HBW082: Cameka Smith And Her Women In Business Network, BOSS Network

HBW082: Cameka Smith And Her Women In Business Network, BOSS Network

All of us need support. Black Women entrepreneurs especially need to know the importance of connecting with others on the journey to success. Rosetta’s guest today is Cameka Smith, the visionary and founder of an amazing brand, "The Boss Network" which has been featured in Black Enterprise, INC, and listed in Forbes as one of the Top 10 websites to visit for career and entrepreneurial women. In this conversation, Cameka shares why becoming a member of a business network for women is so vital and how you can take the first steps to make it a reality for you.

Are you part of a “Women In Business Network?” Why not?

Women face some specific challenges when it comes to building their own entrepreneurial endeavors. It’s almost impossible to walk that path alone - yet some of you still are. Why? There are so many women walking the same path as you who can be of help and encouragement. Today’s guest, Cameka Smith created BOSS Network to help women like you build your business more successfully and with less of the emotional angst and frustration that is typical to walking the path of an entrepreneur alone. You’ve got to listen to this episode as she makes her case for building connections that can fuel your personal and business health.

How you can leverage personal connections to advance your business.

Cameka Smith has discovered that networking is not about the quantity of connections you make, but about the quality of connections you make. It’s like building relationships in any other area of life, you’ve got to find the people you click with and work at nurturing and investing in those relationships. When you have that kind of personal commitment to others you are willing to do anything to help them and they are willing to anything to help you. It’s a win-win - and you both get a new friend in the process. Find out more about how Cameka has learned this lesson and how she suggests you go about forging those kinds of connections, on this episode of Happy Black Woman.

Why you have to put yourself on the to-do list.

Rosetta loves to get jewels of wisdom from the successful Black Women Entrepreneurs she hosts on the podcast and when she asked Cameka Smith what she does to stay productive and on task, she gave an answer that was a bit outside the normal responses Rosetta receives. She said that she’s learned that she has to put herself on the to-do list in order to ensure that she’s getting the care, rest, exercise, and whatever else SHE needs to be healthy. In her mind, if she’s not healthy, there’s no way she’ll be able to serve clients and run her business in a healthy way. Find out more about why Cameka says every woman needs to put herself on the to-do list, on this episode.

There’s no one “right way” to be an entrepreneur.

One of the biggest joys of being an entrepreneur is that you don’t have to follow someone else’s outline for your life or your business. You get to decide how things will look and work. In other words, there’s no right way to be an entrepreneur. It’s YOUR journey and you get to figure out what works best for you given your unique personality and gift-mix - and you get to apply it in the way that fits your lifestyle best. Cameka Smith shares a ton of insight on this topic on this episode, so do what you can to make the time to listen.

HBW081: How Chris Tia Donaldson Provides Natural Hair For Black Women Through Her Successful Business.

HBW081: How Chris Tia Donaldson Provides Natural Hair For Black Women Through Her Successful Business.

Many black women search and search for ways to care for their hair naturally, and Chris Tia Donaldson was among them until she decided to figure out how to provide natural hair for black women to solve her own problem. On this episode, Rosetta chats with Chris about how she stepped out of the legal profession to begin her hair care business, what it took to make it successful, and how she manages to run such a successful and large company while still keeping her sanity. It’s a great conversation, so be sure you listen.

Building a successful business requires that you get out of your own way.

As Chris Tia Donaldson was in the beginning stages of her business she discovered that many of the things she thought were going to be obstacles to her success were only obstacles in her mind. In reality, there were ways of getting beyond those things if she would open herself up to the possibility that she could find the solutions she needed. The way she puts it is that she had to learn to get out of her own way. That's a lesson many of us need to learn, too. On this episode of Happy Black Woman, you’re going to hear the invaluable lessons Chris had to learn in order to grow her business (and herself), and you’ll enjoy hearing the optimism and strength she’s developed as a result.

Start where you are and keep asking until someone says, “Yes.”

When Chris Tia Donaldson first launched her natural hair care products for black women she knew that a key marker on the road to success would be getting her products into retail stores. But it was scary to think of cold calling store managers or sourcing departments. How did she overcome the fear? She decided that if she wanted to get beyond where she was, she simply needed to get started and that required action. So as she made that bold step of believing in herself she discovered it wasn’t as hard as she had imagined and success followed close behind. You can hear the lessons Chris has learned on this episode of Happy Black Woman.

You don’t need everything you think you need to build your own business.

When the idea to start a business to provide natural hair for black women became an idea she couldn't resist, Chris Tia Donaldson had no idea what to do. She was from a legal background and didn’t know the first thing about developing product formulas, coming up with packaging, and creating a marketing and distribution plan. But once she got started she discovered that she didn’t really need all the skills she had imagined she’d need. And what she did need, she was able to learn as she went. Most of us do the same thing - we imagine the difficulties we’ll face on the road ahead are greater than they really are. Don’t let your own ignorance and imagination keep you from getting started. You’ll find that just like Chris, you can learn and grow as you go, so don’t wait!

