Chapter One - The Prophet - A Feast for Crows | A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF)

Chapter One - The Prophet - A Feast for Crows | A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF)

Aeron “Damphair” Greyjoy, learns of his eldest brother Balon’s death and their brother Euron’s claiming the Sea Stone Chair. He is not happy with that outcome and calls for a kingsmoot to decide the next king. Simon and Mackelly consider the options.

    Chapter Review:
Aeron Greyjoy is drowning men in the sea (to bring them back with the kiss of life) when news arrives that his brother King Balon is dead. Aeron doesn’t break down or anything, but he recalls Balon with awe and reverence for his returning the Iron Islands to its traditional god (the Drowned God) and practices (they really don’t sow).

At Hammerhorn (Lord Goodbrother’s seat) Aeron learns further that his eldest remaining brother Euron has returned to Pike. He was banished for life by Balon, but has conveniently arrived back the day after the king’s death. Goodbrother wants to know if Euron’s claim should be supported, but the prophet needs time to pray on this one.

Aeron had spoken with Balon recently, and knows that Balon thought Asha should succeed him - and she too has claimed the throne. But Aeron is skeptical that the Iron Islanders would accept a queen. Theon is believed dead and Aeron despises Euron - he won’t have someone so unrighteous on the throne. He doesn’t want the honor for himself, so that leaves only Victarion, Aeron’s older, but Euron’s younger, brother.
While praying, he's struck by inspiration: in the old days kings were chosen not by hereditary. He calls for a kingsmoot on Nagga’s Hill on Old Wyk. All claimants and captains should go there to choose their next ruler.

    Characters/Places/Names/Events:
Aeron “Damphair” Greyjoy - Youngest brother of King Balon Greyjoy. Priest of the Drowned God.
Balon Greyjoy - King of the Iron Islands. Died falling from a bridge at Pike.
Euron “Crow’s Eye” Greyjoy - Younger brother of Balon, elder brother to Aeron. Was banished by Balon, but now returned to Pike.
Victarion Greyjoy - Next younger brother of Balon. Currently holding Moat Cailin for the Iron Islands.
Asha Greyjoy - Daughter of Balon. Fierce fighter and reaver. Well respected.
Theon Greyjoy - Younger brother to Asha. Grew up in Winterfell as ward of the Starks. Betrayed them. Was last seen losing Winterfell to Ramsay Bolton.
Kingsmoot - Ancient rite, whereby king’s of the Iron Islands were chosen from the worthy.

Chapter Sixty-Nine - Bran 7 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF)

Chapter Sixty-Nine - Bran 7 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF)

Bran and company are hiding in the crypts of Winterfell. They venture out to find the castle destroyed and Maester Luwin mortally wounded. Mackelly and Simon sort through the debris.

    Chapter Review:
Bran Stark sees and smells the destruction of Winterfell through the eyes of Summer. He’s been in wolf form for three days, but Osha, Hodor, Rickon and the Reeds are waiting for, and on, him in the crypts beneath Winterfell. With what he’s learned, the party decides to venture forth - they need food anyway.

Only Hodor has the strength to move the door which is blocked by rubble. The destruction is wanton and considerable: horses, dogs, and people lie dead everywhere. Bran blames Theon Greyjoy, but Osha suspects that the "Squid Prince" might have been a victim here too. Rickon doesn’t recognize it as his home. But he does recognize the direwolves who come trotting up. The wolves scent something and head for the Godswood.

There they find Maester Luwin on the edge of death. He counsels Osha to split the boys up. Take Rickon to the King’s Road and Bran to the Wall. She does so, taking Rickon, while the remainder accompanies Bran north. He thinks that while the crypts remain Winterfell will always be the home of the Starks and the heart of the North.

    Characters/Places/Names/Events:
Brandon (Bran) Stark -  Middle son of Eddard (Ned) and Catelyn (Cat) Stark. He was pushed from a tower by Jamie Lannister and lost the use of his legs.
Rickon Stark - Youngest son of Eddard (Ned) and Catelyn (Cat) Stark.

Ramsay Snow (Bolton) - Illegitimate son of Roose Bolton. Husband of the unwilling Donella Hornwood.
Meera Reed - Sixteen-year-old daughter of Howland Reed

Chapter Sixty-Six - Theon 6 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF)

Chapter Sixty-Six - Theon 6 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF)

Theon is surrounded. Ser Rodrik Cassel has amassed Northern forces to surround and retake Winterfell. At the 11th hour, Theon is saved by Reek, who has brought hundreds of Bolton men. But Reek wants more than just Theon’s good wishes. Simon and Mackelly weigh the treacheries.

