Special Edition: The Ripple Effect of Devastating Floods

In this special edition of F&T Time, we speak to FTMA Members, David & Mark Sly, Directors of Sly Bros who have been impacted by the recent flood disaster in South East Queensland and Northern NSW.

In the community of Woodburn alone, 95% of the residential and all businesses have been destroyed and they are not the only town in the area with sad statistics like this.

This catastrophic storm was not just a flood but a disaster for the entire Northern Rivers Region.

In this episode we discuss what happened, what the real impact is and what must be done to ensure this flood doesn’t become a business, town and region ending event.

Eight employees of Sly Bros have lost everything as a result of the devastating floods. David and Mark have set up a GoFundMe for their eight employees. To donate to the Sly Bros employees directly, please use the link below.

Ep 3: The Clive Martella Service to Industry Award

Clive Martella, FTMA Board Member and Director of MB Prefab Framing in Geelong was down to earth, funny, straight up, hardworking and such an honest person.

Clive was an essential person within the FTMA Board.  Not only was he one of the people who worked hard to get the National Association going but he remained a Director throughout his time on the board.

To continue his legacy, FTMA Australia created the Clive Martella Service to Industry Award.

Today as we open the nominations for the 2022 Award, we are joined by a true pioneer in roof truss manufacturing, the 2019 Clive Martella Service to Industry recipient, Jim Cheney, and his granddaughter and FTMA Board member, Nikita Bourke.

Welcome to the Backwoods Bowhunter Podcast. Our style is for you to feel like you are sitting around the campfire with your buddies talking bowhunting and whatever else may come to mind.

    Episode 44:
We are doing some Spring Cleaning - time to start now! No, we are not cleaning windows and wiping down kitchen cabinets.

We are talking about timber management, trail maintenance, hinge cutting, creating bedding areas, setting mock scrapes, trail camera maintenance, stand maintenance, and very importantly - bow maintenance.

This type of Spring Cleaning ain't for the yuppies.

How Europe funds illegal Russian logging, and why timber sanctions matter

How Europe funds illegal Russian logging, and why timber sanctions matter

With the invasion of Ukraine ongoing, Bertie talks to Sam Lawson, Director of investigative NGO Earthsight, following a public letter from 120 NGOs calling for a boycott on Russian and Belarusian wood.

The public letter was led by Ukrainian environmental groups in response to the invasion, but Earthsight have been investigating illegal and unsustainable Russian and Belarusian logging for years. Their work has exposed major failings of EU, UK, and US law, and particularly of certifiers like FSC, SBP and PEFC.

NOTE: this is a faster-moving story than we normally cover in our podcasts. Since recording this conversation on Tuesday 8th March, SBP and FSC have both announced that they are longer certifying Russian wood.

Special Edition: The Impact of 'Conflict Timber'

Special Edition: The Impact of 'Conflict Timber'

This is a special edition of FTMA’s F&T Time where we discuss the impacts on timber imports as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The Board of PEFC International have deemed all timber originating from Russia and Belarus as ‘conflict timber’. Whilst the FSC International Board of Directors have agreed to suspend all trading certificates in Russia and Belarus, as well as, block all controlled wood sourcing from the two countries.

We are joined by a number of guests to help break down what this all means.

    Guests include:

    • Simon Dorries of Responsible Wood (National governing body of PEFC in Australia)
    • Leon Quinn of Tilling Timber and
    • Kurt Schrammel of VIDA Australia

Ep 2: Advocacy & Policies with Ross Hampton

Ep 2: Advocacy & Policies with Ross Hampton

Our guest for the second episode of 'F&T Time with Kersten Gentle' is Ross Hampton, CEO of AFPA (Australian Forest Products Association).

With the upcoming federal election and a couple of crucial state elections this year, we thought it was valuable for Ross to come along and talk about the all-important policies for our industry and outline how everyone within the industry can have a voice in the lead up to these elections.

