lot").

    Episode 120- Vampire Reboot

    Episode 120- Vampire Reboot

We tried our best to bring some lightheartedness back to the pod after the episode earlier this week...we were somewhat successful.  Some light stuff, some heavy stuff, but ALWAYS that Mechanic stuff...straight from the garage!  We talk about puppies and vampires. 'Nuff said.

    Ep. 14 - The Leftovers

    Ep. 14 - The Leftovers

At the same moment on October 14th,  one out of every fifty people on Earth vanished. Shockingly plucked by death’s talons, all depart without a trace. This is the premise of HBO’s fictional hit show, “The Leftovers” which recently finished its third and final season. Those remaining were left to ponder the inexplicability of their own mortality and navigate through a world filled with loss and confusion. On this episode, Grognostics asks the question - what if this happened in real life? What would be the plausible causes? Would it be geological, spiritual, multi-dimensional or induced by a lone ravenous, prognosticating, Mesozoic reptile? And most importantly, how would the size of Christopher Columbus’s manhood play a part? Luciano Muselli, Jevon Mattiassi, Ely Alexander, and Karen Starr guest to examine how and why 2% of the world’s population would meet their demise. Sobering, yes, but as usual there’s plenty of humor peppered in along the way.

liner notesThe Orlando Music History Group on Facebook has been blowing up lately.  So much I thought it might be time to play this cassette.  A lot of the bands on this cassette have been piping in and sharing old stories, posters, and merch. It has been very entertaining to say the least.

This is side A of a mix tape of Florida bands.  Most of whom were from the Orlando area.  It is a good representation of the Hardcore (and some of the Metalcore) community during the early 90's.  The cassette was made by Andrew Chadwick of Gainesville for Ian Koss of Ink 19 / WFIT.  It is made up of demos and 7"s and is very lo-fi because of it's vintage.  Thank to Ian for sending it in!
