Writer David West Read on & Juliet

Writer David West Read on & Juliet

Start with Shakespeare’s “star-crossed” lovers and fold in the songs of Swedish pop hitmaker Max Martin… what do you get? The hit Broadway musical & Juliet, currently running at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre in New York and nominated for nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Book of a Musical.

The show imagines what would happen if Juliet woke up after Romeo’s death and decided not to end it all. Instead, she goes on a trip to Paris with some new friends, including Shakespeare and Anne Hathaway. Juliet discovers that Romeo isn’t really dead… but he’s also not exactly boyfriend material. And every so often, the characters break into song with Max Martin’s hits for Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, and Katy Perry.

The writer behind this mash-up is David West Read. He previously served as writer and executive producer of the comedy series Schitt’s Creek, and he created The Big Door Prize and the forthcoming Brother from Another Mother, both running on AppleTV+. Host Barbara Bogaev talks with Read about & Juliet… and the concussion that inspired it.

Get tickets to & Juliet here, and tune in to the Tony Awards broadcast on Sunday, June 11, at 8 pm ET on CBS.

65: The Show Must Go Black with Broadway Producer Ron Simons
In 2021, after a wave of global unrest over racial injustice that followed the death of Houstonian George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police, a coalition of Broadway theater owners, union leaders, creators and casting directors outlined a series of reforms and commitments for the industry to ensure there would be equity and inclusion implemented in all of its new contractual agreements, including ways to help widen the talent pool to more diverse candidates. But for how long will this push for more diversity last? Are there any measures of tracking and accountability in place? And will audiences take notice and support those shows in ticket sales? Join us as I SEE U Host Eddie Robinson explores what’s really happening behind the curtain with actor and 4-time Tony Award-winning Broadway producer, Ron Simons. A former Microsoft executive, he’s also Founder and CEO of SimonSays Entertainment, a multiple award-winning production house and consultancy service for artists, producers and investors.

    Danny Burstein (Episode 65)

    Danny Burstein (Episode 65)
I recently described today's guest, the great Danny Burstein, as a glow worm. On stage, the man, truly, is lit from within. If you've ever seen him in anything, you know what I'm talking about. Whether the role is large or small, passionate or passive, when he's on stage, you can't take your eyes off of him, and you wouldn't want to--he's just magnetic that way. Danny began his career in New York in the early 90s taking a lot of small roles and understudy gigs. Then, a few years on, he made the terrifying decision that actors sometimes do--not to take any work that didn't challenge him artistically and advance him towards a more fulfilling career. Of course, we all know the rest. He went on to earn five Tony Award nominations for his work in such shows as 'The Drowsy Chaperone,' 'South Pacific,' 'Follies,' 'Golden Boy,' and 'Cabaret.' This season he's back on Broadway wowing audiences 8 times a week as Tevye in the stunning Bartlett Sher production of 'Fiddler on the Roof,' currently playing at the Broadway Theater. I know I say this a lot, but it really was an honor to get to sit with this man for forty minutes in his dressing room and talk about his amazing body of work. Enjoy!!!
