    June 9, 1973 - The Belmont Stakes

    June 9, 1973 - The Belmont Stakes

The 1973 Belmont Stakes is widely considered the best horse race ever. Not simply because of the fact that Secretariat completed his Triple Crown quest, but the fashion in which he did it.

On this week's episode, we watch the final broadcast of Secretariat’s historic accomplishment. Jack Whitaker, Haywood, and Chick Anderson are back to guide us through this historical sports moment and do an excellent job at that.

    On this episode we discuss:
    • The awkward interviews w/ the jockeys immediately after they are weighed
    • Jack Whitaker's epic intro dissecting the infield at Pimlico
    • Is hay fever still a thing?
    • The Belmont song we never knew existed
    • Interviews with Turcotte, Laurin, and Tweedy after the win
    • The iconic moments from this race that still live in sports lure today
    • Sham’s disappointing race
    • much more....

NHL Playoffs, Memorial Tournament, Belmont Stakes with Brian Blessing June 1, 2021

NHL Playoffs, Memorial Tournament, Belmont Stakes with Brian Blessing June 1, 2021
Host Adam Burke and our weekly Tuesday guest Brian Blessing covered a lot of ground once again. They always do, but today’s topics were the NHL Playoffs, the Memorial Tournament, and also the Belmont Stakes. Adam and Brian hit every playoff series and talked about the upcoming games in the NHL, including Lightning vs. Hurricanes tonight and Vegas vs. Colorado and Montreal vs. Winnipeg on Wednesday.

The Memorial Tournament will look a bit different with some alterations to the course at Muirfield Village this week, so the guys hit on those changes and also a list of players that they expect to do well and compete. On the horse racing side, the Belmont Stakes only has eight horses in the field, but Adam and Brian talked about strategies and also which horses profile the best on the longest leg of the Triple Crown.

    May 19, 1973 - The Preakness Stakes

    May 19, 1973 - The Preakness Stakes

We continue our look back at the 1973 Triple Crown run by Secretariat with the CBS broadcast of the 1973 Preakness Stakes.

Once again, we were impressed by the broadcast and the group of announcers on the call. Add that to the amazing performance by Secretariat and you have an event worth watching.

    On this episode we discuss:

    - The controversy over Secretariat's time which didn't have a conclusion until 2012
    - Haywood getting up close and personal during an intimate moment
    - Laffit Pincay and his honest assessment of Sham's chances in the Belmont
    - Jack Whitaker's epic intro dissecting the infield at Pimlico
    - The barely legible Daily Racing Form
    - much more....

    May 5, 1973 - The Kentucky Derby

    May 5, 1973 - The Kentucky Derby

The 1973 Kentucky Derby featured not only the most famous thoroughbred racing horse of all time in Secretariat, but a worthy field that featured the likes of Sham and Angle Light - both of whom beat the superhorse just two weeks before in the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct Racetrack in New York.

The horse racing world watched to see if Secretariat, the 1972 Horse of the Year, could live up to the lofty expectations bestowed upon him. Secretariat was ridden by jockey Ron Turcotte, trained by Lucien Lauren and owned by a syndicate headlined by Penny Chenery of Meadow Farm, this same trio also brought along Riva Ridge who had won the Derby and Belmont Stakes the year prior.

In this episode we went back and watched the original CBS broadcast and discussed:
    • The lead up to the race for Secretariat
    • Jack Whitaker being a bad ass
    • The cast of characters that led the broadcast
    • Mike's Laffit Pincay bobblehead
    • The Sham/Secretariat rivalry
    • The new Kentucky Derby record set by Secretariat
    • Has the broadcast of the race changed much in 50 years?
    • Sham losing two teeth
    • much more...

2019 Belmont Stakes Betting Preview & Podcast

2019 Belmont Stakes Betting Preview & Podcast
There is no Triple Crown at stake this week, but the Belmont Stakes is a fascinating and complex handicap. Host Adam Burke enlisted the assistance of horse betting expert Brian Blessing to break down the 10-horse field for Saturday’s race. The guys looked at favorites Tacitus and War of Will and wound up talking themselves into some of the double-digit shots on the card.

They talked about the key betting angles and tips to remember with the longest race that most of these horses will run in their careers. They looked at some exotic wagering angles and talked about all 10 of the horses and looked at strengths and weaknesses. Finally, the guys discussed the Acorn Stakes very briefly, with an interesting field for Saturday afternoon’s filly race.
