Share a tab and grab a fork as we dig into some tasty blues inspired psychedelia curated by the good captain. What is it that we do here at InObscuria? Well, we exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. As always, our hope is that we turn you on to something new!

Gen. Spalding: We have to separate clearly between totalitarian regimes and free societies for our societies to thrive

Gen. Spalding: We have to separate clearly between totalitarian regimes and free societies for our societies to thrive

In this episode of the Political Periscope General Robert Spalding speaks about current geopolitical tensions involving Russia and China, the potential of escalated conflict, and the contemporary comparison to a second Cold War. He highlights the need for data encryption and transparency to safeguard democracy in today's digital age. Additionally, he evaluates the not so obvious Chinese influence on President Joe Biden's security policies through US based companies, and considers the potential fallout from a Chinese invasion of Taiwan.

    P055 The Mercy Journals

    P055 The Mercy Journals

Allen 'Mercy' Quincy, the protagonist of this novel, writes as he begins his journal:

If I go to my memories directly I'll never survive. I will take the longer road and lay an ambush. I will describe my world. I will tell you about Ruby.

The Mercy Journals is set 1n 2047 in the wake of a third world war. Owing also to runaway effects of climate change and the collapse of nation/states, over a third of the global population has already died.

Former soldier Allen "Mercy" Quincy suffers from PTSD and is haunted by guilt and lingering memories of his family. When he meets a dancer named Ruby, she breathes new life into his carefully constructed existence. He begins to journal.

Here are some great comments from reviewers and readers to entice you:

"Part Lord of the Flies, part Romeo Dallaire's Shake Hands With the Devil, I came out of this book deeply touched by the characters who moved through it, but also more alert. There's a sense of the prescient in this novel - of where we could end up if we're not careful."

Aislinn Hunter, author of The World Before Us

"Not since Margaret Atwood's Snowman have we met such a desperate and compelling hero as Allen Quincy, doing his best to survive in a post-apocalyptic world."

Merilyn Simonds, author of The Convict Lover

"Casper's wry lament for the world is utterly unforgettable. She creates a slow apocalypse and finds real human voices and aching in the collapse and rebirth of society."

Emily Schultz, author of The Blondes

The Mercy Journals (Arsenal 2016) is Claudia Casper's third novel. It won the prestigious Philip K. Dick Award for Science Fiction. Her debut novel, The Reconstruction, was a national best-seller.

How Close Are We to World War III?

How Close Are We to World War III?

One month since Russia invaded Ukraine, the war has reached a stalemate, raising concerns about whether fighting could spill over into neighboring countries. Are we on the verge of another world war? To understand the current situation, we spoke with Joshua Shifrinson, a BU Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies associate professor of international relations.

AH 11 Operation Unthinkable - Churchill's plan to attack Russia and start a Third World War

AH 11 Operation Unthinkable - Churchill's plan to attack Russia and start a Third World War
According to Field Marshal Montgomery, rule number one on the first page of the book of war is ‘do not march on Moscow’.

In April 1945, Winston Churchill ordered the British Chiefs of Staff to rip up the rule book and plan for an attack on their wartime ally, Russia.

It was audacious, inconceivable and incredibly risky.

So, fittingly, it was codenamed Operation Unthinkable.

Just how close did we come to launching the Third World War in 1945?
