Fiona Kolbinger - The Transcontinental Race 2022
Chinese and the Transcontinental Railroad
Welcome to Season 2, Episode 9! We begin with a few words on the Ukraine situation and our memories of trains. The main story is on something that will seem familiar to many U.S. taught students… The Chinese and the first Transcontinental Railroad. Chinese laborers were key in the building of the transcontinental railroad, all while facing discrimination and danger. We close out the episode with a Winter Olympics wrap-up. To learn more about the Chinese and the railroad, visit Chinese Railroad Workers in North America Project or the Chinese Railroad Workers Descendants Association. This is the final episode in a 3-part magazine mini-series. Each episode features a conversation with amazing people doing amazing work in the world of magazine production and publishing. In this episode, Darren Halliday, Sales Director for Canada’s largest magazine printer shares his insights about the printed medium and the business of printed magazines. He shares some very hopeful information for small, niche magazine publishers; namely that you don’t have to have a huge following to be successful and the printing industry is better equipped than ever before to support independent publishers.
