Uncannuary: The Crow, Favorite Movies of 2023

Uncannuary: The Crow, Favorite Movies of 2023

It’s January, so that means it’s time for the AIPT Movies Podcast’s “Uncannuary” series! Where we cover movies that feature superheroes or vigilantes, either adapted from comics or created specifically for the big screen! In this week’s episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss the 1994 supernatural-action-bummer-noir, The Crow!

An iconic soundtrack! A city so dangerous and depressing it’ll make you want to move to Gotham! Terrifying, heartless villains! Amazing cinematography and production design! Great action and stunts, including what may be the best rooftop-running scenes of all time! Ernie Hudson, Michael Wincott, David Patrick Kelly, Tony Todd, and what would have been a star-making performance from the late Brandon Lee! A borderline miracle in terms of quality (considering the mid-production tragedy), this dark, sad, somewhat funny, and surprisingly sweet story gives you a totally different kind of comic book movie!

In addition, Matt, Tim, and Alex share their favorite movies of 2023!

Hosted by supposed “industry vets,” Alex Harris, Tim Gardiner, and Matt Paul, the show gives you a peek behind the scenes from three filmmakers with oddly nonexistent filmographies. Talking Conspiracies and Black Hollywood with the Creatives Behind They Cloned Tyrone

Talking Conspiracies and Black Hollywood with the Creatives Behind They Cloned Tyrone

The Netflix original film They Cloned Tyrone came out swinging, delivering a unique Black story that combined sci-fi, comedy, and impressive cast chemistry. Dear Culture welcomes the film's director and co-writer, Juel Taylor, and producers, Mark Wright and Stephen "Dr" Love to discuss the behind-the-scenes movie magic that included Jamie Foxx and the struggles to release a film during a tense Hollywood strike.

James Harden vs. Daryl Morey, 50 Years of Hip-Hop and They Cloned Tyrone Review

James Harden vs. Daryl Morey, 50 Years of Hip-Hop and They Cloned Tyrone Review

In this episode, Wellington and Savon discuss Dalvin Cook heading to the Jets and Ezekiel Elliot's new fit with New England. Next up, they talk about James Harden's harsh and negative comments about Daryl Morey and how Team USA is looking so far. Next up, they analyze Anthony Joshua's win over Robert Helenius, why he's not ready for Deontay Wilder and then they commemorate and recognize the 50-year anniversary of Hip-Hop.

In the second half, they review They Cloned Tyrone, the new science fiction comedy mystery film directed by Juel Taylor and starring Jamie Foxx, John Boyega, and Teyonnah Parris. They start off by analyzing how this was a very smart and sophisticated film but still fun and unique. Next up, they discuss how this was an extremely daring film and exclusively innovative. Finally, they highlight how impressive John Boyega's multiple character portrayals were, Jamie Foxx's consistent influence, and why more films like this are needed.

104 - Project Shadowchaser IV: The Gates of Time (1996)

104 - Project Shadowchaser IV: The Gates of Time (1996)

This week we watched the fourth and final Project Shadowchaser film starring the patron saint of the podcast Frank Zagarino. This time round the Zagman plays an unstoppable ancient android awoken from a dig site in Africa, who will stop at nothing to get his cosmic doohickey back from a pair of hapless archaeologists.

Sam has also been playing a bit of the old Playstation 5, watching the disappointing last 3 episodes of Netflix's Witcher season 3, and enjoying John Boyega & Jamie Foxx in They Cloned Tyrone. Meanwhile Lewis has been watching a bit of Paramount Plus including Zoey 102, as well as finally finishing the 60s in his decade-spanning Spotify project.

    Unbreakable & Barbenheimer

    Unbreakable & Barbenheimer

In this week’s episode of the AIPT Movies podcast, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss M. Night Shyamalan’s tale of real-life superheroes and comic book mythos, Unbreakable!

Perfectly balanced horror, tension, and comedy! A wonderful cast that includes Robin Wright, a magnetic Samuel L. Jackson, and Bruce Willis in one of his greatest roles! A fantastic (and occasionally pretty funky) score from James Newton Howard! Graceful camera work and effective use of color that helps define the characters and story! One of Shyamalan’s best movies and one of his best twist endings! All that and more in this movie that helped pave the way for the modern superhero genre, and is secretly about how you can never be happy if you’re not true to yourself!

In addition, Tim and Alex share their spoiler-free thoughts on Barbie, Oppenheimer, They Cloned Tyrone, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem!

'Talk to Me' and 'They Cloned Tyrone' Movie Reviews and Hollywood Discussion

'Talk to Me' and 'They Cloned Tyrone' Movie Reviews and Hollywood Discussion

Talk to Me is THE horror movie of the summer, A24 and Danny and Michael Philippou (youtubers) bring their directorial debut in the form of this possession ghost-story party drug gone terribly, terribly wrong.  'Talk to Me' is, pardon the pun, the horror movie being talked about and out in theaters now- please give our spoiler-free review a listen and then get your patookus in a theater seat and prepare to be terrified! Does it live up to being called the scariest movie in years!? Listen and find out!

Talk to Me is yet another horror movie that is taking the box office by storm, already tripling it's budget of 4million and solidifies the continuation of HORROR DOMINANCE! If you're a new filmmaker and want to make a positive ROI and gain the ability to make that second film, create horror!

They Cloned Tyrone! Do NOT let this movie come to Netflix and then be buried, this is your warning. The summer's funniest ensemble of Jamie Foxx, John Boyega, and Teyonah Parris will take you on a journey in Cabin in the Hood that you shan't soon forget! Juel Taylor directs the fire out of this film in his debut, taking inspiration from Blacksploitation films that came before, but he harnesses that power and gives his audience an absolute delightful and surprisingly wild story that plays out like a Twilight Zone episode. I can't believe this is his first movie, because it is shot beautifully, with a grainy tactile feel to it, and you can smell the fried chicken through the screen... but you may not want to eat it, allow Slick Charles to explain in a character / actor match made in Hollywood heaven! Jamie Foxx is electric, Boyega has range, and Teyonah Parris steals the show, don't miss it or our spoiler-free review of 'They Cloned Tyrone.' Oh, and David Alan Grier, come on! On Netflix now, go watch it!

As you all know, I run a movie theater and my cohost sells insurance (dabbles), so please indulge as in the 3rd act of this episode as we go over Hollywood as a whole, summer blockbusters, and what movies coming down the pipeline that we are stoked for! Think of it as a catch-up discussion of the movie industry and I look to the near and uncertain future of cinema! From Indiana Jones and The Flash, to James Gunn and Dune 2, to the state of movie releases and potentially being moved back- join us in this fun discord!

As always, we love you! Please consider sharing our podcast with those movie lovers around you, we would appreciate it more than you know! And, if you dig it, please consider dropping that 5-star review. We love it when we're judged!

    VIVA LA HORROR AND CINEMA!