    Chapter Review:
Maester Luwin advises Theon Greyjoy to yield Winterfell. Ser Rodrik Cassel has brought perhaps 2,000 loyal northmen who have Winterfell surrounded. Theon doubts Luwin’s loyalty, but the maester reminds him that he serves the Lord of Winterfell, who is Theon (kinda).

Theon gives the ironborn a rousing speech, but only 17 rally to his cause. The rest flee back to his sister Asha. Ser Rodrik wants to parlay and Theon rides out to meet him. Cassel is twitching to kill the turncloak, but Theon has a trump card. At a signal, Rodrik’s daughter Beth is paraded on the walls with a noose around her neck. Theon tells Rodrik that she dies at sunset and another citizen will join her every morning and night until the besiegers withdraw. Cassel offers himself in Beth’s place, but Theon’s not buying.

Luwin suggest that Theon take the Black. Theon considers how high someone with his training might rise in the Night’s Watch. But before he can answer, sounds of fighting are heard. Reek has returned, with hundreds of mounted Bolton men. They decimate the other northmen and kill Cassel and others. Reek reveals himself to be Ramsay Snow, Roose Bolton’s bastard. Theon is grateful, but Ramsay’s men are not done. They knock Theon unconscious, run Luwin through, and are ordered to burn the entire castle, save the Frey boys.

    Characters/Places/Names/Events:
Theon Greyjoy - Heir to the Iron Islands. Betrayed his former friend Robb Stark and invaded the North in the name of the Iron Islands.
Asha Greyjoy - Elder sister to Theon. Oldest surviving child of Balon Greyjoy.
Balon Greyjoy - Lord of the Iron Islands. Father to Asha and Theon.

Chapter Fifty-Six - Theon 5 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF)

Chapter Fifty-Six - Theon 5 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF)

Theon's nightly nightmares often revolve around his lies, deceits, and the atrocities he's committed. His sister Asha shoots him straight about his dire situation in Winterfell. He refuses to heed her advice and puts his last bit of hope on the shoulders of Reek. Simon and Mackelly raise their eyebrows in skepticism.

    Chapter Review:
Theon Greyjoy wakes from another bad dream to learn that his sister Asha has finally arrived in Winterfell. On his way to the Winterfell Great Hall to see her, he's surrounded by bodyguards. Ironborn have been dropping like flies around the castle, since they returned from the mill with the bodies of Bran and Rickon. Theon knows it's Reek who has committed the murders, to keep the secret of what happened at the mill from getting out. However, Theon uses the kennel master Farlen as a scapegoat for the crimes, and beheads him.

Asha has brought Theon reinforcements to help hold Winterfell. Unfortunately, she's brought him a mere 10 men. Theon says it's not enough, Ser Rodrik Cassel is riding toward the castle with an army. Asha points out that's something he should've thought about before taking Winterfell. She asks him to give up on the castle and come with her back to Deepwood Motte. He refuses, so she leaves. Theon gives Reek silver to buy men to help hold the castle. He then second-guesses why he didn't do the smart thing and leave with his sister. As dawn breaks over Winterfell, he looks at the heads of the boys on the spikes and thinks of the Miller's sons. They were the perfect stand-ins for the still-missing Stark boys.

Chapter Fifty - Theon 4 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF)

Chapter Fifty - Theon 4 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF)

Theon loses Bran, Rickon, and the direwolves. They escape with the help of Jojen, Meera, Osha, and Hodor. He gives chase, but they’re outsmarted by the wolves and the wildling. Reek suggests a way for Theon to save face. Simon and Mackelly put Reek’s plan to the sniff test.

    Chapter Review:
Theon Greyjoy awakes abruptly in Ned and Catelyn Stark's bed in Winterfell, but all is quiet. Too quiet! The direwolves' infernal howling has stopped. Theon dresses and sends men to find out what is up. As the castle is roused it becomes apparent that Bran and Rickon have escaped.

The young princes are accompanied by their direwolves, Hodor, Osha, and the Reeds. No horses are missing so Theon decides to wait for morning before beginning the pursuit. With the morn he rides out with his men, the Winterfell hounds, Reek, and Maester Luwin. The latter beseeches Theon to not harm the boys. Both know that they’re worth more alive than dead, so it is a deal Theon agrees to.

