EP 667: Voices Within: Navigating the Mind's Mind

This podcast episode with Brian "Tosh" Chontosh focuses on the "mind's mind," the inner voice that shapes our thoughts and actions, often seeking comfort and leading to self-sabotage. Tosh emphasizes understanding this influence to improve decision-making and personal growth, particularly in endurance events.

"Diesel Days," derived from military training, combines physical challenges with lessons in leadership and teamwork. This 24-hour event pushes participants through physical and psychological trials, teaching them to navigate internal and external pressures, including an innovative "checking in with the left hand" technique for goal setting and self-reflection.  This is a strategy that you can use on a tough run, race or situation in life.

Tosh also discusses building mental resilience and life skills to counteract the mind's mind, highlighting the importance of a safe training environment for pushing limits and learning. The "Hard Way Project" offers a monthly subscription with workouts and methodologies to apply these concepts in practice.

Overall, the episode sheds light on overcoming the mind's mind through awareness, resilience, and competency development, offering practical tools for personal and professional growth.

EP 663: Endurance Lessons from Rowing Across the Atlantic

EP 663: Endurance Lessons from Rowing Across the Atlantic

We return to our 'Endurance Of The Trail" Series in this episode with our friend Major Brian "Tosh" Chontosh, United States Marine Corps, Retired.  He recounts his extraordinary journey of participating in The World's Roughest Row, rowing 3000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean with his team of former Navy SEALs despite their lack of prior experience in ocean rowing. He delves into the rigorous training, preparation, and dietary strategies that underpinned their endurance feat. Tosh underscores the critical role of team cohesion and the strategic guidance from their campaign manager. He reflects on the mental resilience needed to surmount challenges and draws parallels between his rowing venture and ultra-running principles, particularly in nutrition and the necessity to eschew distractions for peak performance. The discussion also explores the mental rigors of the Atlantic crossing, the imperative of setting clear goals, and the congruence between one's actions and objectives. Tosh concludes by touching on the broader implications of his experiences for physical endurance and leadership.

Reggae and Rockers with Niambe McIntosh & David Lopes

Reggae and Rockers with Niambe McIntosh & David Lopes
US cannabis culture has its roots deeply planted in reggae music. "Rockers" is the quintessential cult movie credited with introducing reggae music, Rastafarianism, and ganja to young American audiences in the 1970s. Before his death in 2015, the film's director Ted Bafaloukos penned an autobiography about his discovery of reggae in New York, and his experience shooting "Rockers" in Jamaica. In this episode, Brit talks to Gingko Press publisher David Lopes about the book "Rockers: The Making of Reggae's Most Iconic Film." Then, Brit talks to Niambe McIntosh, the youngest daughter of the late reggae legend Peter Tosh, founding member of The Wailers, to discuss the connection between the Rastafarian faith in Jamaica, weed, and reggae music.

2020 Is Hindsight; A Look Back At This Year's Guests

2020 Is Hindsight; A Look Back At This Year's Guests
Newsflash; 2020 has been a heck of a year! Since Different Leaf the Podcast started just a few weeks before the COVID-19 pandemic began, we've been here to track exactly how this year impacted the world of weed.

For our End Of The Year episode, we're checking back in with some amazing guests from our earlier episodes.

In episode 4, when the recreational pot shops first closed down in Massachusetts, host Brit Smith talked to Dr. Peter Grinspoon about what consumers had to do if they couldn't afford a medical card, and how people with a history of addiction, like Brit and Dr Grinspoon, could remain steady during the pandemic.

In episode 8, as tensions grew over the police-involved killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, Brit had an important conversation with Niambe McIntosh, daughter of reggae legend Peter Tosh, about the impact of the war on drugs on communities of color.

And in episode 10, we got to learn from cannabis educator Emma Chasen, who taught us the science of how cannabis gets humans high.

"Nicholas only knows the most boring places."

He's obviously not acquainted with the Doctor's wardrobe then, which contains... Who knows what?

And there's plenty going on in the rest of 16th Century Paris, with a familiar-looking priestly weirdo, a companion's possible ancestor and man-hungry sectarian rats.

The Doctor may or may not be in the house but Steven finds that Preslin, the King of germinology, has definitely left the building.

What's the Doctor hiding about his mysterious continental city break?

Does what happens in Paris stay in Paris?

Should Chaplet or Chaplet get a ride in the TARDIS?

Did Jim and Martin find The Massacre a mind-broadening trip or a four-part death sentence?

And what did Peter Purves think of The Massacre and his time on the show?
