Fiona Kolbinger - The Transcontinental Race 2022

Drei Jahre ist es her, dass Fiona Kolbinger beim Transcontinental Race Geschichte schrieb. 2019 sicherte sie sich als erste Frau den Sieg in der Gesamtwertung des legendären „Selfsupport Ultra Cycling Rennens“. Ich durfte sie nach ihrem beeindruckenden Wettkampf interviewen und freue mich sehr darüber, sie seitdem regelmäßig als Gästin in der Wundersamen Fahrradwelt zu begrüßen. Das Event pausierte zwei Jahre aufgrund der Pandemie, doch im Juli dieses Jahres war es wieder so weit: Der Startschuss für das TCR fiel erneut und Fiona wiederholte ihre Teilnahme. Trotz diverser Widrigkeiten (seid gespannt bei Stichworten wie Singlespeed und Polizeikontakt), meisterte sie das herausfordernden Rennen mit einer faszinierenden Leichtigkeit. Wer kann schon von sich behaupten, kurz vor dem Ziel noch einbeinige Kniebeugen machen zu können? Und dann noch das Rennen als schnellste Frau und in den Top 10 der Gesamtwertung zu finishen? Das F in Fiona steht wohl definitiv für die „Freude am langen Fahrradfahren“. Wer an dieser Freude teilhaben mag und erfahren möchte was es mit ihrer Erfindung von „Ohrhängen“ auf sich hat der*die höre doch das spannende Interview und lasse sich einmal quer über den Kontinent mitnehmen. Special: Science Edition - Share Your Experience!

Let's do some science! A lot of us long-distance cyclists have been wondering about the physical symptoms that occur during ultracycling – it would be great if as many of you as possible could participate in this: https://www.soscisurvey.de/ultra-effects/ Many of you seem to have experienced symptoms that could be related to changes in kidney function, e.g. water retention or urine changes. Together with Dr. Philipp Gauckler, a nephrologist and Jana Kesenheimer, a psychologist, I would like to invite you to participate in a scientific survey exploring all these symptoms in a bit more detail. Through this survey, we hope to shed light on the occurrence and (perceived) severity of such symptoms and identify potential associations between sociodemographic or cycling-/race-related factors that contribute to the development of such symptoms (e.g. does age, gender or the kind and amount of drinks we consume during races affect the occurrence and severity of these symptoms?). As we are also asking for some (anonymous) demographic data in the end of the survey, this study could also give us a few more detailed numbers on the community in general. Therefore, it would be great if you could forward this to as many people as possible! This survey is open to anyone who has done at least one “long” tour, the definition of which is up to you (we will be asking for your specific ride in the beginning). Of course, you can also participate if you did not have any symptoms at all (in fact, this would be important to be able to quantify how many of us actually develop such symptoms at all). Dr. Fiona Kolbinger - Wie gehst du mit Grenzsituationen um?

Dr. Fiona Kolbinger gewann als erste Frau die Gesamtwertung des Transcontinental Race in 2019. Nun beehrt sie die Wundersame Fahrradwelt mit einem zweiten Besuch. Was ist seit ihrem legendären Sieg passiert? Wie ist Fiona Kolbinger mit der medialen Aufmerksamkeit umgegangen und kommt sie mit ihrem Vollzeitjob als Ärztin überhaupt noch zum Radfahren? Spoiler: Ja! Sie fuhr dieses Jahr das Elbspitzenbrevet und hat die Swiss Ultra Cycling Challenge gewonnen. Außerdem ist sie zusammen mit Kollegen die Radrennstrecke des Stoneman Miriquidi Road gefahren, um Spenden für neue Ergometer für Krebspatienten einzuwerben. Aber auch wissenschaftlich geht es hoch her. Fiona Kolbinger liefert, 1,5 Jahre nachdem hier im Podcast drüber gesprochen wurde, einen Erklärungsansatz dafür, wie Wassereinlagerungen bei intensiven Ultraevents entstehen könnten. Episode 1 - with Jenny Graham, Fiona Kolbinger and James Hayden

In this first Episode of the Endurance podcast Laura and Mark chat to Jenny Graham, Fiona Kolbinger and James Hayden, three well-known names in the ultra-endurance road cycling world.

Jenny holds the female Guinness World record for the fastest circumnavigation by bicycle - 124 Days, 10 hours and 50 minutes. Jenny is also part of the Adventure Syndicate (a collective of female endurance cyclists) and presenter on Global Cycling Network.

Fiona was the winner of the Transcontinental Race (across Europe) in 2019, beating a field of 224 men and 40 women. She also recently graduated as a Doctor.

James has won back-to-back Transcontinental titles and has now shifted his focus more to off-road ultra-endurance bike packing adventures.
