    Welcome to Episode 72!

Yes, we know we say episode 73, but that's because we lost yet an episode in between this and the last. Just pretend we're saying another number. Like 72 for instance.

Anyways, today Nate and Mitch discuss meeting up in person for the first time in a long time. They went to a hip hop show in Minneapolis and had a pretty wild evening. They listened to a lot of Nickelback that weekend and got into a few other things. The conversation veers all over the place as it normally does so enjoy the ride!

Friends and family love us, so, feel free to share this with them!

Welcome to JazzPianoSkills, I'm Dr. Bob Lawrence. It’s time to Discover, Learn, and Play jazz piano!

I am happy to share my interview with jazz pianist and composer Martin Listabarth - an up-and-coming young lion in the jazz world.

Martin resides in Vienna, Austria, and has just released his second solo album called “Dedicated” in which he dives deep into the topic of personal inspirations, resulting in an album that combines tonal elegance and musical ingenuity with playfulness, wit, and a heavy dose of storytelling.

Now, of course, It’s not unusual for a musician to dedicate an album or song to someone that has been influential in their life but Martin takes it a step further, using the story of 10 people who’ve fascinated or inspired him as the basis of 10 highly original compositions. It’s fantastic and I’m telling you right now - you will be captivated when listening!

Musically speaking, one jazz critic rightfully notates Martin Listabarth's album Dedicated, “it’s a treasure trove of solo piano technique, running the full spectrum from soft and melancholic to dramatic and bold. Shimmering, classical-inspired ballads give way to blues-infused vamps and high-octane swing”.

Martin Listabarth's debut solo album “Short Stories” is another collection of compositions that you need to check out as well. After spending time with Martin I could go on and on about his playing and bright future but let's get on with the interview. You can listen to the audio version of the Martin Listbarth episode through any of the popular podcast directories (iHeart Radio, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Amazon Music, Pandora) OR directly on the JazzPianoSkills Podcast Website (jazzpianoskillspodcast.com) where you can also watch the video of the show as well (which I strongly recommend).

Now, It is my great pleasure and honor to welcome to JazzPianoSkills, Mr. Martin Listabarth.

    Discogs Artist Page

"John's soul and being come straight through to his music, the jazz world needs him! "
    - Sheila Jordan (NEA Jazz Master)

"John Di Martino is one of my absolute personal favorite pianists of today. His music is an honest outpouring of light! "
    - Benny Green (Jazz Pianist)

"John di Martino's middle name should be 'taste', for he conveys that quality in both solo and supportive roles, in jazz as well as Latin music."
    - Ray Barretto (NEA Jazz Master)

"John DiMartino is a first-call veteran of the New York City jazz scene. This multi-recorded artist has long been a favorite of singers for his gigantic ears and intuitive, uncluttered playing—rare gifts that also enhance any instrumentalist he accompanies or arranges. DiMartino is a fine musician who sounds less interested in technical pyrotechnics than in mining a melody for its original intent—whether he's arranging or playing, he lets the essence of a song speak for itself. Special Guest, Jamey Aebersold, Pt. 2

Welcome to JazzPianoSkills, I'm Dr. Bob Lawrence. It’s time to Discover, Learn, and Play jazz piano! Today, you are in for a real treat! This is part two of my interview with saxophonist, entrepreneur, author, educator, and jazz legend Jamey Aebersold.

Jamey Aebersold was born July 21, 1939, in New Albany, Indiana. He attended college at Indiana University and graduated in 1962 with a Master's Degree in Saxophone. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Music by Indiana University in 1992. He also plays piano, bass, and banjo.

In 1989, the International Association of Jazz Educators inducted Jamey into their Hall of Fame at the San Diego convention. With this award, Jamey Aebersold joins other jazz luminaries such as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Louis Armstrong, and others.

Jamey Aebersold is an internationally-known saxophonist and authority on jazz education and improvisation and has developed a series of Jazz Play-A-Longs (book and cd sets (now numbering almost 130 volumes) as well as various other supplemental aids for the development of improvisational skills. The Aebersold book and recording sets allow a musician the opportunity to practice and improvise with well-known jazz personalities at home as well as in the classroom. The recordings employ some of the best jazz musicians in the world. This concept has been responsible for changing the practice habits of thousands of musicians around the world.

Jamey Aebersold was one of the first to encourage small group classes which concentrate on jazz improvisation, and he is the director of the Summer Jazz Workshops which now have 40+ years on record. Jamey feels that improvisation is something all people can do—and his clinics and lectures concentrate on demonstrating how the creative and spontaneous nature of each person can be brought to light.

These week-long Summer Jazz Workshops are having a profound effect on musical communities around the world. The Workshops have traveled to Australia, New Zealand, Germany, England, Scotland, Denmark, and Canada. Every summer there are at least two week-long Workshops in the U.S. These camps employ many of the finest players/teachers in jazz and are open to any serious jazz student regardless of ability or age.

In 2007, Jamey Aebersold was awarded the Indiana Governor's Arts Award by Mitch Daniels, the Governor of Indiana.

On October 4, 1987, CBS' "Sunday Morning" with Charles Kuralt and Billie Taylor featured Jamey with the Summer Jazz Workshops in an exciting jazz educational segment.

Jamey Aebersold has taught at three colleges and universities in the Louisville, Kentucky area and has made guest appearances in dozens of cities around the world. While conducting a jazz clinic in Brazil he produced a 110-minute DVD/video appropriately titled "Anyone Can Improvise" which has become a best-seller.

Jamey's hobby is listening to jazz, especially new young players. He also enjoys playing basketball (he has hit 50 free throws in a row!) and is very much interested in Metaphysics and spiritual pursuits as they apply to the growth of the individual. In December 2004, the Jazz Midwest Clinic bestowed upon Jamey the "Medal of Honor" in Jazz Education.

In 2014, Jamey Aebersold was awarded The National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master Award, the nation's highest honor in jazz. Jamey Aebersold is the recipient of the 2014 A.B. Spellman NEA Jazz Masters Award for Jazz Advocacy, which is bestowed upon an individual who has contributed significantly to the appreciation, knowledge, and advancement of the art form of jazz.

Today we are celebrating the 100th episode of JazzPianoSkills! Wow, 100 Podcast Episodes! 100 hours of jazz piano education! In fact, the two-year anniversary of JazzPianoSkills is quickly approaching which warrants additional celebrating. A jazz piano website that hosts a weekly podcast production with a global listening audience and educational podcast packets. Very thorough sequential and interactive courses, weekly online masterclasses, a private community and forums, and of course educational support. So today, I thought I would all hit the pause button and take the time to reflect upon the various jazz piano podcast episodes that have been published and how best to go about listening to them and studying their educational content. AND, I thought it would be nice to have some fun and do a little playing as well. So today, you are going to:

    Discover
    How my Jazz Piano Convictions govern my entire Educational Approach;
from my podcast episode topics to my sequential jazz piano courses

    Learn
How to successfully organize and approach studying the various podcast episodes

    Play
Or I should say, I am going to play a few songs from my recently launched
    Saturday Standards Program
