Lanhee Chen: Healthcare and the 2018 Agenda

Lanhee Chen: Healthcare and the 2018 Agenda

As the Republican-led Congress plans the 2018 legislative agenda, healthcare needs to continue to be a top priority.

Health premiums continue are soaring, and millions of people have little or no choice of health insurance. Millions of people who once could afford coverage no longer can, and many find that their health insurance premiums cost more than their mortgage or rent payments.

In a new Associated Press-NORC poll, nearly half of Americans said health care is their primary concern for 2018, topping taxes, immigration, education, and the environment by more than 15 percent.

Obamacare has failed miserably in fulfilling the last administration’s promise to cut health costs. The typical American worker now must devote roughly twice as many work hours to cover health costs as to pay for food.

Individuals need to be empowered with greater flexibility and choice. And states are better equipped than Washington to oversee their health insurance markets. This requires legislative action from Congress for these new and better choices.

The (Uncertain) Future of Women's Reproductive Health Care
A panel of experts in health policy and women's health programs discuss how maternal and child health care, family planning and reproductive health services may be affected by potential changes coming out of Washington—both through the American Health Care Act (AHCA) and administrative actions. The Reluctant Activist

    The Reluctant Activist
In this week's show our guest is Aliza Geretz who is a health care advocate. A progressive who is concerned enough to contact her congressmen and representatives. She was present at Ted Cruz’s town hall meeting which involved defunding and replacing the Veterans Affairs Administration with private contractors or providing veterans with the opportunity to use other hospitals or clinics for their healthcare. Aliza is currently a Houston resident, her Representative is John Culberson and her two senators are Ted Cruz and John Cornyn. Cornyn was ranked by National Journal as the fourteenth-most conservative United States Senator in 2013.She wrote a letter to the editor to the following article http://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/houston/article/Cruz-VA-reform-bill-would-introduce-health-care-11275267.php?cmpid=email-mobileThe entire tone of the article feels like a PR piece for Cruz. Cruz claims he held a town hall, which Jeremy repeats without question. More like town small — somehow I snagged one of the 64 seats.Questions from constituents? Not really. Cruz took a handful of questions which were hand-picked by the moderator: an employee of the Koch brothers.Jeremy’s point that Cruz had “hardly any interruptions” left out the fact that anyone who spoke up or held signs was immediately asked to leave by staffers and security lining the room.I was most bothered by Jeremy’s statement that “a few critics in Houston did infiltrate the hotel ballroom.” Infiltrate? The half of the room with hard questions for Cruz had every right to be there, even if the event was inadequate and tightly controlled. Finally, I counted a lot more than “200 people” at O’Rourke’s open event that same day. Maybe that’s the difference between a Senator who is in the pocket of wealthy donors like the Kochs, and a grassroots candidate who will work for the people of Texas.https://www.click2houston.com/news/sen-ted-cruz-speaks-with-cva-at-town-hall-meeting-in-houston

UK Election, Trumpcare & Positive Liberty

UK Election, Trumpcare & Positive Liberty
12 June 2017 - While the results of the snap election in the UK were not quite as unexpected as the most recent US election, they came close. Recovering politician and the founder of English Scotts for YES, Math Campbell (@MathCampbell and @EnglishScottsForYES) joins us to sort out the chaos. We take extra time to really understand why British PM Theresa May opted to form a coalition government with the terrorist affiliated political party from Northern Ireland, the Democratic Unionist Party. Since this tipping of the delicate balance in Northern Ireland toward the unionists and away from the republicans could potentially re-ignite the Troubles it seemed worth our time. Math and Will also dissect the voter turnout problem in Scotland and, like the 70,000 voters in the upper Midwest who tipped the entire US election, they cover why the SNP voters who stayed home made such an outsized difference in the result nationwide. We begin with our new weekly segment, the Lying Liar Lie of the Week. Arliss' competitor was proposed by listener @bosengood. Apparently, David Brooks thinks the Flynn/Russia matter had little to do with why Trump fired Comey! Will rejoined with Trump assuring us that he is 100% happy to testify under oath. (Sure you are, Donald.) The American Health Care Act (AHCA / Trumpcare) is back with a vengeance and I went over what we think is in this bill and why the AHCA is incredibly bad even for those with health insurance through their employer. Ben Winkler, of MoveOn.org, has a truly excellent set of instructions and tips for how to optimize a call to your senators and how to #resist. Will got way back to basics, all the way back to Thomas Paine (and further) talking about the principle of positive liberty and why it is this basic core value which distinguishes progressives from conservatives. Positive liberty is about having the capacity to create real opportunity versus the negative liberty principle of not being prevented from achieving an outcome. Positive liberty is why progressives believe in basic rights and is at the heart of the healthcare debate. On a side note, Will and I have begun speaking with some folks who have come forward to volunteer to join the Hopping Mad team. If you are interested please let us know. We are serious about adding more voices. Carrots! - Arliss

Trumpcare and Obamacare, the Truth Behind the Headlines

Trumpcare and Obamacare, the Truth Behind the Headlines
In this edition (May 2017) I talk with Matt Penziner, Executive Director, NYUPN Clinically Integrated Network, about the repeal of the Affordable Healthcare Act and its impact on patients. Matt and I discuss the facts surrounding “repeal and replace”, the odds healthcare legislation pass the Senate, and if so, what will it look like, how patients expect their costs to change, if preexisting conditions will be covered or not, and the overall cost of healthcare in the economy. The Strong Stance: The State of Queer Public Health

The Strong Stance: The State of Queer Public Health

With the recent House passing of the American Health Care Act (AHCA), the state of queer public health is even more unsure and in danger. Part of what AHCA does, and what has caused the loudest outrage, is make it more difficult for folks with pre-existing conditions to get and keep adequate and affordable health insurance, and by extension, healthcare. A few items that have been listed as pre-existing conditions by the Kaiser Family Foundation include AIDS, HIV, “sexual deviation or disorder”, and transexualism. Obviously these particular ones disproportionately affect the queer and trans communities, in addition to all the normal health concerns that anyone else has.
On this episode I am joined by two special guests to discuss queer public health and their new podcast, aptly named ‘The Queer Public Health Podcast’: Tiffany Mott-Smith and Kris Oseth.

Bi-partisan Healthcare Reform with Kathleen Sebelius

Bi-partisan Healthcare Reform with Kathleen Sebelius
Kathleen Sebelius, former United States Secretary of Health and Human Services, is credited with successfully shepherding the Affordable Care Act through a divided Congress. She joins us this week to talk about improvements to ACA on which both Republicans and Democrats might agree and build upon. As Ryan and the White House get ready to take another run at healthcare reform, are there provisions in the new bill which are clearly needed? Listen now to find out from a woman who is not only one of the most knowledgeable experts on Obamacare, but who is also widely respected for her bi-partisan approach.