The hounds are defeated by some trickery by Osha - who has sent the direwolves in a different direction. Eventually, they’re forced to admit defeat. But Reek has a plan to save face. He’s brought spare cloaks and a wolf's head brooch, and has a hunch where the boys are.

Chapter Thirty-Seven - Theon 3 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF)

Chapter Thirty-Seven - Theon 3 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF)

Theon is winning easy victories on the Stony Shore of the north against barely defended fishing villages. He and Dagmer make a plan to do something a bit bolder. Theon hopes to impress his father Balon. Simon and Mackelly reckon that they know better.

    Chapter Review:
Theon’s Iron Born raiders have taken a fishing village and decimated the Wild Hares with a trap. Only Benfred Tallhart survived and he is in custody. The northerner spits bile and hatred at Theon for his treachery. Aeron Damphair decrees that the prisoner must die for his words. Theon, despite knowing Benfred fairly well, consigns him to Damphair as a sacrifice to the Drowned God.

Theon feels little pride and glory in the victory. Innocent villagers and reckless youths do not make for great stories. In his mind, he compares what he’s up to with the noble battle of the Whispering Woods. Clearly his loyalties are partly divided. In trying to teach a couple of his men a lesson about squabbling over booty, Theon accidentally kills one of them. The others don’t care, this just increases their share.

Theon retreats to Foamdrinker and talks with his old teacher Dagmer Cleftjaw, master-of-arms for House Greyjoy. Theon reveals a plan to give them both a better story to tell of this war. Dagmer will besiege Torrhen’s Square. The older man doesn’t like this plan, but Theon reveals that this is just a ruse to lure Ser Rodrik Cassel and his men out of Winterfell, leaving the seat of House Stark undefended.

    Characters/Places/Names/Events:
Theon Greyjoy - Heir to the Iron Islands. Sent to Pyke to bring the Greyjoy fleet into the war to help Robb Stark.
Stony Shore - Western coast of the North. Scantily populated and ill-defended.
Benfred Tallhart - Eldest son of Helman Tallhart. Captured and interrogated by Theon Greyjoy. Drowned by Aeron Greyjoy.
Asha Greyjoy - Elder sister to Theon. Oldest surviving child of Balon Greyjoy.
Balon Greyjoy - Lord of the Iron Islands. Father to Asha and Theon.
Victarion Greyjoy - Younger brother of Balon Greyjoy.
Aeron Greyjoy - Youngest brother to Lord Balon. Priest of the Drowned God. Dour and devout. Known as Damphair.
Dagmer Cleftjaw - Master-of-arms for House Greyjoy. Captain of the Foamdrinker. Part of Theon’s raiding party.

    Chapter Twenty-Four - Theon 2 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire

    Chapter Twenty-Four - Theon 2 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire

Theon views his new ship. Makes a new lady-friend. Admits his inner secrets to her. Discovers he’s been tricked. And gets one further slap in the face from his father’s war plans. Mackelly and Simon offer Theon some alternatives.

    Chapter Review:
Theon Greyjoy admires his new ship in Lordsport. She has room for 50 oars and a deck that could take 100 men. He’s approached by Esgred, wife of the ship-builder Sigrin. They flirt and Theon is very interested. He reckons she is too good for Sigrin, Esgred reckons the new ship is too good for Theon. He invites her to a feast and she agrees.

They ride together on Theon’s new horse Smiler who he obtained from Sawane Botley, who couldn’t cope with the size and fierceness of the beast. Theon is far more comfortable on horseback than his countrymen. He gropes Esgred, but she removes his hand. They discuss Theon’s claim to be heir of the Iron Islands and the relative claims of his elder sister Asha (she’s a woman, Theon will marry her off) and his uncles Euron (missing two years possibly dead), Victarion (solid but unimaginative), and Aeron (given himself over to religion).

Upon arrival at Pyke, Theon is amazed to discover that Esgred is in fact Asha. He sulks all the way to the feast where she, not he, is seated beside their father. After the meal, Balon summarizes their war plans: Theon will harry the Stormy Shore, Asha will take Deepwood Motte, and Victarion will conquer Moat Cailin. Balon cares only for war with the Starks, and trusts Theon with only the most menial of tasks.

