    Timor-Leste

    Timor-Leste

The island of #timor is split. The west side of the island is part of Indonesia and the east part of the island is...East Timor AKA Timor-Leste if you're speakin Portuguese. And East Timor is EXACTLY where were going to on our 20th episode!!!

Despite it being a Portuguese colony for over 500 years, they've only been on their own official country for about 20. So it's still a baby when it comes to the official legislative country UN whatever mumbo-jumbo.

There are many things that make this place different than other Southeast Asian countries. They are Catholic. They eat pork. A percentage of the populations speaks Portuguese. They are kind of a fish out of water which is exactly what we get into!

You know the feeling, where you feel kind of out of place and don't belong? Yep, that's kind of like Timor-Leste.

We also get into eating sea mammals. Not that we condone ever eating a whale BUT if it was a life or death situation an you HAD TO eat a whale creature...some surely are more appealing than some others, right?! Maybe not. Who knows.

Have you been to Timor-Leste? Tell us what we missed or what we (hopefully) got right!

    Ramos-Horta (2ª parte)

    Ramos-Horta (2ª parte)

TAA 034: Hiking up East Timor's highest mountain to raise funds for people with disabilities
Combining my passion for the outdoors with a good cause. My work often brings me to countries in the tropics. Sometimes just for a few weeks. Sometimes for years. And while a high-tech knee is a great plus when it comes to being active and mobile, they soon hit their limits when water, sand, mud and rice paddies are involved. A simple backup option is needed. And often this can be done locally. As it was in my case, in Timor Leste back in 2009. Here is my story of how building a new prosthesis led to an amazing fundraising hike, that brought in enough money to support three local charities that support people with disabilities in Timor Leste.

    MoU PLS: Steak-holders speak

    MoU PLS: Steak-holders speak

How does the Pacific Labour Scheme (PLS) challenge the conception of what aid is, who works on it, and who benefits from it?

In the first part of the PLS mini-series, we profiled the hard yakka that is the daily grind inside Warrnambool’s meatworks. This episode we leave the factory gates and head out into the community to learn why the PLS is so much more than simple stratagem to fill gaps in Australia’s assembly lines. We cheer from the sidelines during a Timor-Leste versus Vietnam soccer match, dial home to see how the money earned at Midfields is being distributed and spent, celebrate Pedro Lay’s 40th birthday, share fish and chips with a remarkable Fijian woman called Ana, listen to a Timorese choir ring through the pews at local mass, and speak to our very own PLS fixer, Dr Michael Rose from The Development Policy Centre, about opportunities to expand the scheme.

Recommended reading: Feast your eyes on more meaty PLS content at DevPolicy, and read up on the Timorese experience in Warrnambool with a blog piece by Dr Michael Rose and another by East Timorese PLS worker Cornelio Dos Santos.

Something to workshop: Next week, The Development Policy Centre is hosting a one-day workshop on Pacific migration. To join in the discussion on regional labour markets, economic mobility, and social impacts of the various schemes, sign up here.

Behind the curtain: We are on air thanks to the ANU’s Development Policy Centre.
