MMHP Season 2 Ep: 18 Timm Ward--Michigan's Homespun Late Harvest Lost Treasure

Straight out of Essexville Michigan, the Ides Of March band leader Timmothy Ward rode the late '60s Michigan music scene with multiple singles (45's) and a cease and desist order direct from another band named Ides Of March out of Chicago. That didn't stop him from rocking his next band the Blues Company, more singles and constant regional touring. Then he hit the wall. Recording a homemade/studio collaboration album called Timmothy--Strange But True on his own Pear Records label (you know, not Apple), the 300 pressed 1972 album found its way into the cut out bins around Mid-Michigan. Including boxes from the man himself. Nowadays, a minty copy can fetch around $1000. It was reissued in the early '00's for an album-to-album printing, with Ward selling the rights for another limited 300 pressing. While not quite as powerful as the debut sonically, the album also contains his single 'Maybe I'm High', which outsold the original full-length as a 45 to collectors and hoisted Ward into a stratosphere that he didn't know he was even in. Here is his story, on the 50th Anniversary.

That’s right, we will be playing our drinking game but please remember the drinking game is only for those of us that are at home and have nowhere else to go tonight. So now for the game part… every time I say Timmothy that will be a single shot and every time I say Ohio, that will be a double shot. Alrighty heathens, now that we have that taken care of, we can settle in and dive into the mysterious disappearance of Timmothy Pitzen.

“You will never find him.” That was the startling claim in the suicide note discovered in a Rockford, Illinois hotel room the morning of May 14, 2011. Police said the note was penned by Amy Fry-Pitzen, the mother of 6-year-old Timmothy, who had been missing since Pitzen signed him out of his kindergarten class just three days earlier. Timmothy wasn’t with his mom when her body was found, but the note said he was safe, that he was with people who would care for him, but that he would never be found.

The Pitzens lived in Aurora, Illinois, and by all accounts were an average family. Timmothy was described as extroverted and energetic in the initial reports, a happy, playful child. Amy and her husband, Jim, were going through a rough patch, but Jim would later tell People Magazine that he had no clue what was coming. Jim said that Amy had previously survived a suicide attempt and had been taking medication for depression. He said the couple had been arguing before Timmothy’s disappearance because Amy took a cruise with a friend for her birthday, leaving Jim behind.
