Today's trains are not only a part of the green "slow travel" movement, they can be ultra-fast and super deluxe. Lea and Guest Yi Ding, a Eurail executive, share train tips and trips, from speedy, efficient Eurail to the luxury private train tours of the world. Riding the rails proves it's the journey, not just the destination.
We first discuss all about Eurail, which connects Europe through trains and ferries. We offer tips, scheduling, scenic routes, night trains and ferry passes.
Lea then describes 14 private trains focused on luxury, with reclaimed vintage carriage cars, fine dining and luxury bedding only a part of the ride: the Venice-Simplon Orient Express, the Royal Canadian Pacific, the Palace on Wheels, The Golden Eagle Trans-Siberian Express, the Belmond Hiram Bingham, Inca Rail, Belmond Andean Explorer, Belmond Royal Scotsman, the Transcantabrico Classico, The Pride of Africa Rovos Rail, The Palace on Wheels, the Belmond Eastern & Oriental Express, The Belmond English panel, The Ghan and The Rocky Mountaineer.
And of course, we end with a special memory of a train ride.
_____
Yi Ding was born in Beijing, and considers herself a citizen of the world having traveled in close to 50 countries and being based in Europe for ten years. She currently lives in the Netherlands, Eurail’s headquarters. She has focused on building the awareness of Eurail and its rail passes.
_____
Podcast host Lea Lane blogs at forbes.com, has traveled to over 100 countries, written nine books, including Places I Remember, and contributed to many guidebooks.

Cheryl B Engelhardt is a marine biologist turned bestselling New Age artist and composer from New York. She holds the unofficial title of being the first person to make an entire album on a cross-country train in the USA.
What started as a cheaper way to travel to the Grammys ended up being a 9-day round trip from New York to LA after the event was cancelled during the pandemic. Cheryl produced her twelve-track album - aptly named The Passenger - whilst winding through the Rocky mountains, past enchanting frozen lakes and herds of wild Elk streaking through the valleys.
Find out more about Cheryl’s journey and how it inspired the music as well as the Grammys from an insider’s perspective, her dodgy gig in Germany, a hairy helicopter ride in Hawaii, and travelling the world with social justice choirs.

Once a frequent flyer and jetting off to Europe most weekends, editor at The Independent Travel, Helen Coffey, quit flying for a year in 2020. She's now written a book about her flight-free adventures and the impact of the aviation industry on the planet.
Throughout the pandemic, ‘build back better’ has been the buzz phrase as the travel industry had time to reflect during lockdown on its impact on the planet. But traveling more sustainably is easier said than done - especially when flights are often cheaper and more convenient.
Helen makes it sounds totally doable as she reflects on her experience of using trains, bikes and hitch-hiking (among other modes of transport) to reach Croatia, Amsterdam and even Morocco. She also shares her tips for trying flight-free travel for the first time.
Helen's part-memoir, part investigation: Zero Altitude: How I learned to fly less and travel more is due out on 26th May 2022.

"These are the days that must happen to you” - Walt Whitman
Welcome to Episode #48
Ciao from Italy,
Salutations and greetings from the beautiful city of Parma in the region of Emilia Romagna, Italy. I was sitting in front of the Palazzo del Governatore on Strada Garibaldi at an outdoor cafe, O' Bistro in the piazza, when I decided to record this travel share. In other words, this is a little on the wing, in the moment situation.
Travel is always full of big and small moments and this is a reflection on recent days. Traveling from Venice in the beautiful Veneto region to Bologna, and then on to Parma an hour away. I also share the story of my days in Ravenna where I traveled to see the art treasures of the Byzantine Empire....
Enjoy,
Michelle xo

'We’d started East, taking the DLR to the first of a series of events for the London Open House weekend.
We had traversed the city by foot, on the river bank, imagining life in a river boat, garden on the roof, sun loungers folded neatly at the side, a pandemonium of flower pots hanging from each window. '
Today's episode, initiated by the story of a lost pink unicorn, includes a discussion on the spaces we live in. We ask who our buildings and shared spaces are designed for, who is excluded from our designed environment, and what effect this has on the communities who live there.
This is EPISODE 3 of series 4 – The Series of Things.
This new series is called: THE STORIES OF THINGS and it features stories of those things that are meaningful in our lives.
We would love for this series to be collaborative, and we invite you to bring your stories to the fold!
Please share the stories of those things that are not just things here or send me an Instagram message.
The show is currently unfunded. To ensure we can provide a whole series, please support us.
