Bonus - The Art & Science of Star Trek

Three "Treksperts" on the making of one of entertainment’s greatest franchises. They discuss the show’s portrayal of science and technology, its influence on real-world advancements—from Motorola's flip phones to the concept of warp drive—and its trailblazing shift from episodic to serial storytelling. They also explore the role of science advisories in making the show plausible, and how Star Trek modeled inclusivity and challenged societal stereotypes.

    Guests:

Mark A. Altman — showrunner of the TV series “Pandora,” writer/producer of the film “Free Enterprise,” and co-author of the bestselling “The Fifty-Year Mission: The Complete, Uncensored, Unauthorized Oral History of Star Trek: The First 25 Years.” Mark is also the co-host and producer of the podcast, “Inglorious Treksperts.”

André Bormanis — television producer, screenwriter, and author of “Star Trek: Science Logs.”  André was the science consultant on “Star Trek: The Next Generation”; “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine”; “Star Trek: Voyager”; and “Star Trek: Enterprise.” André serves as science consultant and writer-producer on The Orville (Fox). He holds a BS in Physics.

Tom Vitale (moderator, Williams ’86) — Tom headed programming and production at the SciFi Channel for 20 years. He is currently a television and film writer/producer specializing in science fiction, fantasy, and horror/supernatural. He runs Vital Signs Entertainment and is the co-creator with Mark Altman of “Pandora.”

Recorded over Zoom in March 2021.

August 1975: The August Party Becomes the First Fan Con

August 1975: The August Party Becomes the First Fan Con

Live long and prosper! (Again!) This week, it's another Star Trek deep dive as Emily tells V the heartwarming, weep-inducing tale of the August Party, the first Star Trek fan con. With the cutest quotes and reminiscences in the world, and a wealth of people being NERDS to boot, this is a delightful event in fannish history and one we're glad to have gotten to learn about! Have you ever attended a fan con (as opposed to a commercial con)? Did you go to the August Party??

21- Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1980s)

21- Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1980s)

In this episode Kieran, Paul and I kick off #mysummerofstartrek with coverage of 'Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan' from director Nicholas Meyer. And 'what is #mysummerofstartrek' I hear you ask, why it's us covering all the 1980s Star Trek films over the coming month or two (maybe delving into some Trek TV too....).

Just as a bit of backstory to the ep, Paul and Kieran are long-time Trekkies while I am not (I make several X-Men comparisons in this episode as that was my franchise rather than this). Back in 2017 (I think) we covered 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture' as part of our 1970s coverage- that was the first time I had seen that film and likewise, this was my first watch of Wrath of Khan (I watched all the Prime Universe films just prior to recording this episode). So join us next time for.....  'Star Trek III: The Search for Spock'!

Oh, and shoutout to friends of the podcast Spocklight: A Star Trek Podcast who get mentioned during the podcast, who do great coverage of all the Star Trek films and the different TV shows too. Recommended listening!

Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 5 Discussion | TrekChatz 05

Episode 5 of TrekChatz is here! How does Season 5 of TNG compare to the series' best so far? What themes did the TrekChatzKidz find throughout the season? And WHY haven't they made an animated short about Guinan and her imaginary friend yet? Where can I buy Ro Laren's cool headband? Why does a flute solo make us question our very existence on this planet? Find out ALL of that and more in this incredibly meaty discussion of the season.

Empowerment is a choice- with Pam Bright and her special guest and partner for life- David Buck

Empowerment is definitely a choice worth making.  It is not always an easy one to make, but definitely worthwhile.  How can you make this a way of life?  How can you train yourself to notice when your choices are not empowering?

Pam and David will be sharing with you their recent EPIC JOURNEY and how they chose to spend each day as the empowering adventure that it definitely was.

You will get to hear how they chose adventure and fun in adverse conditions; rather than experiencing victimhood and problems.

They will share with you how they allowied themselves to RECEIVE in massive ways on a daily basis.

They will be sharing with you how a vacation can be an opportunity for huge growth and change in the venue of massive fun and comraderie.

Le Quadrant Pop #68 - Star Trek Picard : The Next Next Generation (S3 Ep01)

Le Quadrant Pop #68 - Star Trek Picard : The Next Next Generation (S3 Ep01)

Best in Star Trek - Tournament Bracket, Part 2

For the second time, the trio decides (for good!) who's the best character in Star Trek! This time, we debate and choose "the best" in two categories: Best first officer and best conn officer. Once again, the trio uses tournament brackets (aka March Madness) to winnow down the "best" characters by their jobs. We begin with an "elite eight" from across the entire Trek franchise - leading so some lopsided match-ups, some surprising upsets, and some real 50/50 decisions.

Let us know if you agree with our determinations - and find out who's the "best"!

#410: Denise Crosby from Star Trek: TNG and Trekkies!
From Star Trek: The Next Generation, actress Denise Crosby is here! In addition to Trek talk (TNG and her documentary Trekkies), we’re chattin’ about Hollywood tales of Blake Edwards and Peter Sellers, playing a supervillain on Lois & Clark, hangin’ out with The Flash, her connection to “Who shot J.R.?”, and whether or not she’d like to return to the world of Star Trek.

"Lower Decks" - Where Pleasant Fountains Lie

The Cerritos crew encounters a Ren Faire-class ship that happens to be the home race of the ship's chief engineer - and Jeffrey Combs guest stars as an evil computer. What more could you ask from an episode of "Lower Decks"? Season two continues providing adventures with Boimler/Mariner and Rutherford/Tendi pair-ups, along with misadventures from the bridge crew. Our trio examines the ins and outs of this episode, and what made them laugh. What was your favorite part?

"Lower Decks" - We'll Always Have Tom Paris

They got our e-mails! Or at least listened to our podcasts.

Okay, maybe the writers of "Lower Decks" just know what they are doing. But the third episode of season two finally brings "new pairings" for our intrepid ensigns on the Cerritos. We get Mariner and Tendi on a misadventure, Rutherford fighting against finding the truth about Lt. Shaxs', and Boimler crawling thru Jeffries tubes accompanied by his VOY-themed collector plate. There's something for everyone (though the trio disagree about what exactly works) in this episode. What was your favorite storyline? And how did you enjoy the return of Lieutenant Paris (in non-plate form)?

    229 - I Love My Job
    "Lower Decks" - Strange Energies

It's back! The wacky crew of the starship Cerritos returns in their second season opener with an episode that catches up new viewers and entertains existing fans. The trio look at how a mostly Boimler-less episode holds up, and what made them laugh the most. Did the B story overshadow the A story? How much Captain Freeman/Ensign Mariner arguing is there? And how much do we love the Titan? Maybe enough to blow our heads into space. Let us know what you think of this season two kick-off story!

    221 - Star Trek: Cadets, Part 2
Star Trek Series Pitch, Part 2

Last episode, the trio pitched a new Trek series set on an alien Starfleet Academy-based campus. The fresh-faced class of cadets, along with some familiar faces as professors, established a series promising adventure and drama. But now it's time to go deeper! The trio looks closer at their characters, fleshes out the world of this Academy (along with a "driver's ed" starship), and looks at what season one would bring. Let us know your favorite characters and what storylines would make "Star Trek: Cadets" a great entry into the Star Trek franchise.

It is no secret that the trio loves "Star Trek: First Contact." But what if ... Captain Sisko had commanded the U.S.S. Defiant during the Borg invasion? In this re-imagining of the second TNG film, Sisko, Chief O'Brien, and Lt. Cmdr. Worf all join the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise-E to fight the Borg, save Zephram Cochrane, and help Lily.
