    Episode Notes

In this podcast episode, Cem Dilmegani and Sean Martin discuss the various types of fraud that exist and how machine learning can be utilized by both fraudsters and companies to outsmart each other.

The conversation delves into the world of fraud and its impact across various domains, from financial systems to advertising and even healthcare. The discussion highlights how fraudsters are using sophisticated techniques, such as machine learning and automation, to bypass rules-based systems and carry out illicit transactions or manipulate user behavior.

The conversation shifts to the financial services industry, where Cem explains how illicit actors might use automation to transfer funds through smaller transactions to avoid detection or bypass sanctions. They also discuss the challenges faced by banks in identifying fraudulent transactions and the complexities involved when dealing with nation-state actors.

Sean brings up the concept of open-source intelligence (OSINT) in the cybersecurity world and wonders if there's a similar database for fraud rules and vulnerabilities in the financial world. Cem explains that while OSINT might not be as powerful in the world of fraud, fraudsters can still find ways to exploit systems and bypass controls.

Throughout the conversation, intriguing use cases are presented, such as ad fraud in the B2B tech industry, where competitors employ machine-generated clicks and utilize bots to drain marketing budgets, or the concept of "feature fraud," where malicious actors manipulate user feedback to drive companies in the wrong direction.

The episode also delves into the challenges faced by the healthcare industry, including insurance fraud, where patients are overcharged for services or billed for therapies they never received. In the financial services realm, fraudsters resort to account takeovers, complex transaction models, and even shell entities to bypass security measures.

The discussion also highlights the ever-evolving world of fraud, emphasizing the need for businesses and industries to leverage advanced technologies, like AI and machine learning, to stay ahead of the curve and protect themselves from these sophisticated threats. This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in understanding the simple complexities of fraud and the countermeasures that can be employed to mitigate its impact.

Dustin Loeffler and Matt DiSanto - Aon

Dustin Loeffler and Matt DiSanto - Aon

We have two guests joining us this week: Dustin Loeffler, Managing Director and Head of U.S. Legacy Reinsurance Solutions at Aon, and Matt DiSanto, Associate Director of Reinsurance Solutions, Capital Advisory, also at Aon.

When we turned to the topic of bringing new talent into the legacy space, Dustin had some data for us. He cited a survey created by Ward that said 70% of the companies surveyed (focusing primarily on P&C, life and health carriers) were looking to increase staff over the next year, but 48% of the companies surveyed were finding it increasingly difficult to hire talent in 2022. Matt noted that many roles in legacy are "highly specialized...in a very niche industry," which can make talent recruitment "somewhat of an uphill battle." But not everything is doom and gloom. One way to bring new talent into legacy is to bring new talent into the industry as a whole. Dustin and Matt were both eager to discuss the Aon Apprenticeship Program, which  combines academic instruction with on-the-job training. The program reduces the barriers of entry to the insurance industry and could be a useful blueprint for other companies looking to develop and expand the talent pool.

Concordium is a public-layer 1, science-backed blockchain, designed to balance privacy with accountability through its ID layer. The protocol level ID, ensures that every wallet is associated with a real-world identity that has been verified through a third party ID provider, so that people and companies can trust one another, while remaining private, with zero-knowledge-proof. With safe transactions, Concordium can unlock a global, multi-trillion-dollar economy, so bankers to regulators actually want to use blockchain.

Concordium offers unique and global ID credentials for DeFi degens, metaverse players, and gamers, available to smart contracts, whilst preserving privacy. This, according to them, is the key to the mass migration of web2 to web3 and beyond.

Concordium’s native coin, CCD, is used for paying transaction fees, staking, rewards for node operators, and as a collateral/settlement medium for Concordium’s DeFi landscape.

With leadership from Volvo, IKEA, Credit Suisse, and 52M EUR raised to date, the team is now scaling the chain to their extensive network of the world's biggest enterprises.

    And, how about hidden agendas?
    Oh no…🙈 Don’t look there.

Almost everyone is doing “transaction” of some form or another. What are the transactions that you enter into, knowingly (or unknowingly), and what impact do they currently have on your life?

In this episode, you will begin to expose the places where you and others are operating from transaction.  What if you could discover how to not only get everything you desire, but never be surprised or disappointed again?

    Let’s go!

LIFE HACKS FEATURED IN THIS EPISODE

    • Get the elephant off your head, ask: Who does this belong to?
    • Expand out - Expand your space and ask: What space can I be to have freedom beyond this?
    • Eliminate the word “want” from your vocabulary
    • Ask: What is the transaction I am entering into? What is the transaction they are entering into?