You’re going to feel fear on the way to success. It’s how you deal with it that matters.

Many women think that if they are afraid of stepping into a business opportunity then it must mean that they are not meant to be in business. But the fact is that all of us feel fear. It’s what you do in response to the fear that matters. Chris Tia Donaldson says that she has felt fear all along the way, but has learned that stepping past it to do what is required to grow her business is all it takes for the fears to hush - and for her to find success. That is one powerful insight among many that Chris shares on this episode of Happy Black Woman, so be sure you listen!

HBW080: 5 Steps to Launch Your Business In 2017

HBW080: 5 Steps to Launch Your Business In 2017

Do you really want to launch your business in 2017? It’s a serious question. It’s time to stop putting things off because of fear or doubt or the negative voices around you and make the commitment to build the business you know deep in your heart you can create. Rosetta is hosting an event in New Orleans soon called, “Build Your Business LIVE,” and it’s designed for women like you who are ready to stop making excuses and build a business. But to give you a taste of the event just in case you can’t attend, Rosetta shares her 5 steps to launch your business on this episode of the podcast. These steps come from her personal journey as an entrepreneur and she is confident that if you apply these steps, you’ll build a successful business. Want to know what the 5 steps are? Be sure to listen.

Getting focused on launching your business takes intentional effort.

When you first think about starting a business of your own it’s likely that you get overwhelmed. There is so much to it, so much to do and figure out and organize. How do you get started in a way that sets you up for success? Rosetta says the very first thing you have to do is get focused. That means determining when you’re going to work on your business, what topic or niche you’re going to build your business around, and much more. On this episode, she walks through this issue of getting focused and gives you tips to get started, so be sure you make the time to hear what she has to teach you.

You can’t launch a successful business without knowing who it is for.

It’s common for women who are starting a business to think that whatever they create as a product or service is going to be usable by everyone. But it’s simply not true. An offer to everyone is usually an offer to no one. People are looking for specific solutions to their specific problems and needs. You’ve got to decide exactly WHO you will be serving with the amazing content and resources you create. If you don’t, you’ll find your business is going nowhere. Avoid that trap by learning how to discover your niche audience, on this episode of Happy Black Woman.

If you don’t show up in online searches, you don’t exist to your ideal clients.

If you think for just a moment about how people find the things they need in the modern days we live in, you’ll immediately recognize the importance of the internet. Everybody pulls out their smartphone to search for things the moment they feel a need of any kind. That means that your business has got to have a professional and clear web presence if people are going to take you seriously. If you don’t, they’ll assume you are just a hobbyist and keep looking. Rosetta has some ideas to share about how you can get your website built and rocking so be sure you hear what she has to share on this episode.

Success in business only comes when you professionally and consistently market.

There are absolutely NO businesses that become successful that never tell others about their products or services. And for most women entrepreneurs, talking about themselves and what they can do to help people is the hardest part. Rosetta recognizes the difficulty it is to put yourself out there and the way it can feel sleezy or dishonest - so she’s going to teach you a different way - a better way. You can hear how she does it on this episode.

HBW076: Unclutter Your Life With These 4 Rituals

HBW076: Unclutter Your Life With These 4 Rituals

What would be possible if you could truly unclutter your life? What if you could get rid of all the extra stuff laying around your house that causes you stress every time you look at it? What if you could unclutter your email inbox, getting rid of all those spam and subscription emails you never even look at? And what about your mental and emotional bandwidth - what if you could completely declutter yourself in that way? This episode reveals Rosetta’s approach to uncluttering your life through 4 very specific rituals. If you apply what she has to share, you will be a new woman!

Clutter is a psychological weight on you even if you don’t realize it.

The human brain is meant to work in an orderly fashion - whether that’s in creative ways or more systematic ways - order is needed to keep stress at bay. When you have excess clutter lying around your home or office your mind tends to think about those things subconsciously, then your emotions get in on the act and begin to compile layers of stress that those things are not being tended to. In time, you’ll be a stressed out woman and not know why. Today’s episode gives you some tips for how you can unclutter your life and keep the stress monster away!

Do you have relational clutter that you need to jettison?

Most of us do. It’s the resentment, bitterness, or unforgiveness that we’ve allowed to linger in our hearts, that we are afraid to deal with. But sometimes it’s not those things - it’s the continued interaction with people who are tearing us down rather than building us up. In either case, the end result is that you are emotionally burdened and unable to be your best self. On this episode, Rosetta walks you through some of the reasons you need to declutter your relationships and tells you how you can do it.