Ep 1: Riding the Wave with Tim Woods

Ep 1: Riding the Wave with Tim Woods

The first episode of the new FTMA News podcast series, 'F&T Time with Kersten Gentle' features Tim Woods of IndustryEdge as the journey of the timber and housing markets throughout the pandemic is discussed.

Tim explains the importance of a healthy supply chain and talks about ways builders and fabricators can ride the wave and survive.

So put your kettles on! It is time for some F&T (Frame & Truss Talk)!

Why bioenergy increases CO2 emissions even more than burning coal - with MIT's John Sterman

Why bioenergy increases CO2 emissions even more than burning coal - with MIT's John Sterman

Alasdair talks to John Sterman about his groundbreaking research that proved burning wood for energy will "increase atmospheric CO2 for at least a century".

John Sterman is the Jay W. Forrester Professor of Management at the MIT Sloan School of Management, the Director of the MIT System Dynamics Group and the Director of the MIT Sloan Sustainability Initiative. His team developed a model for dynamic bioenergy lifecycle analysis, which he hoped would prove burning "wood was part of the solution" for the climate. Instead, "it came out the other way".

    Tom Raffield on steam bending.

    Tom Raffield on steam bending.

Tom Raffield is a designer and maker who has built a hugely successful business by creating an array of products from wood that have been steam bent into extraordinary shapes, and, subsequently, are sold by the likes of John Lewis and Heals. In doing so, he has effectively brought craft on to the British high street.

Not only that, but he has designed installations at the Chelsea Flower Show, created steam bent coffee kiosks in London’s Royal Parks, and built his own breathtaking house in south Cornwall, that included (inevitably) a steam bent timber facade and featured on Channel Four’s Grand Designs.

It’s safe to say that wood is a material that completely dominates Tom’s life.

In this episode we talk about: designing through making; the importance of trial and error in his practice; growing up in a garden centre and his fascination with sustainability; how his dyslexia enabled him to see the world differently; falling in love with Cornwall; and his determination to make craft (relatively) affordable. But most of all we chat about his obsession with wood in general – and steam bending in particular – and how the process has shaped his life and career.

Chatham House's Duncan Brack on the huge emissions from burning US wood overseas

Chatham House's Duncan Brack on the huge emissions from burning US wood overseas

"In 2019, the use of United States sourced wood pellets in the UK was accountable for 16 million to 19 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, mostly burned by Drax. That is roughly equivalent to a quarter of all the emissions from the UK power sector."

Edward speaks to Duncan Brack, Associate Fellow at Chatham House and author of numerous reports into industrial-scale biomass  and forestry policy.

Is Drax UK's single biggest CO2 emitter?

Is Drax UK's single biggest CO2 emitter?

Alasdair talks to Phil MacDonald, Chief Operating Officer of energy think-tank Ember, about new analysis which places Drax as the UK's single biggest emitter of carbon dioxide in the UK and among the top 5 emitters in Europe.

Phil provides a startling explanation of how a huge amount of carbon emissions are being missed, and how incentives exist for governments to use biomass for power because of an apparent accounting loophole around its use.

How can we save our dying forests?

How can we save our dying forests?
Climate change and severe droughts have weakened forests around the globe. In Germany, where many forests are planted monocultures, about 80% of trees are considered unhealthy. What's even more alarming is that the forest dieback is also affecting younger trees now. So what happens if we lose our forests? And is there anything we can do to stop it?

Learning the Land: Episode 2 - Working Lands and Selective Timber Harvesting

Learning the Land: Episode 2 - Working Lands and Selective Timber Harvesting

In this episode of the Learning the Land podcast, we’re kicking off a three-part mini-series about our working lands! Specifically, how we integrate timber harvesting, cattle grazing, and farming into our land management plans.

Working lands can sometimes seem at odds with conservation goals, so we’re interviewing our Natural Resources Manager, Matthew Timmer, to get a better understanding of why it can be beneficial to protect AND work the land. Our focus in this episode is on our working forests to give you an inside look at sustainable timber harvesting and the important economic and stewardship role this practice plays in our work.