    Characters/Places/Names/Events:
Theon Greyjoy - Heir to the Iron Islands. Sent to Pyke to bring the Greyjoy fleet into the war to help Robb Stark.
Asha Greyjoy - Elder sister to Theon. Oldest surviving child of Balon Greyjoy.
Balon Greyjoy - Lord of the Iron Islands. Father to Asha and Theon.
Euron Greyjoy - Brother of Balon Greyjoy. Been absent from the Iron Islands for more than two years. Possibly dead.
Victarion Greyjoy - Younger brother of Balon Greyjoy.
Aeron Greyjoy - Youngest brother to Lord Balon. Priest of the Drowned God. Dour and devout. Known as Damphair.
The Sea Bitch - Theon’s warship.

Chapter Eleven - Theon 1 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire

Chapter Eleven - Theon 1 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire

Theon returns home to Pike after 10 years a captive. His welcome is not all he had dreamed it would be. His father, Balon, doesn’t want to pay the gold price for his crown, he’d rather pay the iron price. Mackelly and Simon weigh the options and worry for Winterfell.

    Chapter Review:
Theon Greyjoy arrives back in Pyke after 10 years away. His heart swells when he sees the kraken sigil flying above the ramparts. He has one last visit with the captain’s daughter, telling her of the old ways of the Iron Islands and how she might be his salt wife - basically a sex slave - she’s not entirely opposed. But Theon is more concerned with returning his family to past glories.

When the ship docks, he’s a bit puzzled by the lack of fanfare. A priest of the Drowned God offers a ride up to Pike. The priest is Theon’s uncle Aeron, youngest brother of Lord Balon. Aeron was a fun-loving youth, but is now devout and joyless. He and Theon do not get on very well.

When Theon finally gets an audience with his father, he’s treated as an outsider, an emissary of a hostile foreign force, and certainly not as the prodigal son returned. Theon lays out the strategy, the Ironmen’s fleet to attack the Westerlands and in return Balon will be given independence and his crown back. But Balon sees other uses for his fleet that don’t involve gifts from the hated Starks.

    Characters/Places/Names/Events:
Theon Greyjoy - Heir to the Iron Islands and former ward of Ned Stark. Sent to Pike to bring the Greyjoy fleet into the war to help Robb Stark.
Asha Greyjoy - Elder sister to Theon. Oldest surviving child of Balon Greyjoy.
Balon Greyjoy - Lord of the Iron Islands. Father to Asha and Theon.
Aeron Greyjoy - Younger brother to Lord Balon. Priest of the Drowned God. Dour and devout. Known as Damphair.

    Chapter Thirty-Seven - Bran 5 - A Game of Thrones | A Song of Ice and Fire

    Chapter Thirty-Seven - Bran 5 - A Game of Thrones | A Song of Ice and Fire

Bran, Robb, and some other Winterfell men take Bran's new saddle and horse out for a test drive. Things are clicking on all cylinders until a band of wildings and deserters from the Night's Watch show up. Things escalate quickly, resulting in bloody carnage and a wildling hostage. Simon explains how he recently found a similar scene on his back porch.

    Chapter Review:
Bran Stark, his brother Robb, Theon Greyjoy, the wolves, and some other Winterfell men accompany Bran out of Winterfell for Bran's first ride in his new saddle. Robb and Bran race ahead. Bran is all smiles and excitement until Robb tells him of their father's troubles in King's Landing with Jamie Lannister. Bran wants to go home but they decide to find the wolves first. While looking for them, a group of wildlings and deserters from the Night's Watch find Bran alone and attempt to rob him. Robb returns and he and the wolves bring a bloody end to all but two of the raiders. When Theon puts an arrow through the man who was holding Bran at knife-point, the fighting ends. Robb decides to take the remaining wildling woman hostage.

Episode 21 - Is It Better To Avoid Trailers and Episode Promos for Game of Thrones?

Episode 21 - Is It Better To Avoid Trailers and Episode Promos for Game of Thrones?

Scott and Oliver answer the question on this weeks episode of Ignorance is This!

How does knowing certain locations, character whereabouts, and events of Season 7 of the HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones affect one's disposition or enjoyment for the show? Oliver has avoided both the pre-season trailers as well as the promo videos for each weeks episode in order to stay ignorant of these particulars.

Also! Enjoy discussion on the best conditions for watching movies, learn what the movie trope known as 'offscreen teleporting' is, and scratch your head
over Oliver's odd line of questioning towards Scott about peanut butter sandwiches. What could that possibly mean? We still don't know.