    Is inbox zero REALLY possible?

If your business or lifestyle requires you to use email to any degree you know the hassle it is to deal with junk mail, unwanted subscriptions, and the clutter of an inbox that is out of control. But you don’t have to stay that way. If you take Rosetta’s advice (shared on this episode) you’ll get control of your inbox in no time and find that this kind of decluttering actually provides you more creative energy and emotional strength to pursue things that really matter.

Did you know you can unclutter your mind as much as you can your home?

Most of us carry around baggage in the form of limiting beliefs or wrong assumptions about life, people, and the world we live in. It’s just a fact of how we are wired. But you can take control of the trash that clutters your mind and intentionally direct your thoughts toward things that are true, right, and good - things that will fuel your life rather than limit it. On this episode, Rosetta walks you through some steps you can take to uncluttter your life by decluttering your mind. It’s amazing what happens when you have your head on straight!

HBW074: Toni Navy, Business Strategy That Brings Success

HBW074: Toni Navy, Business Strategy That Brings Success

It’s not often that you get to sit down with someone who’s business is business strategy. But that is EXACTLY what you’re going to get on this episode of The Happy Black Woman Podcast. Rosetta is chatting with a fellow participant in Lisa Sasevich’s Sassy Mastermind, Toni Navy. Toni spent many years in the corporate environment and learned business and successful business strategy at a high level while she was there. But in time she moved out of the corporate environment to help business owners large and small build the kind of strategy for success that really works. Toni has such practical help to give on this episode, so be sure you take the time to listen.

Are you doing the right things that will help you be more profitable?

Business strategy may sound like a complicated thing but it’s really not. Strategy is nothing more than making a plan for how you are going to create your valuable product or service, how you are going to get it in front of those who need it (marketing) and how you are going to follow up on them once they show interest. That requires people, processes, and much more - in fact, Toni has summarized it in her “5 P” process for business success - and she shares all 5 of them and explains how they work to make your business a success, on this episode.

If you have your marketing message down and communicate it effectively, you’ll make sales.

Many entrepreneurs and business owners that Toni Navy works with come to her for help with their business strategy because THEY are unclear on what they are offering and how to present it to their ideal prospects. If you as a business owner don’t know what you’re offering, your customers surely won’t. That’s why you have got to get clear on what you are offering and then figure out how to offer it effectively. Those two pieces are known as brand identity and marketing - and they are things that every successful business owner figures out and leverages to great advantage. Ep. 591 - Arnie Tokyo Rosenthal (Baseball Urban Legend)

Ep. 591 - Arnie Tokyo Rosenthal (Baseball Urban Legend)

There are many cross-sections of the sports business environment, but none are probably as bizarre as the true urban legends of the past. Arnie "Tokyo" Rosenthal is a part of that rich history, with his ability to con himself through New York Yankees media relations from 1977 to 1984, as a member of the media. Rosenthal relates his story of getting the ultimate access pass, and seeing some of the legends of baseball up close and personal, while also honing his photography skills. Rosenthal talks about the time he met Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle in 1978, even getting his picture snapped with them, as well as seeing "The Boss" George Steinbrenner in an adjacent luxury suite. Rosenthal was never caught, quitting the con game on his own terms after the 1984 season, but ended up confessing over a decade later to some of the former Yankees brass for a few lasting laughs. Arnie's memoir, A Fauxtographer's Yankee Stadium Memoir, is available at Amazon.

We talked about him getting on Howard, we talk about always coming back, old TV, young people, Howard Cosell, Thurman Munson, the 70's Yankees and more.

It's funny, it's violent, it's jammed with F's, it's brilliant and it's...full of forgiveness? Quentin Tarantino's opus to L.A. hitmen & scumbags is as influential as a modern movie can get. John Travolta got his career back while Uma Thurman & Sam Jackson hit stardom because of this. So rewatchable! Get your Sparkplug Coffee (lots of cream, lots of sugar), then dig into the Pulp.

Spider-Man 3 (2007) In this episode, John and Alex take on the cinematic travesty that is Spider-Man 3. Starring Toby Maguire, Topher Grace, James Franco, Kirsten Dunst, and Bryce Dallas Howard, this comic book flick is sure to turn your stomach. From the poorly thought out and badly cast villains to that stupid musical scene in the middle you sort of remember, this film is sure to induce cringing and vomiting. Do not watch if you're pregnant or allergic to dying franchises. This piece of cinematic garbage put the bullet in the head of the entire existing Batman franchise. Listen along as John and Alex groan and sigh at the *insane* quantity of ice and plant puns. Then listen along as John and Alex become progressively more annoyed and eventually enraged at the inanity of this superhero flick disaster.
