Erin tested and loved many different aspects of psychology before finding her home in sports psych. She shares how that training gives her the tools and perspective to meet her athletes where they're at to treat the whole person.
We talk about:

County Prosecutor Karen McDonald
Karen McDonald, Oakland County Michigan's prosecutor, has been on the front lines fighting child abuse for years. Prior to her current role, she's been an assistant prosecutor, family court judge, and worked in private practice.
In our conversation, Prosecutor McDonald gives us real world examples of the valuable partnership between her office and the County's Child Advocacy center, or CAC - Care House of Oakland County. We also discuss the value of therapy dogs, what it takes to prosecute disturbing crimes against kids, and why McDonald's own mother's story has inspired the work she's now doing.
The "It Shouldn't Hurt To Be a Child" Podcast is narrated by Karen Newman, and is made possible thanks to the generous support of Sheryl Hauk.

DFTW 29 - What is difference in Service & Emotional Support dogs & whats the point?
Many think that emotional support animals and service dogs are interchangeable, but these two types of service animals are meant for separate tasks. A service dog is specially trained to perform a function or job for an owner that has a physical, intellectual, or emotional disability. An emotional support animal serves as more of a companion for the owner.
So many questions about service dogs vs emotional support vs therapy dogs, I hope that this podcast will help to educate others on these different type of dogs.

Service, Therapy and Support Animals
In this episode I talk about the various organizations that train these animals. The differences between the services provided, the legislation regarding their freedoms and accesses, and those who through deceit, shamefully pass their untrained animals off as service providers.

An Ode to The Good Doctor
An Ode to The Good Doctor
Sometimes being a HappiHuman means we must go through some grief - as I am going though right now.
So if you’ll oblige me, I’d like to share my candid thoughts from a journal entry I wrote about my beloved Berkeley boy - my first dog who was much, much more than that.
My intention in sharing these private moments is not to make you sad or cry or conjure up hurtful memories of your own. Rather, my intention is to open my heart in the hopes that others will open theirs.
We must remember that love is the foundation upon which all of humanity stands. And with all the craziness and challenges humanity has faced this past year, I think we could all use this reminder - especially around the holidays.
So as we go forth, remember the cherished people and pets in your life. Rekindle lost connections. Keep your heart open. And return to being human.
Don’t procrastinate about feeling better…take action and invest in your health.

The Love and Psychology of Dogs
I so enjoyed this conversation on the “Love and Psychology of Dogs” and am excited to share it with you! The guests on this podcast episode are Dr. Nancy Shay, veterinarian and Jeannette Carpenter, dog walker. Join us as we discuss the following and more:
- our thoughts on recent research on the “intelligence,” including emotional intelligence, of dogs
- dogs’ emotions and sense of morality
- amazing research on the effects dog ownership has on the health of children and adults
Dr. Nancy has worked at the Highlands Veterinary Hospital in Sparta, New Jersey for 22 years. She has a special interest in physical rehabilitation and animal behavior. She earned her veterinary degree from University College Dublin Veterinary School of Ireland and is currently working toward her certification in canine rehabilitation.
Jeannette Carpenter has owned her own dog walker/pet sitter business for 10 years. I have aways enjoyed and appreciated her funny and moving stories about her “clients.” In this recorded conversation I especially enjoyed learning about her two styles of walks she gives her dogs.
Enjoy!
